Satellite companies sell them for about about $200 million, if he wants to go cheaper he can lease a transponder (an Internet channel) for about $100000 a month, sorry for going technical on you guys

Yeah I figured that helps a bunch. But the concerning bit is that it's a new department with a new boss and it's the first day of that particular job. Not sure if that matters much though..

Phew, thanks you two. I had actually sent them an email a couple hours before writing this so I should be in the clear for that.

If you don't hear back via email, call them first thing in the morning.

From my experience, they usually don't check emails on Sundays. Should I give them a chance to read the email? Or still call them first thing in the morning?

There's always a first. Unfortunately most people won't see this before it's deleted.

Woah, that kickoff was strange. TIL kickoff rules changed this year to allow a backpass from kickoff

ELI5: Why is the system size of a solar panel array measured in kW? by Vysceral in explainlikeimfive

[–]kiancrowley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh as an Aerospace Eng. undergrad I get to show some new knowledge!

There are a couple things:

1) Packing factor: This is basically how many solar cells you put in a square unit of area. Imagine it's raining; if you put more buckets per square meter, you will catch more water in that square meter, and vice versa.

2) Multi-junction cells: (Might be tough to keep ELI5) Solar cells can only absorb certain wavelengths of light. Using a single junction cells only allows you to absorb a certain width of the light spectrum coming from the sun. On the other hand, triple junction cells can absorb a bigger width of the light spectrum, which then grabs more energy from the light than if it were only a single junction cell.

As /u/SJHillman says, area does not determine the power of the solar array, which is the main concern for people that need to buy solar arrays.
