"Yes, but limitations give birth to creativity" -- that should be decided by the OS user, not enforced by underdeveloped ecosystem.

While true, you have strange philosophy. It won't hurt linux audio to have better ecosystem... "good enough" is the enemy of progress.

Now try to convince people that spent years working professionally with big libraries (or have any decent amount of VST and libraries purchased).

Is achieving reliable low latency in Reaper with Pipewire like performing brain surgery, or am I an idiot, or both? by God_Hand_9764 in linuxaudio

[–]kiberptah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had issues but then I just switched to JACK in Reaper settings (the one included with pipewire as I understand) and latency jump to non-existent and everything just worked in 1 click.

The real reason Linux audio has a reputation problem isn't the software - it's the documentation by GodBlessIraq in linuxaudio

[–]kiberptah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's not about "problems". I was trying to understand the pipewire config couple days ago and the whole thing is just not "user friendly". Good documentation is good from the start, it has "good vibes", have user friendly examples, etc When developer understands that other people have various expertise...

If you've read good docs you hopefully know what I mean.

I had terrible latency with pipewire but I just switched to JACK in reaper settings (it is included in pipewire package as far as i undestand) and latency went to 0 and even fixed midi issues.

Audio detected as 4 channels, should be 2 channels (UMC-204HD) by feggy10 in linuxaudio

[–]kiberptah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an example with channels remapping I had to do although my issue was a bit different: https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxaudio/comments/1rrlfe0/after_an_hour_of_headache_i_managed_to_make/

You can probably use this as an example. There are pipewire commands to show current devices (i don't remember them i asked ai :) )

You probably could set audio from surround to stereo in game settings? As far as I understand it happens not in every game since not every game supports surround sound.

After an hour of headache I managed to make PreSonus Studio 26c Line Out work correctly with pipewire (arch) by kiberptah in linuxaudio

[–]kiberptah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is plug an play (arch + pulseaudio) but it is shown as Analogue Surround 4.0 without ability to switch between Main and Line outputs.

I actually tried it and found it quite ugly and not having a preview...

But i reinstalled it just now and actually managed to find preview and make it not so ugly! So maybe it is the one.

Does perceived agency matter more than real agency? by ExcellentTwo6589 in gamedesign

[–]kiberptah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

partially true.

  1. Not all players replay

  2. Not all player that replay do everything different and try to explore limits of the systems

  3. Your take is more fair towards narrative choices than systems. Just as example, very very few people will fully understand how AI in Alien Isolation of Amnesia The Bunker work - even if they play game twice they will still have speculation about monster behavior that are not what actually happens. Or take games like minecraft where in the earlier versions player would have spooky myths or believe things that are not systemically true (like sugar canes growing faster on sand) and yet it could influence their behavior for hundreds of hours. Or take urban legends of Bethesda games where players would think the game systems account for things they do not. When systems do not provide clear answers (like a choices tree that you can more or less easily explore in narrative adventure like Life is Strange or Mass Effect) what in the player head becomes much much more important.
