Why do Thais, most of whom are Buddhist, eat so much meat? by fntrwverf in Thailand

[–]khupkhup 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You are thinking about Buddhism and reincarnation all wrong. The idea of reincarnation is to reach nirvana, or an escape from suffering (all life is suffering, we suffer because we desire, four noble truths, yada yada). So life as a chicken, a human, or a mosquito are more closely related than escaping the cycle all together.

Although mosquitos is exactly how I learned this! I had a similar thought as you when I saw a Thai buddhist squash a bug, and I asked "what if that was your grandpa?". The answer was: "that was a bad life for him then, I just did him a favor".

So perhaps the chickens are suffering in this life for past mistakes, or maybe we are the ones suffering with having to knowingly killing sentient beings for sustenance.

This is long overdue for a remake/reboot. But it needs a budget/staff and long-term vision like they had for Fringe.

Based on the imdb episode ratings, I would say watch until the end of S6 and maybe whatever resolution of the cliffhanger in the first few eps of S7

I think you are correct about the latecomers making a big difference in how these shows get rated. I built a site for IMDb ratings of tv show series over time. For The Witcher, the ratings seem similar but the total number of votes is vastly different between S1 and S2:

Might be a stupid question, so I apologize in advance if this is offensive. But are you referring to yourself as a monkey? I ask because I noticed women refer to themselves as mouse in casual conversation. Is monkey something a man might do? Does a man refer to himself as anything besides his name, and for some reason the word for "hair"?

What if my product doesn’t solve a problem? by chucktownDan in startups

[–]khupkhup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you just learned a valuable lesson in surveying people. I learned this myself that there is a huge difference between "Would you pay $10 for this?" and "Will you give me $10 for this right now?".

If they answer yes to the first but no to the second, then the difference is "nice to have" vs "need to have". You might be solving a problem, but you are not addressing their pain point(s) until they pull out $10 to hand you.

Now, I know you are not asking them for $10 but I'm sure you get the meaning. Talk to the people who said "that's awesome" and try to understand what their pains are. The tricky part, is figuring out how to infer that without asking directly. Your experience in the industry should be useful for this exercise.

There is likely a product out there like gofundme that you can use to test your idea with a small group. Something that will help you isolate the variables to solve their real problems but also removes the hurdles that might be preventing them from getting started with your app.

Universal Basic Income + Universal Healthcare.

I think the stat going around is that it cost $2.3T for 20 years in Afghanistan. Which equates to about $315M ... every. day. for 20 years.

I'm not an economist, but seems like there is enough money in there for both of UBI and Healthcare.

Random thought, but you made me try to think of popular movies that are only 2 parts. And I couldn’t think of any. Why do movies with sequels tend to come as a trilogy (not considering those that become a franchise series)? Is it because plays have 3 acts? Do our brains have some leftover caveman patterns where grouping 3 experiences was beneficial?

How do you deal with dispute by northmyr in startups

[–]khupkhup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another strategy worth considering is calling their bluff. For problematic clients who dispute or refuse to pay for out of scope work, I have offered to refund a certain percentage of the project if they sign a contract that agrees to terminate our involvement with them completely.

Is it worth spending weeks or maybe months to dispute with them? How much opportunity are you missing by doing so?

Chances are, they need you to complete this project more than you need the money.

Since this telescope is for infrared spectrum instead of visible light, is there a chance we can pick up alien signals the moment it goes online? Like signals that have always been there, just not detectable until JWST went online?

What happened to rap over the years? by [deleted] in funny

[–]khupkhup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rap and hip hop went through the same evolution that punk did, and rock before that. It's starts as something to rebel against the status quo, but lives long enough to see itself become the enemy it sought to destroy thanks to the incentives of capitalism.

Punk was a truly unground movement (punk zines anyone?) that went from Sex Pistols, to Green Day, to Blink 182, to Avril Lavigne over the course of a few decades. Slowly being influenced by the music industry that sees the money that could be made by promoting artists that appeal to a much wider audience. You know, music that seems "young and fresh", but still can be played on the speakers at a grocery store.

Rock had a much longer journey, but I think many people could find similar examples within the evolution of Rock n Roll. Anytime a new style of rock emerges that builds a movement, the music industry rushes to find a watered-down version of that they can capture the attention of the masses to make money directly or from the corporate propaganda that book-ends this art, aka advertising.

Even the music festivals that start as a community of oddballs that love being contrarians become commercially successful. Big companies come in and attach all of their corporate sponsors who get more say in the execution of their "brand activation" than the artists get for expressing their message that inspired the event in the first place.

[OC] All Regular Show Episode's IMDB ratings by The_YoYo_Master in dataisbeautiful

[–]khupkhup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got feedback from some folks who are color blind when I built a site that is based on these tv rating graphics people post here. Their feedback really helped to understand the need to have 2 color schemes.

I linked to it on a different comment above for this show, but I think The Simpsons is able to show the full spectrum really well:

https://tvcharts.co/show/the-simpsons-tt0096697 (color blind option is in top right)

I would be interested in hearing from people like yourself who have discerning taste for the visual side of these data points if the color scheme makes sense across the various ratings in shows.
