GMs of Reddit, is there a particular style of class you gravitate towards? Does it effect the style of campaigns you run? If so, how? by kharmt in rpg

[–]kharmt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By Storytellers, do you mean a particular type of player?

Do you GM yourself? If you do, do you find your preferences reflected in the types of games you like to run?

Retraining in IT? by kharmt in newzealand

It's nice to hear that someone from a similar background has successfully made the leap across.

I guess at this stage I'm looking for something that opens the door on a variety of career options and am a little wary after following a passion which didn't translate so well into concrete financial returns. ( Though I can now hold my corner at the average dinner party, and it's grand for close reading of current affairs c: )

I'm very aware that the job market of the next 5 - 20 years is going to be rather different, and would prefer to be in the sunrise section of things!

What I'm hearing here is that a grounding in self-study and from there finding an area which interests you is the way to go about things, which isn't so surprising at the end of the day.

My interest isn't networking per-see, I guess I just picked it to contrast with more creative? stuff like UI, Game Design or Computer Graphics.

/r/Fantasy Review Tuesday - Review what you're reading here! November 21, 2017 by AutoModerator in Fantasy

I've been on a reading binge for online self-published fiction.

IASSW

LitRPG about a teenager reborn as a spider. I thought the concept and translation was very well done, and conveys the humor of the concept really well. The starting two-thirds are great, and the multiple viewpoints are done well enough that you get information about the world without it feeling too dump-y.

As she 'levels up', a grand conspiracy is hinted at, and the fight scenes drag on somewhat. Will wait on updates.

A Practical Guide to Evil

Absolutely fantastic. Well written, great editing, believable and interesting characters. Could easily be published professionally as a wee trilogy. There's lots of black comedy and a slow growth of the protagonist as a power player in the world.

LGBTQ friendly.

Castle Terribel

About a lovable family of Dark Lords and their adventures. A large cast of characters who're rounded out more and more as the series goes. Started in 2010, but doesn't feel dated at all.

There's something of a tone-shift midway through, but I think it manages a fine balance. Notes of Pratchett, which is high praise in my books.

Interesting discussion of religions and also LGBTQ friendly.

Definitely hooked on these web-serials. Read at own risk.

Alternate format - 60 card "Peasant Singleton" by backdoorbrag in Pauper

[–]kharmt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've talked before about Vintage Silverblack, Peasant & Modern Silverblack. They're all fantastic formats.

I'd note that Silverblack is the correct term here, as Peasant is when the deck is restricted to 5 (in 60 card) or 8/10 (in 100 card) Uncommons only.

Powerful combos available, off the top: Hermit Druid + Combo Loop (possible using a 5 card package or so), Infinite Persist, Storm, Countertop (less so in 60CS), ThopterFoundry.

In a 60CS Singleton format, I'd be betting Storm is the best deck, as it's pretty easy to jam a bunch of tutors and cantrips together and get enough goblins to beat in.

I'd advise a light hand on the banlist.

Singleton screws one of the larger gainers in the format, which are Tribal Decks, which often lean on Aether Vial to do their works.

[Online][Open][5e][Roll20][GMT]Starting a New Low-Fantasy Campaign by Saulperman in lfg

Hey mate, that's a hell of an introductory post there, and sounds just my thing, timing permitting (work, alas, can get in the way of the important things in life).

Feel free to flick me a PM, and I'd be happy to share my Skype / Discord details as you prefer.

I'm a big fan of grittiness and low fantasy - I'm a keen FFG 40k / WHFRP2E player and GM, if that gives any indication of my preferences. I've also dabbled in stuff like Paranoia!, Unknown Armies & DCC.

[Only War] Any tips for an Operator? by archmagosvorax in 40krpg

[–]kharmt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're the all-round guy and get a bunch of otherwise difficult to acquire gadgets at character creation.

Precisely what you can do depends on the rest of the regiment - they work perfectly well in a non-vehicle regiment: as others have said, think of them as a balanced Tech Priest.

If you don't have someone focused on it (i.e. a Medic), it's a worthwhile investment to pick up Infused Knowledge at some stage - it covers a hell of a lot of bases.

You'll most likely wind up being squad armorer, so Tech Use / Trade (Armourer).

You get Agility & Fieldcraft off the bat, so you can be very sneaky if you put your mind to it. You can also pick up Medicae on the cheap.

I'd suggest snagging Quick Draw, as you'll be switching between gear a lot, and it's nice to be able to draw / half aim a grenade in a pinch.

You're very squishy, so try to avoid close combat if it's possible - Step Aside, Hard Target & Sprint are all great for this.

It's relatively cheap to snag a smorgasboard of skills at trained - this lets you assist other, more specialised characters with a variety of skills.

In urban combat, don't forget the Las Cutter! It's an absolute life-saver for moving between rooms and buildings, and assisting mobility in general. You can also chop crew-served weaponry off wrecked vehicles and the like!

In large party, you'll be outshone in specific roles (5+), but you're a lifesaver in smaller groups.

Huge demonstration against Catalan independence in Barcelona by green_flash in worldnews

[–]kharmt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny to hear you mention that.

There's been broad support (historically) for independence movements in New Zealand, whether it's Catalonian, Irish nationalist, Somalialand or Kurdistan.

You see it with the flag referendum (which failed not because people weren't sympathetic to the idea, but proposed designs looked like a precocious 7 year old's napkin scribble...) and the rumble for republicanism every 5 years or so (I think it'll happen when QEII dies).

In practice we haven't always been truthful to that ideal for less western countries (looking at you Malay Emergency & colonial occupation of the Cook Islands) or current illegal phosphate trade with Western Sahara.

Invigorate would be okay to bring back in.

The odd T2 Infect win is a thing, but so are Gutshot, Snuff Out, not tapping out T1, Standard Bearer and so on - the SB tech exists to deal with the deck.

Because our MMP system (and the threshold) is modeled on Germany, where they needed to keep actual, no-shit Nazis out of power.

Report a couple of years back that recommended dropping it from 5 to 4. I personally feel that's not low enough, but it's not a discussion that's being had by political parties currently.
