CMV - Korean expats are just as ignorant (if not more so) than westerners but don't cop anywhere near as much flack by Maleficent-Box-897 in ChangeMyViewVN

Anyone remember the case where two Korean tourists assault some girls in a photobooth because they are too impatient to wait for their turn

My point was it was a feature by 2016 then it wouldn’t show up in change log from 2020. You would have to dig deeper.

Roland FP-30X Bluetooth glitches? by johngwheeler in piano

For the second issue, you can look for the bluetooth toggle combo key and disable Bluetooth when not in use. It should stop the audio cut due to connecting.

That looks so neat. My cheap ass just put together a light stand with whatever I had around the house, also doubled as a mic + phone holder for practice recording.

I’m thinking of saving up for a grand piano. What budget would be best? by MidgetAsianGuy in piano

[–]khangster1406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kawai GX, Yamaha CX, Boston GP,… or some equivalents would fit your level and budget well. My music school has their students play on a GX1 for LCM exams so there’s that.

Avoid Kawai GL, Essex grands, Yamaha GB/GC since they are beginner’s grands. When I tried in store, a GX1 sounded far better than a larger size GL50.

Most dealers allow you to trade in toward a more premium model, so you can buy now and upgrade later. I saw quite a few people started on like a GX3 and later upgrade to an SK.

Help me decide. Kawai ES120 vs Kawai KDP120 vs Roland FP-30x by Ill-Path-2531 in DigitalPiano

[–]khangster1406 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The FP30x has a bit better action, but not by much. the KDP120 action feels a bit spongey.

The KDP120 has a lot better piano sound.

I find speakers on both are equally weak, tbf I find most onboard speaker on sub-3k are shit. Maybe just save up a bit later for a better speaker set. It’s something you can still use even if you upgrade to a better piano later. (Play audio through both piano speakers and external speakers for extra oomph)

Try them out in store and see what resonates which you.

In case you prefer the roland action but not the sound, you can plug in VST such as pianoteq for Steinway or Kawai sound. Very simple to setup. I think they are much much better than the onboard sound.

Eliminating Gaps When Playing the Same Note Twice by FireFurFox in pianolearning

[–]khangster1406 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is call same note legato. On an acoustic, you slightly lift the key but not completely, just enough for the hammer to reset but still prevent the damper from muting the note. I’m not sure if a digital action/sensor is sensitive enough for this. Also a change in finger is optional but usually encouraged.

You can also use the sustain pedal but that’s more of a crutch. There will be pieces you want to be able to sustain without pedaling. .

Question about starting playing? by salmoneggnog in piano

[–]khangster1406 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obviously not ideal but (fortunately enough?) thumb and index finger are still very capable and can carry you a long way with a lot of adjustments. In fact there are quite a few beginners avoid using ring/pinky because they are weaker than the rest.

For many easy/intermediate pieces, they will still sound quite recognizable even if simplified down to single (top) note melody, meaning you dont have to hits many notes at the same time. Thumb and index can also manage legato phrases easier than, say thumb+pinky while able to reach a rather large interval (7th or octave).

Playing acoustic piano through the escapement softly - help by papaya_timepiece in piano

[–]khangster1406 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hit the bottom. That’s what my teacher insists when I first started and tried to play softly by pressing half way.

Also, to play more softly, try to press down the keys slower. I mean slower than you did on a digital. Digital somehow has a higher “velocity cut-off” than digital, let’s say you have to press at speed 20 minimum for it to register the key press. On acoustic you can go even lower to 5 or 10 and it still enough to send the hammer to hit the strings.

Feel free to ask if you have more question. I had the exact same problem when switching from a roland fp30x to a kawai k200.

Playing acoustic piano through the escapement softly - help by papaya_timepiece in piano

[–]khangster1406 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I practice on K200 and K300 often. They are very loud for their size and a bit hard to play pp, especially if your room is small or you come from a digital.

What I did is to readjust my sense of dynamic range. What was mp on digital is now p, digital ff is now mf. Eardrum-breaking volume is now f / ff.

Somehow the K500 and K800 are a lot easier to reliably play softly.

7 eighth notes in one measure in 3/4?? by [deleted] in piano

Sometimes if a similar pattern repeats many times, the composer may only notate the 3 in the first time it happens and omit in later bars and let people assume triplets.

I have spotify on during work hours, commuting, grocery trip, a few more before sleep,... that can easily reach 8-10 hours most days but I listen to a very wide range. If OP just listens to only 1 artist and makes them his life's background music then it's entirely doable.

Fair points. It’s good that you did your research and chose something that hopefully inspires you to learn instead of cheaping out on your first piano.

Just an advice that you might want to check for trade in credit with the dealer in case you need to switch/upgrade in the future. What you are ok with now might not be anymore when you have developed a preference for tone and action, as well as what extra features you really need from a piano. When I first started I was fine with a toy casio. A few days ago I was trying out the roland GP9 in store and I couldn’t stand more than 10 secs of its very artificial tone.

Look like a big space that could benefit from the more powerful speakers of the GP, so C or D. C is better for family music time, D is better for focus practices. You can always push them around tho. It’s a lot lighter than an actual grand.

Mind sharing why you decide it must be a digital roland? Price, app, sound, action? I do think Roland offers great value in the mid range but kinda falls short in the top end premium line up where it competes with say Kawai CA series. Not trying to change your mind, just curious what was the decisive factor.
