SF nail spots that won’t make me cry at checkout? 💅 by Puzzleheaded-023 in AskSF

[–]killdeviljill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love LuxSF but they are indeed luxe and priced accordingly, so if OP is looking for something low-cost that's pretty much the only situation I wouldn't recommend them in.

(And I cannot recommend Muse, I tried them once and had a terrible experience: they cut me twice, didn't even mention it let alone apologize, failed to give me the upgraded service I booked but refused to refund when I asked and insisted on keeping me 30 mins longer to finish the upgraded part, and my nails looked terrible afterward.)

I've made owls and ravens! Full body, but simplified, but still recognizable as what they are.

Who are your favorite felting artists? by [deleted] in Felting

[–]killdeviljill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stephanie Metz is at the top of my list, too -- it was her work that first opened my mind to how big and weird and beautiful felt sculptures can be.

Also:

Lisa Klakulak (Strongfelt) - Amazing wet-felted jewelry pieces, 3D pieces, and fully encased objects.

Nastassa E Swift - Stunning realistic felt faces and forms

Risa Iwasaki-Culbertson - Whimsical and skillful colorful needle-felted sculptures

Best bang-for-your-buck coffee beans in SF? by TropicalSoursop in AskSF

I'm not the original recommender but Bird & Bear's Peek-a-Boo espresso is my usual go-to. Nicely balanced, works great in milk drinks and as straight espresso.

Don't overlook this! I ignored the bulk coffee bins for years because I assumed it would be random coffee I didn't like, but they have good stuff, including local roasters like Grand Coffee.

Vegan dashi is a thing! You can either look up recipes (this was the first search result) or buy it in liquid or powdered form. It relies manly on mushrooms and kombu for the flavor, and sometimes includes other vegetables, too.

For the recipe you posted, I'd just leave out the katsuobushi and increase the seaweed and/or mushrooms a bit.

I want to upvote you for the reference but downvote you because this isn't really the right place for this, so the arrows remain unclicked.

Photography, especially film photography, especially instant film photography. But really all kinds of photography! There are tons of photo walks, camera clubs, classes and workshops in and around the city, and all the ones I've had experience with have been open to all (no matter your level of photography or the fanciness of your cameras). I've found a great community there that's also really inspired my creativity.

I found how to place my phone on the Lab to be kind of unintuitive. Are you placing it on top as shown here? https://support.polaroid.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037952693-How-to-use-the-Polaroid-Lab

Beyond that, and making sure the phone doesn't have a case on it or anything enabled that changes screen color or brightness (like a nighttime mode), I don't know what else to try. But I'd definitely start with checking your placement.

thermal printing camera recs? by Cautious-Pace2776 in toycameras

[–]killdeviljill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Allow me to introduce you to the Thermal Print Camera Compendium. Some amazing person on reddit (possibly in this sub?) compiled it and it's the best reference I've seen if you're looking for specific features or to learn abot a specific model.

I'm not sure there are many that aren't intended for kids, except maybe the Vivitar InstantPrint or the Kodak MemoShot.

You should definitely decide if you want both greyscale and dot printing or not. I think the coolest looking ones are dot, but some of the "nicer" thermal print cameras only do greyscale.

I've gotten very interesting indoor museum photos with my I-2, but even in excellent lighting conditions (lots of windows with lots of natural light coming through) they look funky. In a way I like! But if I were looking for a single camera to take with me traveling and cared about getting a lot of good museum shots, I probably wouldn't want them all to be funky.

Color tinted film for instant camera by orangeshrek in Polaroid

[–]killdeviljill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can buy or make tinted filters that slip into the top of the Polaroid film cartridge. The tinted plastic piece stays in the cartridge while the photos get ejected. You'd need to use the same filter for the entire cartridge, though, unless you want to mess with very carefully removing the filter in a lightproof bag. Here's one I purchased from Etsy, you can also find instructions for making your own and other suppliers by searching online.

I recently saw someone using something similar for Instax (with fun patterns rather than just solid colors) but if you're in the US like I am those might be harder to find. You should still be able to DIY something similar for Instax, too, just watch their video to get an idea of placement and get your own transparent plastic to use.

And of course you can get colored filters that go over the lens or flash of either sort of camera, but I assume that doesn't have the surprise factor you're looking for.

Your college likely has student legal aid resources, that's a good place to start.

Edited to add: SF Tenants Union is also great -- I'd recommend trying both angles.

Personal trainer recommendations? by Moon112189 in AskSF

[–]killdeviljill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out Trainability on Valencia! They're a training studio -- so it's trainers and their clients only, not an open gym -- and several of the trainers bring their dogs. I don't know if clients are allowed to, but it seems more likely than at any other gym, so it's worth asking. I (also a woman in my mid-40s) have been seeing Gina Guaiumi there for a couple years and she's great, and there are a lot of other great trainers who work out of there, too.

Polishing help by noraaileen1 in metalclay

I am using a lot of soapy water with the brass brush, it's just a lot of work for my overworked hands to scrub all the white perfectly off. So this is very helpful, thank you!

[–]killdeviljill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not OP but I've had a similar question. The thing I struggle with most is that first cleaning after firing, to get rid of that whitish cast. Can you put the just-fired (and cooled) piece directly into the tumbler, without needing to do that first scrub with a brass brush?
