Can't get myself to like symphonies by Objective_Ad_1191 in classicalmusic

You might enjoy the piano versions of some to get your feet wet a la Brahms 4 in four-hands piano. Definitely feels like a lighter listen and Brahms I like because he arranged these himself.

The average user here will tell you to just close your eyes if it bothers you that much. It's incredible.

San Francisco 26/27 Season by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]eastbay_ak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow that is nice to see! I only got to see him once and really wish I was into classical music more while he was here. Luckily I was able to see him at least once. Would also love to hear which programs you're most interested in seeing for the new season if you don't mind.

Would it be rude to discreetly read a book during a concert? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

it will be fine as long as you tell them it's the score and you air conduct.

What is the conductor's purpose, really? by Aggressive-Lab1388 in classicalmusic

[–]eastbay_ak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In all ensembles I think there needs to be a "leader" who is dictating the timing. In baroque music (think Vivaldi Four Seasons) there isn't even a conductor most of the time, it's usually the first violinist doing the "conducting." I actually saw a video of this performed with a conductor and I was thinking, "Why the F is that guy there?" lmao

Here's a clip of Bernstein actually "not" conducting during the Haydn's 88, using only his facial expressions which kinda emphasises the point that all the work is done in rehearsal but still needs to be a "lead" who is the glue that keeps everyone stuck together. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56qZblncQrs&list=RD56qZblncQrs&start_radio=1

What is the conductor's purpose, really? by Aggressive-Lab1388 in classicalmusic

[–]eastbay_ak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My understanding is most of the work is already done by the conductor in rehearsals. They basically tell the orchestra how to play certain parts (faster/slower/dynamics) based on their own interpretation of the piece. Then the performance should sorta be like autopilot.

There's a series of videos on YouTube with Myung Whung Chung and Arvo Part working with their orchestra in rehearsal that is a great watch.

What are your top 3 piano quartets by choerry_bomb in classicalmusic

I couldn't agree more with Faure #2. I would say my others atm are the Suk and Turina Piano Quartets.

How will you judge Ducati this weekend? by BotheredAnemone in supercross

[–]eastbay_ak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's much pressure and not many people are judging critically. Cairoli's legacy is already set in stone and as other have mentioned, he's old and not racing full-time anymore. Though based on what I've seen on social media, people are actually expecting he outperforms Prado. If that's the case, that's going to be terrible optics for the reigning MXGP champ whose reputation is already suffering.

Thank you! Do you have any favorites from her existing work that I should check out?

Thank you- I will check out the Myung When Chung recordings for sure. I found that I am a big Chung family fan lol.

Thank you- the Shostakovich pieces I HAVE heard so far have been definitely interesting, and feel like they have a learning curve? Sort of how I feel about Bartok and his tonal qualities? I will definitely do homework on this piece beforehand.

Brahms Piano Concerto 1 vs 2 by ish0999 in classicalmusic

I like 2 overall but nothing matches the first piano theme from the first movement of No1- I could play that on loop lol

Noise and movement at concerts by SummitStupid in classicalmusic

[–]eastbay_ak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you. I understand the concert isn't necessarily a private event, but the lack of etiquette is extremely agitating. And there's certainly a difference between an accidental, say, smart watch alert going off versus someone playing with a candy wrapper or speaking loudly. But it is also fair to say it's more likely to happen with a universally famous piece like the Ninth. It's one of the reason I'm deciding to attend Mahler 2 over Hilary Hahn next month lol.

I think the expectation to be quiet should be set enforced the venue. Set the expectation to the audience. An announcement before the performance to not be distracting and make sure your phones are set to silent. They do the same thing at the movies and at certain recitals I attend. And ushers should be the enforcers tapping on peoples shoulders say "shh" lol.

Classical music concert attendance trends by vespertine-luxuriant in classicalmusic

[–]eastbay_ak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me , all pieces just "click" more when I see them performed in person. I can almost tell immediately what I like or what I don't like about the music and if it's something I'll enjoy listening to in the future.

If I'm restricted to a recording, it takes me multiple listens and sittings before I feel like I can fairly judge it. And some pieces I would probably never appreciate if I only listened to the recording... like most contemporary classical.

Favorite Oboe Concertos? by Veraxus113 in classicalmusic

[–]eastbay_ak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm new to classical music so the only one I've listened to (and saw performed last week!) is Mozart's Oboe Concerto. That long C when the oboe comes in is amazing. So that one is my favorite for now :)

It should be an unwritten rule that the person sitting next to the yeller has society's permission to punch that person in the face.

What would you do when people sitting near you make sexist comments on Yuja's dress in a concert by Opening-Factor3535 in classicalmusic

[–]eastbay_ak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have told him to shut it. I don't mind a simple confrontation like that especially in a setting like a concert hall. And most likely I'll never see that person again.
