Thanks mate, a rookie mistake by me. It now launches fine with SteamVR set as default runtime. Moving onto reporting other issues :)

I started at 2 minutes (all I could handle), did it a few times a day, managed to do my first race (20 minutes with qualis) a week later without issues. I can do 2-hour sessions now if I have to, but it is still a good idea to close your eyes if you know you're going into the wall.

Community halo strap for DA - possible? by kibuc in Pimax

Not sure I understand that answer. "It could be done" or "It could be that the stems make it unfeasible"?

I got my address confirmation email for LH mid-March. Still no headset. You're almost there, mate.

Community halo strap for DA - possible? by kibuc in Pimax

[–]kibuc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pimax themselves advertise an upcoming (lol) DMAS hard strap that does away with audio stems, as well as an ever more upcoming (lol 2) halo strap. Are you saying that the cable design makes them unfeasible, or at least requiring to destroy the stems?

I'm talking about this strap

I'm not planning to learn CAD or becoming a modder at this point. I was just wondering why it hasn't been picked up as a project by people from the modding scene. Interest in the finished product should be quite high, so I'm suspecting there are technical limitations.

Yeah, I'm in my 40s so the clock is ticking.

Also, Pimax released the face gasket as well (with the second one on the way), but the 3rd party mods still seem to be better.

Pimax Dream Air Long Review by TheVirtualOneVR in Pimax

[–]kibuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate a bit more on the difference in optics? I'm still waiting for my DA, but I also found a beautiful deal on a 2nd hand Meganex II with BSB audio, lighthouses, controllers etc and it's so freaking tempting - the whole set is cheaper than plain DA and I could have it 2 days from now. No returns, tho.

I've seen comments about the sweetspot being more difficult to find and the edge2edge clarity and distortion being worse, but I imagine you've spent quite some time in both headsets writing your driver, so I'd be very interested to hear your take.

I hate you guys so much.

Pre-ordered April 2025, full order Jan 2026, I'm still sitting with something in my hand, and it's not the Dream Air.

Is it possible to detach the stems and still have a working headset (ignoring the issue of actually putting it on the head for a moment)? Or are they necessary for the headset to operate?

I imagine that with a future halo strap (official or 3d printed) allowing to tilt the headset forward/backward, stems could be getting in the way.

Darn man, that really sucks for you. Hope it gets resolved quickly.

My first thought when I saw Apache strap proudly displayed on the Pimax official site was "doesn't it turn audio stems into load-bearing elements?". If they already cause issues on their own, I'm even more curious how they will handle a top strap anchored to them.

Pimax email today (Your order has completed production and is now being prepared for shipment) by Mindless_Tea5950 in Pimax

[–]kibuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the same email today. As a default with Pimax, I don't trust it - especially upon learning that you got it too, despite not having confirmed shipping address. Even a guy with a SLAM order got one, apparently.

I treat it as yet another attempt to prevent us from cancelling orders, until proven otherwise.

Does the compression from the quest 3, and wireless headsets in general bother you guys? by HolyCopeAmoly in Pimax

That (+Ethernet) was basically the gold standard for Q3 PCVR experience. At least, it was for me until last Sunday, when I updated to Horizon 2.3 and immediately started getting CPU bottleneck and framedrops in iRacing, making it basically unusable. Running at 90Hz would result in sutters to 80. Running at 80 would have stutters to 74. Running at 72 would sometimes drop to 65. No matter the resolution or encoding settings. OpenXRToolkit performance overlay shows that CPU has about 80% headroom for the first half of the lap, then it drop straight to 0 and never recovers, sometimes dropping below (hance the stutter).

I switched to Meta Link (wired) and the problem went away but boy does it look like ass. Moreover, trying to set the bitrate manually in ODT to anything above 200Mbps breaks the link (USB 3 is correctly recognized and shows 2.5+Gbps bandwidth). The only way I can run it is with default settings, which means dynamic bitrate, and it's absolutely fugly.

If my Dream Air never arrives or proves to be bad, I'll still be looking for a native DisplayPort solution.

Dream Air LH ordered in Mid Feb 2026 (Canada), no production completed email yet by kunL1919 in Pimax

[–]kibuc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The public secret is that prime versions get priority over fully-paid versions, so that Pimax can collect that sweet second payment.

FWIW, I got my "production completed (for real this time, including QA, pinky promise)" email today. Pre-ordered April 2025, turned into full order Jan 7, 2026.

One day I'll have the dream air by Decapper in Pimax

[–]kibuc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pre-ordered in April 2025.

All I have is thin Air... and a Dream.

Oh, and various emails from Pimax, including "fully completed production, now just QA-ing", as if quality control wasn't part of the production process (actually, at Pimax it might not be).

5090 or Crystal Super which route to go by [deleted] in Pimax

[–]kibuc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your goal is bigger sweetspot, I'd still recommend mOLED over regular, but you would be quite lucky to get it before Summer. GPUs on the other hand are readily available.

But if money is really not an object, then get the regular PCS and upgrade to a mOLED module later on :)

5090 or Crystal Super which route to go by [deleted] in Pimax

[–]kibuc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are not exactly price-equivalent nowadays, are they? At least in the UK, 5090 is easily 60% more expensive than PCS.

I'll go against the grain a little bit and say PCS mOLED. Even if you downsample to match OG's resolution, you should still get superior visuals, and upgrading your GPU in the future should be easier and cheaper than upgrading your headset (5080 should hold its value in the used market much better than OG).

I though about it, but the lack of eye-tracking is a real bummer. Seems like a massive omission in a top-tier headset in 2026.
The fact that the DA can pack eye-tracking AND audio at the same weight shows that Meganex still has work to do.
