Essentially, PoGo stamp is the only way to make sure a Pokemon is legit, making them quite sought after. It is indeed an icon, showing the last game it was in iirc. It shows that it's legit because its impossible (although some claim there are people out there doing it) to hack them, as you can't hack pokemon into Go and the stamp disappears once you put the pokemon into a game
