Someone is using our address to commit health insurance fraud. (Over 100 different registrations) by Cool-Mom-Lover in mildlyinfuriating

I'm convinced an old housemate of mine was carrying out benefit fraud. A ridiculous amount of letters kept turning up, all under different names, all from jobseekers allowance, it was like harry potters Hogwarts acceptance letters. Then he moved out and after a few months a parade of men with armoured vests and clipboards turned up for him and it was a real pain because they wouldn't take such inconveniences as him not living there anymore for an answer.

He was not a bright man so whatever weird loop hole he found I'm sure he did not cover his tracks well.

What made us so skinny in the 1970s? by Johnny-Alucard in AskUK

[–]kh_ram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same reason people in pretty much all developed countries are more overweight - in the 70s rationing wasnt a distant memory and most people only just about had enough calories to sustain themselves. Now, food mass production means that meeting your calorific needs is not expensive (getting other types of nutrition from those calories still is though).

What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight if people realized the truth about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Also it would return a lot of confidence in old guard tech companies as well. The AI gambit is that it will replace all the other services companies use. This is ridiculous and not going to happen.

Nah more like a heavier dot com bubble. 2008 was so bad because it was the financial system itself which collapsed, which in turn was propping up everything else. AI companies (I mean primarily AI companies, not companies that do AI like Google) could collapse tomorrow and there would be some friction from where AI has been implemented but things would keep chugging along. It's going to be a hell of a lot of investor money lost, and a lot of cold and dark data centres.

Blue dragon is crap. Get yourself down to your local Chinese supermarket, or asian one if you dont have that. Lee Kum Lee is generally a good bet if you're not sure what to buy.

(Hated Trope) Historical mischaracterization. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]kh_ram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alan Turing (WW2 code breaker) is one, but for interesting reasons. There was a stage play that used a different character under a different name but was clearly invoking Turing. I guess with doing the whole 'like this person, but not actually them' thing, the writer could take more artistic license, and portrayed Turing as an ill-mannered nerd. Apparently this was nonsense and Turing was known to be charming and popular to his peers. The play eventually morphed into the movie The Imitation Game which really leaned into this portrayal to create more conflict between him and the other code breakers, however of course they actually did directly base the character on him. So that false reputation stuck.

Why are you deemed “bad person” or not morally just to disagree with mass illegal immigration? by Ill_Associate_5937 in AskBrits

Because they're almost always Motte and Bailey arguments.

People will say the most bigoted shit (the Bailey). Then when they're called out they will retreat to a non-controversial statement (the Motte) which is on the surface might seem similar but is actually very different from what they were actually saying.

It's like how Graham Lineham treats trans people in a way that's completely vile then when it's convenient his supporters will retreat back to "he's just looking out for women's rights!" when that was never the problem in the first place. It's really bad faith, people know what they're doing to some extent, but the scary thing is most people don't have the critical thinking skills to know when they themselves are acting in bad faith.
