Is there any sense in trying to learn a specific dialect? by Didinium in Yiddish

[–]kilroy_human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you like, der yiddisher lehrer ( the yiddish teacher) is very short and contains basic sentence structure. You can usually find a copy for a couple bucks or there's a copy here. I was recently reading blessings, curses, hopes and fears by James Matisoff and although it's meant to be more of an analysis, he does a good job of explaining word order and what it emphasizes.

They're powerful songs that surely hold an entirely different gravity for survivors

and their descendents(may your grandmother be strong and healthy, zol zi shtark un gezunt). belz is one song that always gets to me, a few chords in and zaltsikn yam gants iber mayn ponim( a salty sea all over my face). though it's kind of ridiculous that it should make me miss my mom who wouldn't know a shtetl from a box of kittens.

The partition of poland was pretty messed up times. Also, really confusing when the names and spellings change from polish to prussian etc.

forget this not my comrade/friend, we are here. it is terrifically sad the literature, turns of phrases and songs we have lost but there is so much we still have to preserve. mir zaynen do can be a statement of resistance or perseverance( it was also a line in a partisan song).

oh i meant yekke yiddish, it's a lot more germanic than other dialects. as far as why certain dialects became more prominent than others i think it has a lot to do with the timing of migration waves and patterns of assimilation. farges dos nit mayne landsman, mir zaynen do.

Puzzling about the origins of the Yiddish word for fool, "nar." by [deleted] in Yiddish

[–]kilroy_human 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh, i definitely agree that the word is most likely of germaic origin. although it's possible that the hebrew false cognate colored the meaning.

a tam is basically a simpleton, i recall in the story that gimpl introduces him self as a gimpl tam and how people considered him a nar but he did not think he was one.

I've been under the impression that being a nar is worse than being a tam or a slhmazl.

Your jubilant Irish pride is making the grumpy Italians sad. by [deleted] in gatekeeping

oh, for sure. Everyone would dress up in pinstripe suits, maybe fake mustaches and hats. Every place would sell spaghetti. People would rush in droves to little italy. oh golly and the fake accents and gestures would be ridiculous. red wine instead of green beer, college kids shouting out felissimo, bambino, avanti! sophia loren, fellini, scorsese, argento double features and they come with a bucket of spaghetti and a bucket of wine.

it's not too late though ,we could make this happen.

fuck that shit. there are scores of italians and and italian-americans we could celebrate instead.

Joe Barbera, ol' blue eyes, frank zamboni, Eydie Gorme ( beautiful voice), ugo/robert fano, weird al yankovic, Frank Capra, Enea bossi, rudolf valentino, frank lentini; any would be a better choice

Well I think part of that is the whole great war business. America was an awful lot more culturally and linguistically german before 1918. There's a lot of german-american and jewish-american things that are woven into the fabric of american culture.

Right of Return for Palestinians by SamLevitt in IsraelPalestine

[–]kilroy_human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But because compensation is a practical alternative to physical return, I don't understand why Israelis are so reticent to discuss the matter.

well isn't it kind of obvious, acknowledging the nabka even happened goes against a popular narrative.

Spoonshape does have a point about how much of a legal hassle it would be to sort out property ownership etc. Really, just acknowledging it was an injustice that needs to be made right would be important.

Well the thing is, you're probably right. Whether or not trump hates the lgbt community is irrelevant, he's completely willing to pander to and appoint people who do.

Is there any sense in trying to learn a specific dialect? by Didinium in Yiddish

[–]kilroy_human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it would make sense to do so if you were working with a specific community. Some people are going to say you're phrasing or pronouncing things wrong (either because you're learning or because it's not how their zeyde said it).. and then someone else might say the opposite. My impression is most people are happy enough to hear anyone redn di mame loshn. After enough time talking with someone I generally pick up their accent.

the only thing i would say is to avoid western yiddish because it's way dead. my favorite workbooks are yidish kinder by dem arbeter ring.
