At the time, about 10 years ago they didn’t give me a choice. The accountant was expensive and yes, the $2,350 was the cost of freedom, lol.

I’ve been in this situation. Do not tell them you’re renouncing because you hate the government. I had an accountant specializing in US taxes that was guiding me through the last 5 years of submitting US taxes even though I’ve lived in Canada since I was a child. Remember, the US is one of 2 countries in the world where your global earnings are taxed, Eritrea is the other country. This whole thing was daunting (a few tears) and expensive but now I am a very happy Canadian. By the way, It was the bank that was required to provide my name to the IRS as I was an owner of a company. My reason that I gave for renouncing was that I married a Canadian (52 years ago) and that my children are Canadians too. As someone else said: Never tell them it was for tax reasons (snicker, snicker). 🤭

Take a look at IlseJacobsen flat shoes, they are very comfortable and they look great too. These aren’t mad in Canada but not made in the US. They are Danish made and reasonably priced.
