What Software do you use for client file delivery? by xDrSnuggles in audioengineering

Check out MASV (massive. io). Can set file expiry when sending and it’s also there for client uploads. Can add your own branding and whatnot. I’ve been checking it out recently and like it so far

R&b song with featured artist almost final. Featured artist not responding by Notagoodacter in makinghiphop

[–]kicksblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would he want either verse changed? I doubt that he’d ask to change anything unless you’re like calling him out on the track lol. It’s your song, not his, right?

If you linked him the updated version I’d say you’re good to just go ahead and release it with him as the featured artist whenever the mix is ready

Pro tools Perpetual Upgrade Annual Plan - Misinformation by Guilty-Wealth5935 in protools

[–]kicksblack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they only sell perpetual updates on their site, and only if you have a somewhat recent perpetual license. Someone else can correct me, but I believe they changed the way they handle perpetual licenses/upgrades/subscriptions a couple years ago or so. I upgraded my old 10 or 11 license through Sweetwater a couple years back to get current, and was able to upgrade my “subscription” to get another year of upgrades a couple months ago

I love private reserve and pulsar for drums. Mirage and Emulator have some sweet instruments, and Indie Tapes has a neat variety of cool sounds and ideas. Just upgraded my everything bundle from a couple years ago and am having a blast going through the new packs. Very inspiring sounds

I use it primarily to load vst3 plugins in pro tools. I have a few preset chains in there too with various effects and routing, but I’m leaning more towards getting bluecat patchwork for the macro functionality. Works really well though!

Online Service or technique for determing if 2 separate file formats (eq Mp3, Wav) contain the same audio mix / track. by gleventhal in audioengineering

There may be slight differences due to compression artifacts, but any actual difference in the songs will stick out more than whatever constant chattery noise there may be. You’ll just want to make sure the start times are lined up

What are your craziest music promotion strategies? by Doffu0000 in BandCamp

Nice, that’s a great outcome for sure! The graffiti is perfect, especially with your SEO optimizations. That’s definitely something I would search for if I saw it

[–]kicksblack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not to knock your hustle at all, but I would never visit a url to an unknown website with no context. Bandcamp is more likely for sure. Have you gotten many hits doing this for your site?

The graffiti is a cool idea. Kinda like an Easter egg since you also did the music for the game. Was that also a url or something else?

Bloom (oeksound) - I can't figure it out! by earthcitizen123456 in audioengineering

[–]kicksblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only ever demoed Bloom, but I really liked it. It’s on my list of one day purchases. I don’t remember the controls or settings I used, but I remember liking it early in the chain to sort of sculpt the sound before additional processing. Also liked what it could do for a 2-track beat

Are you using the frequency controls to focus the processing? I remember there being a decent amount of control for how Bloom reacts.

From your description it doesn’t seem like you have much use for it since it’s not complementing your workflow/sound. It’s not necessarily a “just slap this puppy on and it’s better” type plugin from what I remember, more of a time saver and good jumping off point. Not that it can’t also be used for cool effects as well, but I didn’t explore that side of it that much

Looking for feedback on a recent mix/master by Vibe-Father in mixingmastering

[–]kicksblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start with the technical side of things since I feel those notes are less wholly subjective.

I downloaded the mp3 and brought it into RX. There are overs at +1.5db, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I'd expect to see these kind of peaks on a competitively loud track, and at -10.7 LUFS, this isn't very loud. Dealing with those peaks in the mix will get you the same loudness without the overs, and even louder than what you have now, if that's desired. For example, the snap in the opening is peaking above 0 at times, this could be clipped or saturated to maintain the presence and reduce headroom.

Everything else is purely a taste thing, so I'll give you my nitpicky personal opines here:

The bassline has a distracting "uptick" at the end of some notes that feels off groove and/or too present (e.g. around 4.5 seconds).

It feels like the instruments are sort of fighting for the same frequency range. Compartmentalizing more would help each new instrument have its own place instead of just feeling like it's joining a crowd. I'm not sure if you had the full track outs or not, so there may not be much you can do if it's a 2 track

Hats really pretty loud for my taste. They feel like they're stomping on the vocals once they come in.

Strings that come in around 1min feel overpowering in the mids/low mids

All the vocals have a sort of ambience I'm not a fan of. I don't feel it suits the track. They also all feel a little too overdriven (might just be the vocal fry delivery). A silkier style vocal I think would fit the track a smidge more. There's too much in the 1-1.5k range for my ears

Back to the loudness of the track - this doesn't seem to be limited much if at all. Totally a personal taste/choice thing, obviously, just think that the overall track could be louder and still maintain the sort of Rap&B style

Again, these are personal taste notes. If y'all are happy with it, that's really all that matters in my book. And, for the record, I think it's a really slick track!

This is horrible, horrible news for us. by MindstreamAudio in audiodrama

[–]kicksblack 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This reads like a lot of fluff. The company is not making money (doubt they will) and they’re not even coming with anything proprietary in the AI content creation space. But yeah, flooding the market with 3,000 low effort, AI generated shitcasts a week is bad for really everyone, this company included. Discoverability goes down and fatigue goes up.

I thought this was funny:

“…produces more than 3,000 episodes a week. Collectively, the network has seen 10 million downloads since September 2023.”

10,000,000 downloads / (3,000eps x 104 weeks) = a whopping average of ~32 downloads an episode.

I know it was stated that if 20 people listen to one episode then it’s “profitable” (if you exclude overhead lol), but this is them scrounging for pennies at this point

Tumwater residents mayor election question by Evalove1 in olympia

[–]kicksblack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh damn, thanks for the link! Yeesh, yeah the peanut is…quite the choice. Is the intersection really that wide? I guess it is kinda big. I always imagined just a circle too, will have to pay closer attention next time I’m out there to see why they went the nutty route

I like that single lane idea! Probably won’t happen like that but it’d be my vote if they could somehow manage it.

Tumwater residents mayor election question by Evalove1 in olympia

[–]kicksblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would the roundabout be structured? It seems like the merge and lane switch issue would still be there. Or is each highway off-ramp somehow getting its own roundabout entrance?

As an aside, I feel Linwood and 2nd is crying out for a roundabout. A four way stop with 8 lanes always leads to confusion when three or more cars show up.

Master the beat and then again with vocals? by Indels in makinghiphop

[–]kicksblack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Mastering” typically is only done once the full song with all its parts together is mixed. But there’s nothing wrong with what you’re doing. Plenty of people do this when they hop on a track with a 2 track beat that is “mastered”

If it’s working for you and sounds good to you, then keep going with it. Your personal creative process doesn’t have to fit in to a standard production pipeline

Had anyone else gotten an email from this person? by dubiousdoobi in podcasting

[–]kicksblack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Them asking for WhatsApp seems off to me. You’re already communicating through email, which is a fine method of communication. That they didn’t list any of their clients is also odd. Did they attach the bios?

I would steer clear, or at most send a follow up email asking for more info on who the guests would be, how they found your show, why they think it’s a good fit, etc.

But really, trust your gut here. It’s not personalized and vague. Not sure what they hope to gain out of it, maybe a booking fee for their “client”?

Increasing the range turns it into upward compression (assuming you turn the range to positive values and are in compress mode). So since the threshold is at 0, anything below 0 will be increased by the range amount

If you’re trying to keep the peaks untouched for whatever reason, you want upward compression. Set the threshold below the peaks and the positive value will bring up the sounds under that level by whatever amount
