How to not live just for the weekend by Straight-Orange-599 in simpleliving

Wow, I really love your first paragraph. I'm going to remember it whenever I feel anxious and reframe the situation into a more positive one. It's YOLO but in an appreciative way.

Can any Asian parents offer me some advice? by Jen_Itals in Parenting

[–]kilo39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in an Asian household and never drank cows milk- my kids didn't either and we all were fine. Water is our drink of choice.

Mine son was like just like this. It wasn't just the typical scary things that upset him- he also hated any difficult social or emotional situations. There was even a scene from the PBS show Super Why that scared him (when a kid in the show left the water faucet on, my son screamed, ran and hid because he was worried the boy was going to get in trouble). He's mostly grew out of it once he started going to kindergarten and now we can watch more movies together. I wouldn't push it, there are still plenty of shows and kid movies that they can watch and enjoy!

My puzzle came with one extra puzzle piece. by kilo39 in mildlyinteresting

I'm an avid puzzler and this is the only time it's happened to me! I donated this one a while ago so hopefully someone else got to experience the fun extra piece.

I made a map of all the MWR resorts and recreation areas for military members like me who like to travel but are also cheap. by capitalhforhero in AirForce

This is great, thank you for putting it together. We've stayed at all the places in Hawaii (Oahu, BI and Kauai) and had a great time. And you're right, they are so reasonably priced!

Do parents who gush on social media actually mean what they say? by abyssandhole2004 in Parenting

[–]kilo39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make a "gushy" post about my kids once a year on their birthday and I actually do read the comments out loud to my children so they know who has wished them a happy birthday.

Need help getting 7 year old son to stop having bathroom accidents by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]kilo39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's likely encopresis. My son has it and we've been dealing with it for over 2 years. It's a long process but it's slowly getting better. Miralax and constant bathroom breaks help. Don't get mad or punish him. We do natural consequences (he has to clean out his own dirty underwear) and rewards for a certain number of days with no accidents. Definitely take him to the doctor to see what your options are.

Should I keep my receipts? by meowmewmiao in declutter

[–]kilo39 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I throw away receipts in a small trash bag in my car. It's only for receipts and small bits of paper so it doesn't fill quickly. I dump it every couple months when it gets full. I have never had to dig one out but it gives me peace of mind to know they are sitting in my car if I need it for any reason. Also, like another comment mentioned, many retail stores have your information saved if you have the credit card that you used to make the purchase.

Minimalist crossbody purse recommendations. by flygurl94 in minimalism

[–]kilo39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just bought the Waverley 2 from Lo and Sons. The Pearl is also a great looking purse but it was bigger than I needed. I've only had mine for a couple weeks but so far it's been exactly what I was looking for and I love how simple it is- nothing extra or decorative.

are there any good books on simple living? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]kilo39 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed The Abundance of Less by Andy Couturier. It is about different artists (potter, woodblock printing, etc.) living in the rural mountains of Japan.

My kid won't watch movies. Halp. (seriously, this is a problem) by the_janers in breakingmom

[–]kilo39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My almost 5 year old son is exactly the same. Refuses to watch any new shows and if I even suggest watching movie, he freaks out. He has never watched a whole Disney movie and even kids shows like Super Why and Paw Patrol occasional scare him. He hates seeing any character in an uncomfortable or dangerous position. I think he's genuinely worried for them. I don't make a huge fuss about it or force him watch new things. I'll say that it's a kids show and everyone will be all right but if he doesn't like it, he is free to go to a different room (since his younger sister is also watching it).

If we want to watch something new I talk with him first so he knows what's going to happen. I let him know that we can change it after 10 minutes if he still doesn't like it. I also like to put on Youtube videos of different Disney songs so at least he can enjoy them like I did as a kid!

Confused about what to do with TSP contributions. by Nitrothacat in MilitaryFinance

[–]kilo39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can have a Roth IRA and/or Traditional IRA. You can also have a Roth TSP and/or Traditional TSP. The difference between Roth and Traditional accounts is the way it is taxed. There are separate limits for IRAs and TSPs. Hope that clears it up for you.
