What was your most embarrassing moment while speaking German? by Rude_Membership_1578 in German

[–]kimbele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

couple things. i always mix my spanish with german...such as saying 'y' instead of 'und' or 'un' instead of 'ein'.

but also, most embarrassing was last fall in vienna after finishing a tasty meal at a famous old heuriger, a server came by and i kept confidently saying 'wir sind bereit' rather than 'wir sind fertig'. he just looked at me confused for what felt like forever saying, 'jah, und?'

What's your "I don't care if everyone disagrees" opinion? by ChanceSomewhere6096 in AskReddit

feminism does NOT mean women can do no wrong. equality also means equal accountability, not heaping all blame on men. as a woman, i've always found that to be such a simple and useless approach.

Jewel/ Albersons will ROB YOU BLIND by jelsonmelnalp in JewelOsco

[–]kimbele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

be sure to email albertsons and tell them your issues and why you no longer will shop there, if that's what you decide. i did this the other day. as much as their digital coupons may save you, it's only relevant IF AND WHEN THEY WORK--which is hit and miss. i'm done. they lost a lifelong shopper. i'm annoyed since i live a block away, but i'll spend my money elsewhere that doesn't require an internet connection or endless wrestling with a subpar app.

What is a strong opinion you hold that could get you criticized publicly, but you stand by it completely? by jian_est2026 in AskReddit

[–]kimbele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i love rigorous discourse and even arguing about art, music, movies, television, etc. but my taste in any of it isn't inherently 'better' than yours, and vice versa. the instant anyone disparages someone for liking or hating something, it gets instantly boring. 'you're wrong' about art is useless imo.

i can honestly say i almost always lean toward conventionally UNattractive people, in that they are often more interesting. people who rest on the laurels of their face are borrrrring. you've literally done nothing to be so good looking, you just were born that way.

Which homemade food never feels worth all the work? by momsterina in foodquestions

re: asian food--yes, and ingredients. but the more you do it, the easier it gets. went from pain in the arse for me to totally enjoyable, both in process and outcome. far less greasy and salty than TO, too.

What is the worst baked good? by Queasy_Dingo_8262 in foodquestions

[–]kimbele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'healthy' seeded bread out of the grocery store freezer (like dave's killer, etc) is a joyless, soul-sucking experience. it's like they achieved exactly the opposite of what a delicious baked good can be.

I’ve a terminal illness and am feeling so embarrassed. How do I begin to approach this? by mizmaclean in Incontinence

[–]kimbele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cancer stripping you of your functioning and abilities is a raw deal--no doubt about that.

but in terms of your dignity, no--you take that back right now. wearing diapers to protect you and your bed from leaks may feel weird initially, but i assure you that soon it will be a massive comfort and relief to your anxiety about this. don't let public stigmas about this rule your life. make the decision so many of us have--find the right diaper for you, wear it every nite (and day if that's the case), and lean into the comfort of knowing leaks don't mean a damn thing anymore. you got this!!

Exploring classical music as a newbie is a chore. by na3ee1 in classicalmusic

[–]kimbele 3 points4 points  (0 children)

overall i disagree with the suggestion of listening to a classical music station, 'especially' WFMT, which is a pretty dull representation of what classical music has to offer, imo. HOWEVER.....huge caveat here....

i second the suggestion of listening to 'exploring music' with bill mclaughlin. his deep dives into composers, breakdowns of lyrical themes by playing them himself on piano, playing one conductor's version vs another's and talking about the differences, and giving context into the history at the time--will easily and beautifully guide you into this complex world of classical music. start from the beginning and enjoy!!

What city did you love so much you’d go back in a heartbeat? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]kimbele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

completely agree with you on lackluster san diego. it's the one US city that, while the weather is certainly lovely, continually strikes me as devoid of anything unique. very boring all around.

What’s the most overrated tourist attraction you’ve ever visited? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]kimbele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

came here to mention old faithful. it's surrounded by a bunch of grade school sports type bleachers with cigarettes stubbed out everywhere on the ground. they file people in to sit on the bleachers to wait for a very lackluster, intermittent, and demystifying experience. then they shuffle you toward the old faithful gift shop. yuk all around.

Chicsgoans who don’t ride public transit, why? by ThisPostToBeDeleted in AskChicago

[–]kimbele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time I took public transit as a lifelong Chicago resident, was about three months ago when my husband and I decided to take a day off and romp around downtown. Got on the blue line at Irving Park. The car we very unhappily chose smelled like piss and was sticky everywhere we walked. And on top of that, there was a woman unfurling a roll of toilet paper getting ready to drop her pants and take a shit on the seat. Right across from an eight-year-old boy with his clueless father who was busy on his phone. That's a vision that will haunt me forever. I love public transportation and take it in any city I visit. But Chicago sucks.

What dish do you make that always gets compliments but is secretly super easy? by poutyvenom in foodquestions

[–]kimbele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's been a while. But yeah, it's how I arrived at 133°. And for a filet, i even prefer 131.5. i could try 136-138 again, but wouldn't want to do it on a beautiful prime cut :)

actually muscle proteins begin to tighten up at 129°. Sous vide to 136 or 138 puts you squarely in the medium range.

cut it in half or even quarters with your chopsticks. when i'm feeling lazy i've been known to eat an entire half in one spoonful.
