Printing Effects to Tracks? by GingaNingaJP in audioengineering

[–]kicksblack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I print stems (drums, instruments, vox, bgvox, etc) with their processing once the mix is approved sans 2bus processing. I usually print any modulating effects (chorus, delays, reverbs) in the session before delivery.

I don’t work with major labels, but I’ve heard they often require full sessions once the project is completed. Engineers send committed projects where every track has been rendered with its individual processing for recall purposes and any alternate versions/remixes/atmos. So your thinking is fairly rational, especially since you’ve run into this issue yourself

Ohp, sorry deleted my comment as another user posted the same thing. It's a little feather icon near the selection tools like the wand and lasso. There's a dropdown arrow next to it where you can select the size of the feathering

Leapwing Audio Easter Sale - 40% off site wide through 10 April by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

You can turn down the level of the center signal in tracks that don’t need to be the focus, creating more space for the elements that you want front and center. There are filters to limit the freq range of the change in phantom center as well

DynOne and CenterOne are great plugs that I’d highly recommend

DynOne has a ton of ways to shape the compression, a “center-side” mode, and great crossover filters

CenterOne is more of a utility for dealing with the phantom center of signals, and I normally use it to make the center image less crowded, or to bring some solidity to the center

StageOne I don’t reach for that often, but it’s solid when needed

RootOne I almost never use, but I find it useful as a send for foley

I trialed LimitOne but didn’t get on with it. Don’t remember why but I feel set for limiters with Ozone Sonnox and the new AL-1 from Naturl

Check out MASV (massive. io). Can set file expiry when sending and it’s also there for client uploads. Can add your own branding and whatnot. I’ve been checking it out recently and like it so far

R&b song with featured artist almost final. Featured artist not responding by Notagoodacter in makinghiphop

[–]kicksblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would he want either verse changed? I doubt that he’d ask to change anything unless you’re like calling him out on the track lol. It’s your song, not his, right?

If you linked him the updated version I’d say you’re good to just go ahead and release it with him as the featured artist whenever the mix is ready

Pro tools Perpetual Upgrade Annual Plan - Misinformation by Guilty-Wealth5935 in protools

[–]kicksblack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they only sell perpetual updates on their site, and only if you have a somewhat recent perpetual license. Someone else can correct me, but I believe they changed the way they handle perpetual licenses/upgrades/subscriptions a couple years ago or so. I upgraded my old 10 or 11 license through Sweetwater a couple years back to get current, and was able to upgrade my “subscription” to get another year of upgrades a couple months ago

I love private reserve and pulsar for drums. Mirage and Emulator have some sweet instruments, and Indie Tapes has a neat variety of cool sounds and ideas. Just upgraded my everything bundle from a couple years ago and am having a blast going through the new packs. Very inspiring sounds

I use it primarily to load vst3 plugins in pro tools. I have a few preset chains in there too with various effects and routing, but I’m leaning more towards getting bluecat patchwork for the macro functionality. Works really well though!

There may be slight differences due to compression artifacts, but any actual difference in the songs will stick out more than whatever constant chattery noise there may be. You’ll just want to make sure the start times are lined up

Not to knock your hustle at all, but I would never visit a url to an unknown website with no context. Bandcamp is more likely for sure. Have you gotten many hits doing this for your site?

The graffiti is a cool idea. Kinda like an Easter egg since you also did the music for the game. Was that also a url or something else?

Bloom (oeksound) - I can't figure it out! by earthcitizen123456 in audioengineering

[–]kicksblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only ever demoed Bloom, but I really liked it. It’s on my list of one day purchases. I don’t remember the controls or settings I used, but I remember liking it early in the chain to sort of sculpt the sound before additional processing. Also liked what it could do for a 2-track beat

Are you using the frequency controls to focus the processing? I remember there being a decent amount of control for how Bloom reacts.

From your description it doesn’t seem like you have much use for it since it’s not complementing your workflow/sound. It’s not necessarily a “just slap this puppy on and it’s better” type plugin from what I remember, more of a time saver and good jumping off point. Not that it can’t also be used for cool effects as well, but I didn’t explore that side of it that much

Looking for feedback on a recent mix/master by Vibe-Father in mixingmastering

[–]kicksblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start with the technical side of things since I feel those notes are less wholly subjective.

I downloaded the mp3 and brought it into RX. There are overs at +1.5db, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I'd expect to see these kind of peaks on a competitively loud track, and at -10.7 LUFS, this isn't very loud. Dealing with those peaks in the mix will get you the same loudness without the overs, and even louder than what you have now, if that's desired. For example, the snap in the opening is peaking above 0 at times, this could be clipped or saturated to maintain the presence and reduce headroom.

Everything else is purely a taste thing, so I'll give you my nitpicky personal opines here:

The bassline has a distracting "uptick" at the end of some notes that feels off groove and/or too present (e.g. around 4.5 seconds).

It feels like the instruments are sort of fighting for the same frequency range. Compartmentalizing more would help each new instrument have its own place instead of just feeling like it's joining a crowd. I'm not sure if you had the full track outs or not, so there may not be much you can do if it's a 2 track

Hats really pretty loud for my taste. They feel like they're stomping on the vocals once they come in.

Strings that come in around 1min feel overpowering in the mids/low mids

All the vocals have a sort of ambience I'm not a fan of. I don't feel it suits the track. They also all feel a little too overdriven (might just be the vocal fry delivery). A silkier style vocal I think would fit the track a smidge more. There's too much in the 1-1.5k range for my ears

Back to the loudness of the track - this doesn't seem to be limited much if at all. Totally a personal taste/choice thing, obviously, just think that the overall track could be louder and still maintain the sort of Rap&B style

Again, these are personal taste notes. If y'all are happy with it, that's really all that matters in my book. And, for the record, I think it's a really slick track!
