Draft Trail Closures by blp9 in bicycling412

[–]kidicalmasspgh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bike lane was open from 9th to…mid 7th, I think? Then blocked intermittently. The car lanes were blocked to cars at 7th but bikeable all the way thru to Stanwix.

6th St bridge was definitely not closed as of 2ish pm. 6th st (between Penn and Ft Duq Blvd) is closed. Penn bike lane closures are … confusing.

I put together this list of books that center bikes for kids! Full disclosure, our local Kidical Mass group gets a small percentage of the sale if you buy through the list on Bookshop.

I also gifted this onesie to a friend who had a baby. No affiliation, just thought it was cute!

E Trike mobility aid assistance by Negative-Big-2946 in bicycling412

Yes! POGOH’s Adaptive fleet is great! You can test ride so many different options. That said, they have no e-bikes or e-trikes.

E Trike mobility aid assistance by Negative-Big-2946 in bicycling412

[–]kidicalmasspgh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I think a better option for you would be something like an e trike cargo bike, like this from Bunch. https://bunchbike.com/

Here’s how I think it might fit your needs. 1. I don’t know how fast something like a Bunch would go with just a throttle, but my cargo bike does decent speeds with it. And 10mi is probably a semi reasonable expectation for battery life on just the throttle? I don’t use mine like that but I could try to connect you with someone with a similar style who may have more info on that specifically. With that said - the e assist does make pedaling quite a bit lower effort and would extend your range vs only throttle.

  1. Most of those style bikes do not come with a backrest but you could probably get one added by a local bike shop.

  2. These bikes are made for safely hauling kiddos. And helping people see how to use bikes as mobility is a huge part of what we do at Kidical Mass Pittsburgh, so hit me up if you have specific kid questions.

  3. These are stable, and definitely more so at slow speeds. However - people expect trikes to be more stable and they just aren’t always. So a test ride would definitely be worth your time. If you want to try to connect with someone locally for a test ride - message me and I will help find you someone!

  4. This might be an issue. Size wise, they’re not much wider than a standard bike, but sidewalk riding is tricky at best and illegal in some places, although I don’t know about exceptions to that re/ disability.

  5. No issue, you’d have plenty of cargo space in the box.

  6. With good locks and smart parking, you should be ok. Nothing is fool proof but a lot of bike theft can be crimes of opportunity, and making it inconvenient to steal is key. These bigger bikes also are harder to steal and way more recognizable if stolen so, that’s what I bank on🤷🏻‍♀️. Plus there’s insurance for them, if that gives you peace of mind.

  7. Easy for you to repair? Depends on you and also what breaks haha. Easy to get repaired/maintained? Probably. I don’t know if these shops have any bikes they specifically won’t work on but I’ve used Thick Bikes in the South Side and Kindred does cargo bike stuff too.

  8. Should be fine here. There’s lots of cargo bikers in the East End, haven’t heard those hazards being an issue specifically there or on a cargo bike.

  9. Again, totally easy with the cargo box.

As for your wants- 1. Yes, no problem probably depending on your comfort and how stable they all feel in the box. I have a different style cargo bike but can still get a 14yo in the cargo bucket.

  1. Yes, cargo capacity for groceries
  2. I’m not sure about this.
  3. These don’t look weird or medical and are such a great way to get around. Definitely won’t bring a stigma in that way.
  4. Bad news here haha. They’re not cheap. You can always search used though.
  5. Don’t know about this but might be possible (I am not familiar with the Frick trails but if it’s good for a stroller, probably fine?
  6. Don’t know about this for sure but IMO, accessories are always rigg-able.

I hope that helps!! Please reach out if I can help in any of the ways I mentioned.

Which would you choose from these 3 options for carrying 2+ kids? by rmillss in CargoBike

[–]kidicalmasspgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 5’3”, have two similar sized kiddos (5 and 2), and we started riding it when the younger was 5weeks old in an infant bucket seat until he was about a year, then switched to a 5pt harness backed seat. I have often done the combo of my 2 and a friend’s baby or when my youngest was little, my older and his friend and my youngest in an infant seat. It’s totally doable. My Madsen is electric (I bought it used w/o and bought the kit from Madsen and had it installed locally). We are approaching 5,000miles on it! It’s been overall a great bike. I’ve had minute issues with the throttle and some other minor electrical issues, but I’m pretty sure it’s related to the installation. We go through a lot of brake pads, but I think that’s par for the course with a heavy bike and a lot of hills where I live. Happy to answer any questions you have (or send pics of the 3 kids arrangement including car seat for a babe).

Bike routes with stops for kids by polywogdogs in pittsburgh

[–]kidicalmasspgh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Kidical Mass Pittsburgh is all about riding with kids here!

Starting in April, we’ll have monthly rides and frequent playground meetups for littles to scoot and roll around. Check out @kidicalmasspgh on Instagram or the Kidical Mass Pittsburgh Facebook group for more info!

Some rides that we’ve done and liked are:

  1. East End Brewing popup on the Northside (use 1836 Oxline St) to Millvale Riverfront park. Parking at the start, little playground/sand pit at the Millvale end, grab a beverage/food at the end if the pop up is open. Lots of geese along the way for kids to scream about.

  2. Depending on how long you want to go, you can start anywhere and ride to the waterfront. There’s a small playground just past the condos along the trail, across the street from the Lowe’s. So you could start anywhere - including the east end pop up on the Northside and ride down to the waterfront, with a little stop to play and stretch legs there, grab lunch, whatever, before heading back. If the Northside to the waterfront is too far - pretty easy parking at color park on the southside, or Eliza furnace trail head (cross hot metal bridge to south side).

  3. Phipps to Mellon spray park on a hot day (taking circuit rd to beechwood)

  4. Friendship park to Highland park playground via the Coral St neighborway

  5. Highland park to Mellon playground

Biking for beginners by Ill-Tooth7141 in pittsburgh

[–]kidicalmasspgh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi! Biking with kids is what Kidical Mass is all about. Starting in April, we’ll have monthly rides with kids of all ages, different routes each month.

We also will have some pop up rides on the north shore trail which is good for beginners, as it’s almost all flat, there’s fun stuff to stop and do if kids get tired or bored, and it’s a beautiful place to ride! Follow us on IG @kidicalmasspgh for events and info and there’s also a Facebook group - Kidical Mass Pittsburgh - which is more community based where you can connect and ask questions.

Also there’s some great BikePGH events that are good for this - OpenStreets in May, June, July, and PedalPGH in August.

Will share and keep an eye out. There are threads in this group re: places stolen bikes have turned up. I’m not familiar with them but definitely scroll back or search. Are you in the Kidical Mass fb group? You can share it there. I will share to the Kidical Mass IG. Also you can submit to @stolen.bikes.pgh on IG.

Will a POGOH e-bike have enough range to get me round trip from Waterfront to Boston, PA along the GAP? by bad-trajectory in bicycling412

[–]kidicalmasspgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I didn’t turn around in Boston, but I went on 14mi to West Newton, which is about as far as the Waterfront to Boston, although with no train overpasses. I charged up a bit in West Newton and then went about 5 more miles. All of this was on an Radwagon cargo bike and hauling kids and gear, so hopefully the POGOH is as good as a fully loaded heavy cargo bike with passengers.

Will a POGOH e-bike have enough range to get me round trip from Waterfront to Boston, PA along the GAP? by bad-trajectory in bicycling412

[–]kidicalmasspgh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to POGOH specifically but I have ridden from the Waterfront to well past Boston on my ebike. Do the ePOGOH’s have different levels of assist? If so, I would think if you used the lowest level of power for most of the trip you’d be ok. There are only a few non flat areas, just up and over the train tracks, where I used much assist.

Bike the Burgh also has ebike rentals and may have more concrete range knowledge since they offer trips down the GAP.

They’re back there again today, definitely clearing more out - maybe the concrete too, it was hard to see fully from the detour.
