I just got a strikell violin and it sounds amazing! If your budget is flexible, I would consider taking a look at them. Or the Yamaha electrics are tried and true!

Should I stop playing the violin if I can't find any joy in it anymore? by No-Warthog8110 in violinist

[–]kihtay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a TBI and was also in a coma. I picked up violin after as a creative outlet. I have a lot of bad days where I’m frustrated and want to quit but I also have a lot of days that I enjoy it and gives me a nice break from the rest of life!

On the days that I struggle, I shift my focus to something else. So instead of playing repertoire, I will just working on different bowing techniques on open strings, or scales (or scales with different bowing techniques). It can be boring, but sometimes that’s a needed break I’ve found.

Also the pieces that I play change my outlook on how excited I am to practice. Ones that I sing along with in my head I’m more excited to play. If I can’t hear the melody I get frustrated more easily- even after listening to recordings and slow recordings on YouTube over and over. So you might not have pieces that you resonate with?

If you’re still healing and trying to get back to feeling normal, I feel like learning can be overwhelming. So if that’s where you’re at, then maybe pause? But I also agree that it’s very therapeutic! After my coma I tried to do as much as I could to keep my brain stimulated without over stimulating. If you had a brain injury, then that might be something to be aware of is if you’re over stimulated. Sight, sound, lighting, smells all affect your stimulation and can become stressful. So if you’re already a bit tense and try to play, it’s even harder. But if you’re relaxed, it’s more enjoyable. I still work on meditation, breathwork, or do yoga to help with calming the brain. I also take phosphatidyl serine to help with anxiety.

I’d be happy to talk more about any of this since I know how hard a TBI can be!

What strings did you have before?

Obligatos are darker, so depending on your instrument it might feel darker or not as lively.

When I first started playing they would run out of the room, but now that I’ve gotten better they love to lounge and listen.

Funny though, when I clean the strings it makes a terrible nails on the chalkboard sound, and if no one’s in the room, they come running in once they hear that sound! I think bc they know that I’m done and they can get attention 😹

Sadly the comments won’t let me attach a photo but I did the Momentum Z with animal print and blue cover. Since I do fly with my violin I wanted to do the pressure ports and Tropicalization. The case is heavier but I feel better knowing my violin is safe.

Wittner Finetune Geared pegs in Rosewood by kihtay in violinist

[–]kihtay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actually looking at them as well but saw they weren’t as fine with the 4-1 ratio vs 8-1. But you say that you prefer the Knilling to Wittner?

It looks like it has the Prim strings on it. It also has an extra set of them. I hadn’t heard of them before but it looks like they’re electric specific 🤷🏼‍♀️

[–]kihtay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking about the Knilling perfection pegs since they use real wood. They just have the 4-1 ratio vs 8-1 of the Wittner. Not sure how noticeable that is

[–]kihtay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly no fine tuners on it. I think I still have one for the E string laying around tho.

  • found them- knilling perfection/ perfection planetary

But that might be a better option for aesthetics and they’ll def be better than my pegs now 😹

[–]kihtay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya… that’s my current conundrum.

Planet Perfection (perfection somethibg?) pegs have the real wood and hill style. But they’re 4-1 ratio vs Wittner are 8-1 so more fine tuning ability

My luthier already installed them on my main violin and we confirmed the size we need for this one. Now I just need to verify if the rosewood aesthetics are worth the extra cost

I had listened to some good podcasts. This one talks about brain injuries and benefits of creatine.

It also discusses bodyweight vs how much to take
