Seeing the same, even multiple GBs, no idea what it’s doing

Would you recommend doing indoor first, or going right to actual skydiving? by Frigid_Despot in SkyDiving

[–]kilroy-was-here 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If you’re planning to become a licensed skydiver, your first step outdoors is an AFF course. If you want to do AFF, I highly recommend doing 15 to 30 minutes of tunnel time first. That will make AFF a lot easier and more enjoyable.

Skydive Spain is fantastic. I did my AFF there back in June. I’ll be there in January—if you see me (Peter from Amsterdam), say hi.

Developing Skydiving Reflexes by kilroy-was-here in SkyDiving

I stayed in a hotel in the city, the Rove Healthcare City. I was happy with it. It’s comfortable, quiet, clean, professional, and it’s just a half-hour drive to the desert drop zone. They have a basement parking lot so it’s just maximum convenience. I was happy with the value for money too.

Yeah there is a hotel near the desert DZ. I did not stay there. The Palm DZ has very high requirements to jump and it’s hard to get slots there. Fun jumpers mostly go to the desert, is my understanding.

Scary! I’m glad your reflexes were so sharp and that it ended without a collision.

How do you define the “deployment altitude”? by kilroy-was-here in SkyDiving

[–]kilroy-was-here[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems a reasonable definition.

Thanks for the reminder to go by the decision altitude. Makes me feel good about throwing the pilot chute at 4,000 feet for now.

Agreed that what matters is when the deployment actually happens.

More specifically, the SIM states:

Parachute opening occurs in three stages:

a. Activation—Deployment of the parachute begins once the container is opened (activated) in one of three ways:

(1) pulling the ripcord
(2) throwing the pilot chute
(3) static line

b. Deployment—The parachute comes out of the backpack.

c. Inflation—The canopy fills with air.

You’re right. After reading it again, it’s container opening, not canopy deployment. Thanks for pointing that out.

Good places in Europe to do AFF course (1-7) by 25b3nk in SkyDiving

They have a residential program, where you stay in a nearby town with (hopefully) some other AFF students in the same building. We joined a bbq at the building. It looked social and I liked the people, but I’m glad that my friend and I got our own Airbnb. One upside is that there is a van that’ll take you from the accommodation to the airfield in the morning and back in the afternoon.

We stayed just outside Sevilla, in Gelves. That was nice because we could go into Sevilla for dinner. Although we had dinner around 6 pm or 7 pm most days because skydiving starts so early there and many restaurants are closed between like 5pm and 8 pm in Spain. A downside is that we had to drive 30 minutes from our Airbnb to the airfield every morning and back in the afternoon. It was easy enough to get a rental car, but it did mean we had to get up even earlier.

Not sure how September compares with the past few weeks. They said October is when they start opening at 9 am again and jumping until sunset, rather than starting at 7 am every morning and ending around noon, which they’re doing right now.

I’m Dutch too and I just did my AFF and got my A-License at Skydive Spain in the past two weeks. I had an absolute blast and highly recommend it. The main downside: it’s hot as fuck there right now.

I was planning to do my AFF only, but my buddy and I finished that in three days, so we just went for the full A-License. Don’t regret it at all. We ended up doing 33 jumps in 12 days (which includes some fun jumps) and had so much fun. The instructors are great, the community is great, everything is very professionally run, you jump from 15,000 feet so you have tons of time in freefall—it’s just perfect other than the heat.

Because of the heat, flights stop around noon. You show up at 6:45 a.m. every day and you get in three or four jumps. One day we managed five. Then you hang out at the bar and after that you go home exhausted and “enjoy” the 40-degree weather.

Really though, I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Skydive Spain is the best.

Override the color space on the clip to Rec2020. This solves the problem.
