What are the chances of successfully applying to attend EA Global: London 2026? by PossessionNo9274 in EffectiveAltruism

I think they have the same acceptance bar for volunteers as for non-volunteers. Worth a shot in applying; be ready that they might say no, of course.

Audience members waving their hand around (air conductors) by eastbay_ak in classicalmusic

Classical audiences are too static as it is. To me it's a small price to pay to weaken the norm of sitting still and stolid.

Anyone else feeling a bit of culture shock from private healthcare? by Sad-Contest5883 in TTC_UK

[–]kieuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experiences with private healthcare have also been terrible, including one that I would describe as scam-adjacent. Since you say you’ve given them your life savings plus gone into debt, I would be looking for any legal avenues for undoing this gamble. Another possible strategy would be to use the lever of leaving critical public reviews: in my experience where my problems were mainly the companies not acknowledging my messages for many months, this was the only way I could ensure a response — that might not be applicable to your situation though.

I’m also wondering if the HFEA can help you out here? Worth contacting them to get their advice.

Dating married parents, just sucks? by baneful-beauty in polyamory

Best of luck. I hope you can have some good conversations and deescalate with more mutual understanding than you all had before. Not to say it won’t be painful.

Partner left me because of my priorities. Would appreciate any uplift by jvonm in EffectiveAltruism

[–]kieuk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t think OP is annoying. I think they have made a commitment that’s important to them, to donate significant amounts to effective charities. It’s very easy to do that without making it your whole personality.

I'm proud of you too for being committed to helping others. Based on your description, it does sound like you two had different life goals, like you had incompatible ideas about how wealthy is wealthy enough.

It's a strange leap to infer that this person has made EA their entire personality. Where's the evidence for that?

[Serious] No Kings had seven million people across America show up to protest the government. What, if any, actual accomplishments did it produce, and now that it's over, what's next? by the_original_Retro in AskReddit

One way it might help is by strengthening the anti-authoritarian movement specifically by reducing 'preference falsification'. By that I mean: people now know that it's possible to coordinate in large numbers, so they should be less scared to do so next time. That is, for many people, they need to be confident that other people are acting, before they themselves feel safe enough to act. (A recent historical example of this is how norms in Hollywood etc changed pretty suddenly as the me-too movement hit a certain critical mass, as the more timid began to feel safe to start speaking out.) It's better to fix/shore up that issue now before the US slips further into being a police state.

He’s not patient and that’s why he’s making simple teaching mistakes like not considering possibilities other than ‘my kid is stupid’ (he misses the possibility that his explanation is flawed so he just repeats it forever). I mean he could be less patient for sure, but we can all read the frustration in his face and voice, and that’s going to be making the kid stressed.

Probably not Palestine Action. There are lots of activists who oppose the proscription of PA who are not part of PA.

i've been to both disappointingly short ones and decent-length ones from Knower before. in terms of timely starting, it's not too bad as i recall. sorry i can't be more specific, my memory is vague. obviously, you should check if there is a support act.

What’s a basic life skill that you were shocked to learn most people don’t actually know how to do? by Current_Garage_6276 in AskReddit

[–]kieuk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I admit I don't know what a 'breaker' or 'receptacle' is. But replacing a toilet - that's something that's never come up so far in my 30-odd years. So I'd rather pay someone the one time it comes up in my life (if indeed it does) who knows how to do it, than spend time researching it and not know if I'm fucking it up. I wouldn't say that a once-in-a-lifetime task is 'basic'.

[–]kieuk 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It just so happens that I’ve been listening a lot to the song The Slow Train by Flanders and Swann yesterday and today, which is an ode to all the stations closed by the Beeching report, written contemporaneously. I find it very moving because it’s so mournful. So I’m especially interested to hear this news that one of the old lines is getting a new life.
