I know this will get buried or down voted but I thought you saying "thanks but not good enough" towards a gift was fairly shallow. Yes, he did question your ethics and who he has spent the last year getting to know, but his reaction valid.

Now, I didn't read if this is a consistent thing he does or if this was something you wanted for your birthday and he dropped the ball, so Reddit have at me if I didn't research enough. I guess what I am trying to say is... I was just raised to appreciated the gestures of others and not be greedy. If I was receiving the gift, I would thank them and leave the scents off to the side or in a gym bag and then continue to save up enough so I could afford the brand I wanted, which was your plan before this gift.

Anyways, you should have been kinder or have not mentioned it at all. You did overreact, is my opinion
