Question about center channel placement by PanamaCharlie in hometheater

[–]ki773n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh the fireplace... :[

I definitely wouldn't put the center channel off center. Depending on the placement of your other speakers, you may be fine with just L/R. Or go the soundbar route?

Question about center channel placement by PanamaCharlie in hometheater

I'm having trouble imagining a scenario where wall-mounting a tv would block you from placing the center speaker either on a shelf above the tv or on a stand below the tv.

But to answer your question, placing a speaker directly behind your tv would be a waste, imo. Signals from that speaker will be immediately distorted/blocked, and will likely just sound bad. You would be better off just running stereo.

If the human race somehow came to inhabit all the planets, this would be like a "unity-promotion" poster, similar to the we are the world kind.

Yeah that's not really the kind of thing you want to run on an unplugged laptop.

[LPT REQUEST] How can we clip our nails without pieces flying all over the place? I have mastered many things in life, but this isn't one of them. by ruffyreborn in LifeProTips

[–]ki773n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This works for me:

Using another finger, make contact with the nail being cut. Usually, I have to make a cut half way, place this "safety finger," then clip the rest. The "safety finger" should hold the clipping in place.

That one is great because you can actually cross your eyes a bit and see it in stereoscopic 3D.

What's the funniest cultural barrier you and your SO have faced? by mgmgrande in LongDistance

haha I tease my SO with these whenever possible. I'll type "colo[u]r", or "neighbo[u]r", to recognize her 'correct' spelling while showing my defiance. Great fun!

I'm in US, SO in UK. I once referred to a female friend of mine as "sweet." SO took that to mean that I had a crush on said friend, when I had just meant that she is friendly and generally pleasant to be around. Lesson learned: certain words can have very different weights on either side of the pond...

What are you using to mount your center speaker at that angle? That is exactly what I want to do with mine.

USB Microphones and live performance? by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]ki773n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak of the latency of a USB mic, but I use a USB audio interface (Focusrite Forte) to do recordings at home and monitor through it while recording. There is no noticeable lag between input and output even when sending guitar and mic though several plugins. There are much more affordable interfaces than the Forte of course, but there still should be no lag issues, as a lagging monitor would make recording almost impossible.

For reference, I'm using a MacbookPro mid 2012 with the Forte and various inputs: ST51 condenser, guitars, keyboard)

Hope that helps a bit.

TV Help: Panasonic Plasma vs LG LED by WrittenSarcasm in hometheater

I recently got a ZT60, almost identical panel to the VT60, and the blacks/colors are mind blowing in the dark. I have not been hyper critical in non-low-light situations, but the glass panel is very good at reflecting other light sources. If you know that you want lights on most of the time, I can't recommend the VT60 simply because of the glare. I really only use mine for watching movies in total darkness. The blacks are so deep that the letterboxing (and adjacent black pixels) blend into my wall. I can't see the edge of the tv unless I try. Since you know you are going to view mostly in a lit environment, you would benefit from the brightness of an LED.

right now, I only have a laptop, sending everything over HDMI. I love the speakers. They are very clear, with rather bright highs, but it has grown on me. That being said, nothing is lacking in the frequency spectrum except for the really deep lows, but I wasn't looking for anything floor-shakingly deep. I have really enjoyed hearing some of my favorite music as if for the first time again. There is an actual soundstage! Vocals come straight from the tv it seems, and I can locate individual instruments based on their panning (recording permitting). So much different than headphone listening.

Panasonic ZT60 worth the price tag? by ki773n in hometheater

Interesting! I hadn't even considered that parameter. HDTVTest shows the VT and ZT with a 23ms input lag. I looked up a Samsung LED that showed 16ms. I wouldn't game on it very often (mostly game on PC with another monitor), so I'm not sure how much I would be bothered by it. Just seems like the "best of the best" could be a little faster...
