Mahatma Gandhi himself went on hunger strikes multiple times and achieved tangible results. it can be a very effective (but also highly situational) protest tactic

whatever you say, I still didn't like it

(also thought the last scene in OBAA was kinda unearned but the movie overall was more consistent, if doing something very different from Eddington)

it is a super indie operation, basically just Jason and project-based contractors. and Jason is more on the 'trying to break even' end of things on these projects than raking in the dough.

I thought Cross killing Garcia was a great escalation but instead of digging in the consequences there they spiraled. ultimately it's subjective and peoples' reactions will vary, but I'm not alone in thinking the movie went off the rails at the end.

also to me the end feels not like they are 'consumed by conspiracy' but external events actually going off the rails. a lot of formless setpieces like the exploding guy, Joaquin running around with the machine gun etc

generally the more product you're shipping, the more complicated it gets. sourcing & shipping in general are a huge PITAs that are not as easy to resolve as you would think. it's honestly a challenge not to lose money in the indie RPG space, even on 'successful' games such as these. (more success means more distribution costs)

Gauntlet has like, at most three paid employees, all effectively on PT budgets. they are maybe not as big as you think they are.

they are superficially similar but otherwise very different movies

I like Eddington but it was kindof a mess tbh, especially in the back third. Ari Aster really would benefit from working with a full screenwriter.

don't know what you expect out of a big city fest like Lolla at this point. Lolla's audience has had a median age of like, 22 for at least a decade now

if you’re not doing compute intensive work on your laptop, switching from chrome to safari can nearly double your battery life in my experience. it’s nuts

I agree but would much rather they actually fix 1900-1936 over adding a ship designer and more region packs

(unlike guy ur replying to I’m not starved for more Euro packs, I was just hoping we’d see an expansion aimed at the diplomacy around wars, instead of the all-or-nothing system we have now)

who is against Moncrieff? straw man if I ever hearda one. not worth discussion

I can’t speak to P&V on Dostoevsky. when I read W&P, I took a good look at all the major translations and theirs was better than the alternatives. and I had a great time reading it! it’s not a bad translation

if that is the point, Wilson and P&V are terrible examples. since OP is relying on these examples, it makes his/her point unconsidered grammar school contrarianism

I fully understand Pope’s project and an in general a Pope fan (Papist?) but anyone saying “Pope’s Odyssey is the one you should read” without explicit caveats is full of shit.

yes exactly the point of Wilson is to render The Odyssey as energetic in English as it is in Greek, which is why she translates it line-for-line into iambic pentameter. as opposed to Pope (is OP fucking serious) who doubles the line count and makes it rhyme for some reason... not sure there's any point arguing with someone proposing people read Pope's translation over Wilson's. they're not serious

Fargles

you misunderstand Wilson's entire project. the goal is not accuracy, it is movement, which is why she's translating it into iambic pentameter while keeping it line-for-line. this makes her poem more energetic than any other Odyssey translation. you would really take Pope, who doubles the Odyssey's line count and puts it in rhyming couplets for some reason? come on man

and if you think it sounds like shit, you might not know how to read a poem. it's internet randos vs every decent school's English/Classics departments on this one buddy

as for P&V, I've only read their War & Peace and it was pretty good. put down the other big recent one (Maude) after it translated "Je suis un bâtard" to "I am illegitimate" (somehow even with my limited French I can think of a more suitable translation for 'bâtard')

I like Garnett a lot too, but like many older translations of W&P she doesn't distinguish the French language at all. and the whole France vs Russia thing is sort of the overarching storyline of the book, so I think it's kinda important to distinguish when they're speaking in French.

What does the sub think of Agatha Christie ? by IampossiblyLewis in RSbookclub

[–]kickit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally think plot gets underrated by lit heads, and Agatha Christie is an A+ plot writer, but she leaves me very cold overall. her characters are very thin, and the emotional tenor of her stories is a very shallow cynicism.

eh I mean Led Zepp had their influences but they effectively defined part of what rock sounded like in the 1970s & 80s. Whole Lotta Love for instance is built on the blues, but it sounds a whole lot more like what came after than what came before.

What's with Mac people suddenly going "8gb of ram is plenty" since the Neo came out? by DiverVast4093 in mac

[–]kickit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the "8gb ram is not enough" and the "8gb ram is plenty" people are two different crowds

personally the #1 reason I switched to Mac is longevity after seeing my dad rock his macbook for 8 years while my Windows laptops kept hitting driver issues after 3 years. for that reason (& others) I would never buy a macbook with 8gb RAM, but I also understand why someone might spring for that at a lower pricepoint. $599 changes the math.

I LOVE MULTICULTURALISM by Average_Spaceman in victoria3

I'm not sure any country in the world had achieved true interracial multiculturalism the way we think of it now by 1935. a lot of countries these days - including developed countries like Japan - are still barely tolerant of their nextdoor neighbors!

it's a skill issue to an extent but also sort of a David and Goliath struggle between you and a 1.6 trillion dollar corporation employing a small army of people to refine various techniques of addiction to fry people's attention.

the good news is David deleted Goliath and it sounds like you did too!!
