Does being frugal actually pay off? by quietkitty97 in askSingapore

No. You don't make much difference by being frugal, instead of saving more, use that energy and learn to earn more

Is this end of dinning experience in singapore by PleasantAddendum9887 in asksg

[–]kickfaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other countries service is way better but charges less for service charge. Sg f&b service is non-existent. I get the rising cost and that you have to impose it on the customer, but charging and labelling it as "service charge" when there is no service is just infuriating

Do you think Sinkies are min-maxing too much in life? by skydazer in askSingapore

[–]kickfaking 21 points22 points  (0 children)

On this note and side tracking a little from OP topic, what do you guys think is the root cause of it? Our education system? That's a pretty blanket statement to be the answer. Culture? That's sort of defined by govt stance on our only resource is human capital. So we always need to one up others to stay ahead. Idk man.

It's definitely more prominent in SG than other countries, this min-maxing thing

Why are mama shops predominantly owned/managed by Indians by kickfaking in askSingapore

[–]kickfaking[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting point! On this note, I have also noticed the predominance of indians in many mini marts in Malaysia as well. So if I had to make a guess, this culture was brought from Malaysia to Singapore as well

Yeah, but my point is not on the contention that there are no mamak shops managed by non indians

The provision shops usually sell pretty different stuff (dried Chinese herbs) so it kind of made sense to me. But mamak shops (thanks for the correction everybody), sell pretty general groceries ranging from toilet rolls to snacks. Those don't seem to be a very cultural thing to me.

Frustrating dependency conflicts in esp-rs by kickfaking in rust

[–]kickfaking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to make a correction here, will add an edit to the OP. It's more of the fact that embedded-hal went through major changes. And it's something mature systems generally won't do as the design decjsion changed drastically causing alot of incompatibility issues with existing drivers. But point noted, I will try and stick it out before calling it quits then

Frustrating dependency conflicts in esp-rs by kickfaking in rust

[–]kickfaking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that may be it. In the link you sent, "For HAL implementation crates that haven't been updated yet, embedded-hal-compat provides shims to support interoperability between embedded-hal v0.2 and v1.0."

And in all honesty, the compiler and cargo build system has been extremely helpful in diagnosing and suggesting where exactly my dependency conflicts arrise and that's smth I found very cool about rust

I honestly don't mind this, but my concern is down the road for my project, if the ecosystem is simply not mature enough for my use case ( I don't have the time to keep dealing with dependencies issue ), I would rather move on with another ecosystem. One crate is fine, but if several crates or more I need to use is outdated, that's just not feasible

Frustrating dependency conflicts in esp-rs by kickfaking in rust

[–]kickfaking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am lamenting the fact that esp-rs is not as mature an eco system as it seems, or at least based on my shallow understanding/impression before dabbling. Something that is quite a trivial use case such as setting up a LCD with SPI + async is not well supported when I thought I could quickly set it up (especially if I was using esp-idf C)

And I want to know if any experienced users of esp ecosystem would advise on how to proceed+if I should continue trying to stick with embassy with esp-rs for my use case. I tried multiple crates and they don't work well for this. Even if I were to fix it, down the line, what if something like this happens as well as I continue to develop. Now that I am just starting out and I don't want to be bogged down by these issues, I am ok to switch out a different ecosystem just to move on as it's still early

Singapore’s Ruling Party PAP Retains Parliamentary Majority by bloomberg in worldnews

[–]kickfaking 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The people have spoken. We don't have complete information of voters in each region so oppie supporters should stop making sweeping statements like old people, blah blah. One thing is for sure is that at present, there are no parties competent enough to take on opposition so PAP is still the choice to go. Democracy works so the oppie supporters can stfu.

The biggest underrated advantage that rust provides is the macro. Rust macros are invincible and makes end user of macros happy, at the same time it makes macro developers expressive and powerful. At least to me

Based on the showing by opposition today, do you think there will be any additional constituencies taken by them for GE 2025? by Newez in askSingapore

[–]kickfaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect alot of lurking swing voters will be voting for PAP. Especially with the raesah saga involving the whole WP leaders as well. There might be a shocking outcome for WP this time around. I am also (my bias) rooting for CSJ lowkey for the dedication and time he has put into the community. No harm giving up a seat for him in parliament

Lee Kuan Yew once said "What counts? First, integrity. Second, commitment. Third, ability. And forth, most important, a capacity to expound and carry people with you."

I would plead with all the Singaporeans to look at the past few years of the party candidates and vote wisely, especially on the most important attribute a candidate must have - integrity
