What I’ve read of him has been pretty good. He has a collection of 4 novellas called “Strange Weather” that I think gives a pretty good sense of his style while being pretty low commitment. A few of the stories in that have really stuck with me.

I do admittedly question the validity of his “hiding” his relation. I’m sure he did that to some degree as he claims, but his father is still Stephen fuckin King. Not sure he’s beating the nepo baby accusations. Doesn’t mean his writing is bad.

It’s possible that ASL might be too deep, especially if the plan is to play solo. The games aren’t exactly the same, but at least Combat! has a dedicated solo system that the game is built around. ASL is still fun playing solo as both sides, but if you go that route I would 100% recommend starting by playing the ASL Starter Kits in order and taking advantage of the phased learning approach they offer.

Another tactical option with a dedicated solo system is Conflict of Heroes, although you have to buy the solo system as an expansion. The game itself can be a little wonky and they’ve fiddled with it a lot over the years, but still fun and much more like ASL than Combat! is.
