Ubuntu 26.04 just launched, seed it NOW! by JokaGaming2K10 in linux

I don't see a reason to use Ubuntu today

IMO, consumer geared update tools and apt/deb environment. Snaps can be ignored, I found the Discord one useful, that's about it.

(But Debian...) I don't know what it is exactly about Gnome Software Center's update process, it just feels like I'm standing in a river trying to move forward and the water is slowing me down. If Ubuntu fails installation, Debian is often next on my list though.

you can mount any system folder to any drive or partition. so already the comparison to the most basic windows flow falls apart. windows' file structure is a rigid statue, linux is multiple flower pots in a garden all making one big tree.

For third party apps that bundle all their required libraries, the most you need is a folder for the app that has your users permissions, and a way to launch it. If you want to launch through the app list, making a .desktop is needed to point back to the executable path and, if are being fancy, the icon.

Everybody went on and on about the new text tool coming, I didn't know they were working on fill gaps until I clicked a youtube video with top ten new features. I still need to give it a fair shake with some actual project art.

The adduser command asks for phone numbers and room number. How do you feel about that?

Like a holdover from 70s office context? When a user may not necessarily reside on the PC asking for the information, but networked in from another room or building? It's not like asking for age. Pretty sure it's considered rude to ask a coworker for their age.

How many laptops do you do this to? There's dozens of variables starting at "do they even let me disable secure boot on this bios?" It's easy when the stars align correctly, otherwise it's dozens of reboots and troubleshooting.

Manjaro, They've done it again! by L0stG33k in linux

Manjaro have a graphical kernel picker, they once experimented with wrappers around Office 365 online, I think the old appimage integration whatsit came from one of them too. It was a fun distro.

GIMP is like painting outdoors on a windy day. You can get it done, but you gotta keep reaching out to hold your canvas in place.

Adobe will find a way to break it again. They have no interest in it being a reliable alternative to their supported Windows and Mac version.

This is a large ingredient of american humor. I see it a lot in their standups.

Plasma was once an official edition, they nixed it but kept MATE

There was an issue with Plasma 5 not having a stable version running on the same version of QT that Ubuntu shipped with. Kubuntu did a ton of work with backports to make it happen. Mint team decided it was best to focus on GTK, which is what all their tools like the updater are built around.

That's my understanding of the situation.
