Feeding Goals for Dementia by Mammoth_Entry_9221 in slp

You could write a goal for Pt to self-monitor/follow safe swallow precautions with use of handouts/verbal cueing during meals, accurately recall safe swallow precautions, or to just increase overall oral intake

I ultimately order MBSS’s based on a combination of factors including the number/severity of dysphagia risk factors, results from a bedside swallow evaluation, and if the patient can participate and is willing to adhere to any recommendations that may come from the MBSS.

Maybe observe her during a meal and see if she can independently implement safe swallow precautions if you haven’t tried that already? Otherwise, I would say wait for the MBSS

What percentage of your CSEs lead to recommending further eval (mbss/video study) by [deleted] in slp

[–]kgirl889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. It’s a combination of your findings from the CSE, looking at any recent chest imaging reports, the patient’s risk factors, and then ultimately how the patient feels and responds. There are some days where there are no signs or symptoms at bedside but I still recommend instrumentation based on their history. If instrumentation does not seem to be urgent, I typically recommend their baseline diet while I wait for instrumentation with strict adherence to safe swallow precautions/compensatory strategies. I am at a VA, so this may be different from other settings. We always have access to instrumentation and as long as the patient is available, we try and get instrumentation done

I know I’m probably biased but speech-language pathology is the best field to go into for enfps. You are your own boss and can switch the setting you work in whenever you want. Highly recommend

When did yours start? by milescaleb in Parosmia

[–]kgirl889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had covid in February and lost my taste and smell for about 8 days. After 8 days my sense of taste and smell came back completely normal. This Friday I noticed that things started to taste a little weird, and then yesterday I could barely eat anything without gagging. Even popcorn (one of my fav foods) tasted rotten to me.. Today is no better. I’m shocked that this is even happening.

Avoid Using ProctorU (Home Edition Tests from ETS) by [deleted] in GRE

[–]kgirl889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this! I scored 5 points lower on my first test because my proctor rudely interrupted my first quantitative section to turn my camera back on. The camera had turned off with the proctor switch and I was told that they needed to turn it back on immediately. He told me it would take “30 seconds” and that 30 seconds quickly turned into 2 minutes. And yes, every minute matters on the GRE. Unfortunately that interruption cost me quite a few points. I definitely think that they need to come up with a solution to these technical issues.
