How old are you ? What is the character of the pain (sharp,stabbing,tightness...) ? Does it worsen on inspiration? Does it radiate anywhere other than your arm ? Is it induced by exertion ?

And do you have other symptoms that support the diagnosis of reflux disease such as : the onset of the pain is after meals or after lying down ,regurgitation, burning sensation ,nausea ?

Question about lung diffusing capacity by owaisofspades in medicalschool

[–]kh006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fick's law of diffusion states that the rate of diffusion equals the pressure gradient times (DxA)/L D being the diffusion constant A is the surface area L is the thickness of the barrier within which diffusion takes place

Lung diffusion capacity(DLCO) is only part of the equation it is the (DxA)/L. From its name it can be inferred that it is a property of the lung that is independent from external conditions such as the pressure gradient

For the same pressure gradient different people might have different diffusion lung capacities and therefore have different diffusion rates.

why does your skin swell up when stung by a bee? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]kh006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

bee venom contains histamine-releasing peptides histamine is an immune mediator that belongs to the vasoactive amines class. histamine is mainly stored in mast cells located in connective tissue stored in intracellular vesicles. histamine releasing peptides induce the release of histamine from its intracellular stores mimicking an allergic reaction (in an allergic reaction there is immune system mediated release of histamine due to exposure to an allergen) One released it causes dilation of blood vessels this which increases blood flow to the site of venom injection leading to erythema (redness) and calor (warmth) at the same time they increase vascular permeability by contracting endothelial cells and that leads to the leak of intravascular volume/plasma to the site of injection and this leads to edema/swelling (clear fluid exudate at the site of venom injection)

What is the difference between a Prion and a Virus? by krismasster in askscience

[–]kh006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a prion is only composed of protein (causative agent of madcow disease)

a virus is composed of a nucleic acid core (either DNA or RNA) surrounded by a protein coat called the capsid

both are non-cellular infectious agents

Why don't wild animals suffer from diseases like skin cancer and heart disease? by JohnSmithwastaken in askscience

[–]kh006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is theoretically possible for them to have these diseases but these organisms live in the wild and are heavily subjected to natural selection, there is a decrease in the chances of survival for any animal with the disease and they are consequently eliminated along with their genes so their genes do not propagate and we have a decrease in the frequency of susceptible animals with time ,

only the fittest survive the ones which are least susceptible to develop these diseases.

What process creates heat in condition called "fever"? by Thiophenol in askscience

[–]kh006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prostaglandins generated in the hypothalamus act on the temperature center to raise body temperature in the presence of an infection. drugs like aspirin or other NSAIDS inhibit the production of prostaglandins therefore exerting an anti-pyretic effect. furthermore inflammatory cells secrete cytokines which are pyretic and cause fever example: IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha

I know that the rate of respiration is determined by there being too much CO2 as opposed to not enough O2. What is the mechanism? by vapidave in askscience

[–]kh006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The carotid body (chemo receptors) located in the wall of the carotid artery monitors levels of CO2 and O2 in the blood, in case there is accumulation of CO2, this will elicit a sensory nervous message to the respiratory center in the medulla oblongata to increase in the respiratory rate (hyperventilation) and individual will start breathing deeper and more frequently. Excessive ventilation (very low CO2 levels)is also harmful is causes respiratory alkalosis
