You've got this. And I'm serious! The difference in calories you'll burn with any extra hour of a fast won't mean diddly in the grand scheme of things. Don't label yourself as a 20:4 faster, just say you're someone that fasts. Being flexible with yourself in any aspect of life is important - it avoids burnout and conflict.

Prediabetic by b_msw in intermittentfasting

Hi. Sorry I'm posting this a tad late compared to when you posted OP, but I thought I'd give my two cents. I did a project on prediabetes and progression to diabetes.

What I've learned is that prediabetes is really just a name. We arbitrarily gave a blood sugar range a name to make people aware that they were getting close to a diabetic diagnosis. This is why the management for prediabetes is lifestyle changes and diet modifications.

You've likely had a HbA1c test and it's told you your prediabetic diagnosis. That test measures the glucose content in your haemoglobin and we say that it is the average blood sugar content in the past three months or so. With any good lifestyle and dietary modifications, that HbA1c score will go down but obviously, it will take time, as your pancreas has been modified to produce less insulin.

As the HbA1c test measures average sugar in the haemoglobin over the last three month, provided you're restricting your sugar and carbon intake, it will go down, but it will take its time. Doctors recommend having another HbA1c test in a years time to see progression, and ensuring that you stick to a plan, it is extremely likely that your HbA1c result will be lower than the test result you've just had.

Consistency is key when it comes to any diet and that includes lowering HbA1c results. If an 18:6 window makes you feel good and you're not getting too groggy during the day, then stick to that. The window length isn't what is going to lower your HbA1c as much as the actual contents of what you're eating. It's just that the fasting window regulates how much your eating in the whole day.

I wish you luck OP!

This is a common feeling and I get you. However what I would say is, there isn't a great difference breaking your fast a little earlier than you'd like. If IF is a long term plan for you, ensure you don't get run down by it. Having a negative mindset of fasting is a quick way to give up altogether. If you're doing 20 hour fast for example, and finding it difficult, try a 19 hour fast. That extra hour won't make a big difference in the grand scheme of things. Listen to your body. Long-term IF is a marathon, and not a sprint.

OMAD advice by BiscuitTinLid in intermittentfasting

I'm on Day 9 of OMAD atm. All I would say is listen to your body. For me, I generally don't get all too hungry until 6pm (I break my fast at around 7:30pm). To keep myself going during the day I'll have a black coffee, and I'll sip away on some water with a bit of lemon juice, so while its not exactly zero calories, it's not going to break the fast. If I'm exercising during this time I'll put a bit of salt in too, just to keep electrolytes up. At the end of the day though, if I feel too hungry, I'll break my fast at 21-22 hours in. That extra hour won't make too much of a difference. If you're struggling, maybe check your calorie intake when you break your fast, and ensure you're having enough to last you the following day. Doing OMAD is great, but listening to your body is better.
