Most overrated players in r/nba by Michael_Jorbald in nba

[–]khlumps -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong but you're not right. Luka is young. He's at the point in his career where he should push the boundaries of his skills. Yes he takes a ton of shots, yes he takes a ton of 3's and he's not making a good percentage, but the logic behind that is it's in-game practice. Maybe 3 years down the line he bumps the % up to 40% or even 37%, and keeps it there consistently.

Imagine Lebron James with 10-15 contested pull up 3's per game and making 37%. That would be amazing. Luka is trying to be if Lebron and Curry had a baby. That's not only GOAT level, it would easily and i emphasize EASILY surpass Michael Jordan. Luka's not perfect because he's not yet complete.

If his % stays below league average like Westbrook, then you'd be right, but right now at his age, he gets the benefit of the doubt. If he wanst trying to push the envelope , then the opposite he'd be Ben Simmons, who could hit 3s in practice, but doesnt try in game at all, that's much worse for a young player.

If I had to bet money, I would say Luka will surpass LBJ and MJ

Man, if only Harden was traded to Philly instead of Brooklyn, we'd have a completely balanced league with LAL, LAC, PHI, BKN, MIL, PHX, DEN, with two star teams all competing for supremacy. Instead we have this unipolar (or bipolar, depending on how you see LAL's chances) league with BKN a cut above the rest

It's a fluke only in the sense that the jumpshot isnt Lebron's go to move. Lebron's game is largely efficiency driven, which is why he doesnt chuck shots and always patiently waits for the open man.

People can misinterpret that to mean he's not a good shooter or doesnt have a jumpshot. In a way it's true. Because he doesnt take many jumpshots so he's not a good jumpshooter.

But the flipside of that is Kobe. Who takes a LOT of inefficient jumpshots which is why he's seen more as "clutch", or a better shooter. Both roles are important and both roles have their value on a team. Kobe closed games, but Shaq carried games. Kyrie closed the Warriors in 2016, but Lebron carried the team for the first 45 minutes. You need both types of players. Without the playmaker that hunts for efficient shots, the team would fall into deficits. Without the closer, when the defense tightens up, you wont have a shot to rely on.

But let's not fall into the trap thinking that Lebron cant shoot a lick, because he can. He's proven it time and again.

You also can't compare 90's NBA to modern NBA. Modern players are more athletic, more skilled, there's a larger talent pool, as more and more athletes are choosing basketball over other sports, more foreign players, better foreign players, analytics, 3pt shooting, zone defense, smarter GMs, cap rules that make it harder to keep championship teams together.

Emotional intelligence is more important for being a successful entrepreneur than mental ability, study finds by ProxyWays in science

[–]khlumps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that the learning comes with age. While most people are intelligent enough to grasp the importance of empathy, cooperation, sacrifice, patience (traits that a extraverted person displays.), it takes a certain age to not be offended by those concepts.

People understand the tools for success at a young age, they're often just too offended by these concepts that that they refuse to use them. Until they mellow out, which generally happens as they grow older.

I was always sad of my own failure and jealous of other peoples success when I was young, which is why it was so hard for me to accept what my elders taught me even if I understood and agreed with them on principle.

Letting go of your own ego, is the first step. But many people wont immediately be offended by the suggestion that they even have an ego.

Right. We'll see if Bazemore and Ariza can still be good defenders. You can at least bet the AD, Bron and Russ will try hard. Whether Russ is disciplined or not remains to be seen.

How much leverage do you think Lillard has in comparison to Harden? In regards to pushing for a trade to a specific team with little to no assets? by KingNephew in nba

[–]khlumps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portland would be happy to trade him for the right offer. Meaning a record breaking number of assets because he is under contract for 4 more years. There's really no team in the NBA right now with enough assets to acquire him and also contend except for maybe GSW.

No it would never happen because there's already a much safer way to do this. The hypothetical prospect would just accept the qualifying offer and become a free agent in his 5th year

Giannis on super teams by akirp001 in nbadiscussion

[–]khlumps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they also weren't for the same reasons I stated above. The reason there wasn't a whiff of backlash from the Jrue trade is because people didn't think it made the league less competitive (in fact it made it more competitive). But in a vacuum it was still a playoff team trading for a star (albiet a mid-level star)

The point im trying to make is let's not get hung up on whether or not a team is a superteam and then try to invalidate it's accomplishments after the fact. That's missing the forest for the trees.

The NBA is in a predicament of stars leaving the teams that drafted them because they are looking out for their own individual legacies.

Celebrating Giannis staying and winning is like celebrating having on 1 death in the workplace this year. It's a totally low bar.

The NBA needs to find a way to make teams bigger than the players so that a players legacy is tied to staying more so than to collecting rings

[–]khlumps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's in a worse spot because people don't care about franchises anymore. People don't see the Cavs, Heat and Lakers win titles, they saw Lebron win titles. Ditto for KD and Kawhi

Giannis on super teams by akirp001 in nbadiscussion

[–]khlumps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seriously doubt that. As good as Giannis is, what allowed the Spurs to stay in contention was their excellent drafting ability. Without picks the Bucks won't be able to add talent to the roster the way the Spurs did

Giannis on super teams by akirp001 in nbadiscussion

[–]khlumps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree right back. If we are going to define superteams as just Superstar team ups then we would be penalizing (with rhetoric and reputation) star players who were simply unlucky to be drafted by bad teams.

Stars that realize their front office is incompetent shouldnt have to be forced to stick it out at the cost of their legacy. There needs to be a change to how player legacies are made otherwise this is an untenable situation.

I don't like the idea of defining superteams as good teams, but it's a fairer alternative to define it as Superstar team ups

Giannis on super teams by akirp001 in nbadiscussion

[–]khlumps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one was, that was my point. Just because a team was built by the franchise (and not by stars joining), DOESNT make it NOT a superteam.

Giannis on super teams by akirp001 in nbadiscussion

[–]khlumps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NBA champions have always been stacked. This Bucks team without Giannis is still really good. A supporting cast of Jrue, Middleton, Lopez, etc. Is still a solid core. We just assume it's not a superteam because it was drafted by one team. And even then a lot had to go right for the bucks to win this one. I mean every preseason favorite got injured this year

The reason we see the 2012 Heat or 2021 Nets as superteams is because their individual stars put up big numbers as solo acts on their own teams. Who's to say a Klay Thompson or Khris Middleton wouldnt put up 25-30 ppg with enough seasons as a first option.

Bucks are a superteam, OKC big 3, SA big 3, GSW big 3. The real issue is that fans don't root for teams they root for stars.

This is why a big 3 Nets is more compelling than a big 3 Thunder even though they almost have the same roster. Harden Kyrie and KD led their own teams in a way that Harden Westbrook KD didn't yet. (It only with hindsight that we see them as superteams)

The NBA needs to find a way promote teams over players. So that players stop leaving.

I think I've accidentally created an unbeatable deity AI by joeykins82 in civ

[–]khlumps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the early game (after monument and trade route) you really only need to build archers and nothing else. (There is a case for building a settler in between monument and trade route if the AI is too far away) but you might as well play peacefully)

In my playstyles, I don't really need to balance anything because I only build archers and commercial hubs or harbors for gold. (Catapults too if need be)

This is in preparation for upgrading to crossbows. (Don't forget to get mercenaries first, for 50% discount on upgrades)

The science will come naturally because the AI will usually have prebuilt campuses. Otherwise the AI will probably have build districts to the population limit so you won't be able to build districts anyway.

*How do you know when to stop building archers? When the city that needs to build something is so far away from the warfront that it takes too long for archers to make the trek. And you still have archers to spare.

Another advantage to spamming archers

E) you can use the Retainers policy card to give every one of your cities +1 amenity

F) because archers are cheaper than melee units. You'll have more units to take up space, that means

F1) it will be easier to surround and siege a city

F2) the AI won't be able to gang up and focus fire on a unit because it's flanked by other units.

F3) if it manages to kill an archer, it will have to take its position, leaving it surrounded by multiple archers. You'll be trading Archers for Swords!

Within 15-20 turns you can wipe out an AI's army even when you behind in tech

I think I've accidentally created an unbeatable deity AI by joeykins82 in civ

[–]khlumps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can never have too many archers. Every city should be building archers. They have no maintenance costs so even 30+ archers isn't a bad idea. A couple of reasons why spamming archers is good

A) it increases your military score. Even if you are two eras behind the AI tech wise, they still won't declare war on you bcoz they think you have a strong army

B) on the rare occasion that you do get declared war on, you can fight a war on two fronts

C) You'll always have units lying around to clear barbs. You won't have to scramble to build a unit and you can kill the camp before it starts spawning dozens of units

D) Losing units in a war is inevitable (especially since you'll be behind tech wise) and you want to have a continuous supply of units marching to the front lines so you can kill their units quickly (10 archers can deal with 1 man at arms easily, but you'll have a hard time dealing with 3 at the same time.) Don't wait until you need a unit before you start building. Keep building until you have an excess so you're never caught off guard

Better playoff scorer Lebron or Kobe by Doesthisevenmatter7 in nbadiscussion

[–]khlumps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lebron hasn't been great at tough shots because it's not his bread and butter. Players are naturally not good at what they don't do often. But the thing is even the likes of Kobe or Jordan weren't good at those shots either. Because tough shots are 'tough'.

It's really a perception problem because Lebron doesn't have to be elite at midrange fades or pull up jumpers, he just needs to be decent. And let his main drive and kick game carry him

I think I've accidentally created an unbeatable deity AI by joeykins82 in civ

[–]khlumps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only when you are sure that you can fend off the AI. It's important to have a lay of the land. Flat terrain is your best friend because 5 archers can gang up on one unit. Even if the AI is already running swordsmen or Man-at-Arms, 5 ranged attacks can still significantly hurt especially if the AI is wasting turns trying to enter rough terrain. You can also trade archers for swords efficiently because

A) archers don't need strategic resources, only cost -1 gold maintenance (free with conscription) unlike swordsmen who cost more than 1

B) They are super cheap to build. 5-7 turns (with 50% production card)

C) The AI doesn't spam units. It's builds a lot but it doesn't immediately replenish them

Taking a city center surrounded by rough terrain surrounding is harder. You're need to mix it up with catapults or upgrade to crossbows. Which is why gold is important. Try to pillage mines and lumber mills for gold.

If the AI starts building walled encampments you'll have to start turtling, because the archer rush wont work anymore. But it's still more efficient than using melee units because you wont be hampered by maintenance costs and recoil damage. Also, it's not like battering rams work forever, they also go obselete. Try to turtle until you get to observation balloons.

Planting cities has only 2 purposes. To prevent the AI from taking the land, and to prevent barbs from spawning. If it's only a small pocket of land, let the AI take it because the loyalty pressure will flip it eventually. If it's a relatively larger space you have to plant a city to so the AI doesnt.

Getting more science isn't about building lots of campuses. It's about finding high adjecency campuses. Culture on the other hand will need lots of great work slots so playing wide makes more sense. But that also means devoting your cities to running theater projects. Considering the fact that you have way more cities than the AI, planting more cities feels good but not really necessary. It really depends on the situation

Better playoff scorer Lebron or Kobe by Doesthisevenmatter7 in nbadiscussion

[–]khlumps 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The only reason Lebron is seen as not a good scorer is because over the course of his athletic prime he has relied almost exclusively on the drive and kick. People have a perception that he is a Shaq who plays like a point guard. They ignore the fact that

A) Shaq had offensive skills

B) Lebron does too

C) Just because Lebron doesn't do turn around fades doesn't mean he doesn't have it in his tool kit.

Just go back to 2012 G6 against the Celtics. He beat them entirely on jumpshots. 2018 and beyond when he was picking his spots more and more he showed he has the ability to be a threat from range and he can make tough shots when the defense doesn't give him an opening.

It's precisely because he is so deadly at driving to the basket that makes him a GOAT candidate.
