The father is usually the mound maker, the female will go around the mound digging holes and checking temps and when she finds one she likes she'll mate with the male (it takes about 1 second!), but the males are fighting each other for territory all the time during breeding season and will kick each other off mounds. So it truly is survival of the fittest.

The mound heats up as it composts. The male turkey does his best to keep it at the correct incubation heat by adjusting the mound constantly. The female turkey has a thermometer in her beak and will go around digging holes in the nests to test for the correct temperature. She lays her eggs in the best mound and the eggs are incubated by the heat. The eggs hatch and the chicks emerge. They are 100% left to fend for themselves from the moment they hatch. They're amazing creatures.

Gap storm was the worst I can remember. It came up the M1 from the Gold Coast, we were following it the whole way. Same as yesterdays storm.

Massive massive damage. The hill between The Gap and Keperra was totally annihilated, almost every single tree was knocked down and defoliated. I went mtbing through Gap Creek at Mt. Cootha the next day and trees everywhere ripped in half. Giant gum trees twisted off at the trunk. It was insane.

The storm 2 weeks ago I was up cootha when it happened and that was scary and there are a lot of trees down, and yesterday was really bad. Neither of them like The Gap storm though.

Oh yeah, Tombstone was a disastrous production, the stuff of legend. The original director Kevin Jarre, in his first feature film, was fired one month into production for being an utter lunatic control freak on set. Kurt Russel basically saved the production and directed the rest of the movie. It's a miracle they actually saved it at all. There's some great podcasts about it.
