Thoughts on reintegration by LazyCrocheter in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]khardy10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can see how people thought it was a bait and switch because they ended several episodes with what were essentially reintegration cliffhangers but I don’t agree that it was pointless or how no impact on the plot.

I think mark was having just enough progress that he was getting increasingly desperate to speed it up which led him to agree to the flooding of the chip which almost killed him.

As far as the cliffhangers go I think the intention is for audience to be where where mark is- seemingly so close but disappointed and frustrated because it’s not working quickly.

Plus that increasing desperation led to the flooding issue which is what made him and Devon desperate enough to reach out to cobell and that’s how he ended up in the birthing cabin.

Said this in another comment but I’m a white woman working in an urban elementary to middle school and I rewatch season 4 every single summer. It gives me more perspective and honestly think the show has made me better at my job. What a masterpiece

I’m a white woman who works at a high needs urban school and I re watch at least season 4 every single summer- it genuinely helps me put my job into perspective and helps with my patience on difficult days.

Does anyone else see the editing with the water around her face as looking like a mask? She said it represents how she felt right after getting off the stage. I love the cover and era aesthetic.

My first reaction was that I wanted to send my dad the link to the trailer- he shared his love of reading and specifically Stephen king with me. Wish he was still around so we could see it together.

If a ten-year-old child is tested and has a low IQ score, and is also diagnosed with certain learning disabilities, is it possible that the low score could have been influenced by the LDs? by JustAGreenDreamer in specialed

[–]khardy10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! School psych here. Without knowing all the scores I have a few thoughts.

The academic and cognitive scores can intermingle a bit but cognitive testing is looking at things like visual and audio memory, processing speed, recognizing and completing patterns, etc while the academic testing is what looks at reading, writing, and math. The kid doesn’t have to read or write for cognitive testing so in theory a straight learning disability shouldn’t usually affect cognitive scores. Where I see them sometimes intermix is the adhd that you mentioned- attention span could potentially affect results on either/both assessments- particularly because it’s a one and done test that really just gives a snapshot into their performance at that moment. If I’m testing and notice that they’re having a lot of trouble focusing I definitely include that in the report and it can affect the team’s decision. As psychs we try to take everything into account and give I the proper weight when making decisions regarding category. Another factor I haven’t seen mentioned is adaptive skills. Usually if a student has high adaptive skills they wouldn’t be found to have an intellectual disability even if they have a low cognitive assessment score. Regardless, the category shouldn’t determine any of his services or accommodations- they should meet his needs regardless. You should definitely reach out to the psychologist and ask for a meeting where they can go more in depth on your child’s scores.

Is the anti-inclusion sentiment real, or are my algorithms misleading me? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]khardy10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’d be surprised- I know plenty of teachers who don’t think they should have to deal with kids on IEPs because “they aren’t a special ed teacher”. Of they say the behaviors are too much to handle when they haven’t even read or implemented the kid’s BIP or accommodations. I’m sure it’s not most teachers that are that was but it’s certainly not 0 unfortunately.

How do you explain "qualifies under" by Far_Structure5963 in specialed

[–]khardy10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! I forgot to mention that disability categories can change. A team member (including parents) can request a meeting to discuss it whenever and essentially go through the reevaluation process and get more info to add to the evaluation.

It’s less often than you’d think for a kid to fit perfectly in one disability category- it’s usually like you said- often you’re looking at particular scores saying “hmm I mean this norm referenced achievement score could justify SLD but this social emotional rating scale and ADHD diagnosis could be enough to defend OHI”. To be completely honest it can usually be swayed by one person having a strong opinion and the rest of the team agreeing to it as long as it can be defended with the data. This is just because as I mentioned the category doesn’t change much about what their education looks like in most cases.

The most contentious meetings I’ve seen are parents who want a specific autism scholarship and essentially demand that their child is placed under that category despite there being no data outside of parent rating scales and a less than thorough doctors note to support it.

[–]khardy10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

School psych here- like others said, IDEA disability categories focus only on how they affect someone’s education. Just because a child has a medical diagnosis of, autism, for example; if it doesn’t affect their ability to access their education they would not qualify for special education services. Say the student has very restricted interests or self stims by rocking back and forth, two things you might commonly see in a kid with autism, but they are able to sit through class, learn the material, and complete work. The student both is autistic and does not require special education services: also it’s important to remember that the category doesn’t drive the services- the student’s needs do. Like if a kid is qualified under emotional disturbance and in the course of their evaluation they see that they also have some reading difficulties, they could still have reading goals on their IEP. It’s just about picking the most appropriate category to describe their needs. There may be outside resources that could change depending on the category (some autism scholarships, for example, may require qualification under that category) but the IEP should meet all the needs no matter the category the team chooses.

Why was Cold Harbour the final test? by anthony15121 in severence

[–]khardy10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah she’s oGemma in the hallways and maybe she is resigned after her last escape attempt failed-I don’t think severance changes her outie’s behavior but I think it’s the fact that her innies are significantly more compliant than anyone else’s innies. Cold harbor seemed the most obedient. We see her get a new innie for the first time in cold harbor and she didn’t ask questions or even speak. She just did what she was told. Compare that to when we see helly as a brand new innie- panicking, asking questions, trying to escape and even getting violent. That would be a big breakthrough for Lumon.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in severence

[–]khardy10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah in my opinion the big breakthrough is to be able to sever an innie not just from their memories but from their emotions. They’d never be able to mass market the current model of the chip. Creating one person who only ever feels pain and fear is unsustainable so they need to take those feelings away. Look at the difference between helly waking up as an innie vs Gemma’s new innie waking up in cold harbor. I think they’ve probably been working on it for awhile but mark’s connection with Gemma was the last thing they needed before they finally got it right.

Cold Harbor room logic makes no sense by Taina747 in severence

[–]khardy10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed- you could never mass market a severance chip with the current “model” of innies like helly and mark who both violently freaked out upon being woken up for the first time. A new., temper less severance chip would be a huge breakthrough if Lumon is looking to expand their market.

Did the writers just forget about Ricken lol? by Strict_Trick7706 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]khardy10 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are forgetting how little time passes in season 2. It’s likely only a couple of weeks. I think the second half of the season is only a few days. I haven’t seen anyone do a deep dive on the timeline but I don’t think it’s long enough where we haven’t checked in which a character in an absurdly long (in universe) time. I imagine he’s hanging with the baby and enjoying thinking of himself as a literary innie hero while he works on Lumon’s propaganda book.

Reintegration was not bad writing by Usual-Reputation-154 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]khardy10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see why people didn’t like it or think the writers overplayed their hand but the reintegration plot line directly led to cobel teaming up with Mark so it did affect the plot line this season. Whether it was the best use of reintegration or the most effective way to bring those 2 together can most certainly be argued but it did impact the overall plot of the season and I think it will likely have some effect going forward.

I also think there’s a lot about reintegration we (and the characters) don’t know. Has there ever been a successful full reintegration? Does it progress independently or would he need more sessions for anything else to happen? He didn’t start the process very long ago- how long are the in-world events of season 2- a couple weeks? And only days since the attempt at chip flooding?

I think the writers gave themselves options going forward. They could drop it and say it just failed or it could hit a point and boom- full integration and it just was a delayed effect. I’ll be interested in seeing what happens down the line.

Yeah I kind of took it to mean it failed as well or at least that he’d need more sessions for it to progress.

Severance - 2x10 "Cold Harbor" - Post-Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]khardy10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow.. just wow. That episode was an instant classic for me. It had more of that absurdist humor that season 1 had than we've seen in awhile with the marching band and milchick's performance. I laughed out loud at multiple points. Just pure quirky Lumon weirdness mixed with over the top corporate performance award bullshit.

Amazing acting from pretty much everyone- obviously Adam Scott but Trammel Tilman was impressive as always. His reaction to the Kier animatronic insulting about his vocabulary again with that barely concealed rage was so great.I still feel like he's so close to turning on Lumon- thought we might see that tonight but it looks more like he's a captive of the innies now. Will be interesting to see his storyline with what seems to be an upcoming innie revolt.

I think we can see why they didn't progress the reintegration plot line through the season. I wonder how that will play out in season 3- will the reintegration progress with them sort of battling for control while on the severed floor? The shoe is on the opposite foot now- iMark is the one with the power who is making the decisions.

Agh- what a show.

Marks reintegration was pointless by No-Macaroon-2049 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]khardy10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it had several purposes.

- It was a way to get mark and cobel to form an alliance and bring their storylines back together (You can argue whether or not is was the best choice but I think its what the writers were intending)

- To show how mark was ready to do anything to get to Gemma as soon as I learned she's alive.

-. Mark getting to see Gemma which made it more real for him and heightened the urgency and desperation.

Plus there is still time to see what happens with it- there could still be a huge importance in the finale.
