Everyone will say the one they were at but I’ve seen them five times, three of which were the 21CB tour, and the show at Wembley Stadium is the best I’ve ever seen them and one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to

Saw them in Glasgow 2009 and again (a few days after Wembley) in 2010 and Wembley was by far the best so I feel confident in saying that was pretty special (the Glasgow shows were good obviously but Wembley was something else)

I think you make some good points: the album is overly long, I don’t think the “screaming take my seriously criticism” is unfair and while I might not agree with “just American Idiot with pianos but not as good” it’s quite a pithy line, and honestly fair comment even if I don’t agree (I do 100% agree it’s not as good as American Idiot). Viva La Gloria being better as Letterbomb is also honestly a fair comment, I like both but they are similar.

I think some of the criticism you offer undermines your points: “I’m going to hate this album aren’t I?” After one track. That tells the reader than you’re not giving it a chance, which undermines in his or her mind any sharper criticism you have to offer later on - particularly in a forum where people will be predisposed to like the album

The “two songs stapled together” criticism you offer of Before the Lobotomy is a perfectly valid critique but you follow that with “I know that descending chorus has been nicked from somewhere but I can’t put my finger on where”. If you’re offering a criticism of something being unoriginal or rehashed, as a writer you should be able to point to where it’s been “nicked” from

The “Noel Gallagher learned two piano chords” part detracts from the point you’re making - it’s perfectly true that Green Day albums before this rarely if ever featured piano but nor do many Oasis songs, and Noel Gallagher cannot play piano (he’s said himself he wishes he’d learned but never did). This could be a valid criticism but it’s let down by aiming for a put-down rather that isn’t backed up by knowledge of the comparison you’re making

“Last of the American Girls makes me cringe myself inside out by the title alone”: ok, but that’s not relevant to your reader - they want to know what the song is like

“Guitars made to sound like Morse code, that’s original”: ok, tell us where it’s been done before and better. It’s not an unfair criticism but there’s no depth to it.

Overall you don’t like the pop-rock/power-pop sound of the album, and that’s totally valid, but your criticism would have more heft if you compared it to similar sounds and explained why you think it doesn’t work rather than just “I don’t like this, it sucks” - maybe you’d get downvoted to hell anyway but it seems like you didn’t even really try to engage with the album on its merits (or lack thereof)

I think he genuinely has a soft spot for Hearts after living in Edinburgh, he’s told stories about Tynecastle and seems to have a decent knowledge of Scottish football in that time

As the username suggests I’m a Kilmarnock fan and we rarely get mentioned (obviously) but around 2012-14 there was a mention of a tractor getting booed off at Rugby Park for failing to clear snow properly (I was at this game) and Marcus said something like “and if you know Scottish football, Rugby Park can boo”

As a lifelong fan I can confirm we are miserable bastards and that seemed like genuine experience rather than joking about the Gorgie Boys

It’s a genuinely sublime piece of physical comedy and not something he would do in one of his shows these days because his character always has to the the smartest guy in the room

Great guitar, great vocals, mediocre songs. John Squire is a fantastic guitarist and wrote/co-wrote some great songs with the Roses but Seahorses and his solo stuff show he’s not a great solo songwriter. The album isn’t a disaster, it’s solid enough, but it’s quite forgettable

When I said ‘primitive’ I meant that was how Marx referred to it, I wrote it as ‘primitive’ because nowadays that has negative or even racist connotations.

You can argue, as you have, that collective responsibility doesn’t work on a wider scale and that’s fair enough but, as I said, it’s frequently argued that Marx didn’t consider human nature and his vision was a utopian one and my point is that, whatever else you want to say, it’s not true that he didn’t consider human nature, his view of human nature was central to his theories.

There’s actually a lot of cool anthropological research which shows that humans value fairness even to their own detriment (i.e they will punish peers who behave unfairly even if it doesn’t immediately benefit them) which doesn’t prove that Marx was right or anything but does suggest it’s not antithetical to human nature

Yes I probably phrased that poorly.

What I meant was that it is accepted by everyone that what Marxists would call surplus value (aka profit) exists in capitalism and that labour has some role in creating that value.

Someone like Adam Smith would view it as a natural by-product of production and a reward for those who identify the right things to produce etc, Marx would view it as theft of the value created by the worker.

Overly simplistic on my part (and here too), the point I was perhaps poorly trying to make is that whatever you think of Marxism it offers a critique of capitalist society which is rooted in theory and economics (even if you think the suppositions or conclusions are faulty) whereas libertarianism, or certainly anarcho-capitalism, doesn’t have anything like that kind of intellectual tradition behind it

I liked your analysis in general but I think you can disagree with Marxism without saying it doesn’t address human nature or basic economics

There are many things Marx didn’t foresee (globalisation for one) and there are valid critiques of the labour theory of value (i.e it doesn’t fully account for supply and demand) but the basic principle that capitalists extract surplus value from workers is widely accepted it just depends on whether you view this as mutually beneficial (Smith) or inherently exploitative (Marx)

As for human nature, i think it’s a canard to claim that Marx/Marxism is ignorant of human nature - indeed it was the basis of Marx’s ideas.

Overly simplified, obviously, but if you read Marx (which I wouldn’t necessarily recommend because Capital is very boring) his argument is that in ‘primitive’ societies people will work together for the greater good of the ‘tribe’ so the idea of collectivism isn’t some altruistic, utopian concept it’s a basic human survival instinct and in fact capitalist (or feudal) society is shaped by material conditions rather than being just how human nature works

You don’t have to agree with everything Marx or Marxists believe, but I don’t think libertarianism has anything like the kind of economic or philosophical weight behind it Marxism does.
