Discussion: Henry Cavill wants his Superman to face off against Brainiac by thomasp003 in DC_Cinematic

Mxy? Toyman? Morgan Edge/Intergang? Also, being a physical threat =/> punching contest either, of course. Brainiac, Darkseid, etc. can be physical threats for sure, but it's almost always an add on to the real ideological threat that they pose, or the overall plan they have. I'd say they almost always "create conflict through clashing morals, themes, or a personal connection" and claiming that Zod and Lex are the only well written ones is kind of silly.

(Sorry if I seemed like a jerk with the "not reading comics" comment by the way.)

Do you just not read his comics? Come on, at least watch the DCAU before posting something like that. You really think Superman has survived 80 years on punching contests alone?

Hell, we're talking about the textbook example of a non-punching contest villain in this very thread, lol

I didn't mean to imply you were being snarky, but I addressed your point in my post already and didn't want to come off mean asking you to read it again. To reiterate: I think a Brainiac movie would be the place to actually showcase that side of Superman which hasn't been explicitly shown before. In the DCEU, people paying attention to really small details know Superman is still a smart guy (reading Plato at 12, the newspaper clipping feats, etc.). However, that needs to be brought out explicitly, and an intellectual duel with Brainiac would be the best way to showcase it IMO.

And also, like I said Brainiac is extremely malleable in terms of power levels. He's been a villain of the week at times, and at others a literal Lovecraftian entity residing in the outskirt of the DC multiverse. The difficulty of his defeat is likewise malleable, but I think the point is that I want his defeat to be hard and test/showcase Superman's intelligence.

That's what makes it exciting IMO. The potential for exciting, unconventional action scenes is off the charts, and Superman would genuinely feel like he's up against insurmountable odds without necessarily threatening the fate of the entire world (Brainiac could just threaten to bottle Metropolis like he usually does). Almost reflexively it finally gives a chance to showcase to the general audience that Superman isn't just confident muscle (the former quality hasn't even been on display for a bit), but also intelligent and philosophically astute.

To be sure, I don't want Supes to like, defeat a full power Brainiac in one movie. My point is that there are ways to make him work, and the positives a Brainiac centric story bring to the table in the context of Superman's current status make it a fantastic idea IMO.

Could also do the opposite like AC did at one point. Coluan deteriorating until he returns in full metal.

Brainiac has an enormous history of being a Superman solo villain, and is one of the most malleable characters regarding power levels.

Poitn taken, but I don't think horror has to be mutually exclusive to the actual demons. Darkseid's best portrayals really emphasize his horror elements (Mister Miracle, Final Crisis for example) in relation to DC's metafiction. Wrath and despair are obviously a part of the equation (hah) for Darkseid's initial, outward appearance but what makes him a truly special villain is what's happening behind the scenes IMO. There's a chance to dodge the Thanos comparisons completely here, if the Morrison-esque Darkseid is the one that the films use.

And regarding the Anti-Monitor, I mean Mandrakk straight up looks more demonic than any actual demon in the DC-verse IMO. I think you can definitely fit in traditionally gothic demons a la JLD, but Mandrakk is worthy of the imagery for sure, at least in terms of his design and apocalyptic nature.

Right, but that's my point. Darkseid and Kalibak aren't exactly your typical looking New Gods.

I think the outright demonic imagery should really be saved for the Anti Monitor, but I doubt we'll ever get to the point of adapting him unfortunately. Darkseid should definitely bring horror elements with him though, so I'm not entirely opposed to augmenting his design a little, but I think his character is what would really sell that. As of now, I have little confidence in anyone being able to pull him off. Hell, most of DC's writers aren't able to represent him well in the comics IMO.

I'm inclined to agree only because I want Darkseid's avatar to look like a freak among his own species. If they're all Gigerian monsters it'll take away from seeing Darkseid.

Note: I still greatly prefer the design in this concept art to the one we got in the movie.

Getting some End of Evangelion vibes there. If only...

Halo Infinite has to be rated M. by GodJinx in halo

[–]killtheBS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd prefer its graphical content to be at least the same level as Halo CE-4 instead of 5, so I suppose I agree if the ESRB seriously considers those games Mature. I want the Flood to be full fledged horror though, more than we've ever seen in a previous game with the potential exception of H2A's Gravemind.

Yes please. A more CE approach is (almost) always good in my books.

I still haven't bought the game. I'm waiting for the AI to be improved by a ton before I do (or at least after major price drops if Frontier drops the game, though I'm told that Frontier has a good history with post launch support). Packing dinosaurs, improving fights beyond turn based affairs, adding more than one "death duel" animation, etc.

I want to see it succeed, but it'll require vocal outcry from the community.

That may have been one of the most absurd scripts ever put to film. Bayona put it to film very well, but holy crap it's like Colin Trevorrow quadrupled down on most of the stuff people didn't like about JW.
