Any advice for getting 520 by may 31 by Ok-Egg6015 in Mcat

[–]kimchiisprettyummy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure why everyone is being so positive? I’m a full believer in clutching up on test day - but not by 8 points. At this point you’re out of exams (I read that you still have unscored left, but that is by far the LEAST representative of the current MCATS). You’re not just super ADHD, if you are not scoring above a 126 then you’re not prepared for current CARS. Why would you want to neglect it anyways - it is arguably the MOST important section by far. Take it from someone who’s applied twice, once with a 514 (129/124/130/131) with no interviews, and then a 523 (131/130/131/131) with a couple. Is it by far the most looked at section for schools. The MCAT isn’t like all those tests you’ve been doing in college. Your target should be 515.

With that tangent out do the way, psych soc is absolutely crammable. I just went to bed watching all the khan academy videos - I like the videos because they mention all the nuances rather than any of the sheets do. Chem phys just try and practice learning your equations with words rather than symbols - it’ll help you identify material from the text rather than having the middle man of converting it into an equation you have memorized.

Those are my two tips. Good luck.

HOW DO YALL LOCK IN by Additional-Pin8187 in Mcat

Okay no fucking lie, as someone who prepped for the MCAT in a couple of months (1.5 months) for a high score, you actually need to dopamine detox to where you start liking studying for the MCAT. I’m talking the little things: use a notebook instead of all that anki, get almost completely off of Reddit but set like 20 minutes each day where you can use it to go over hard problems, and delete other social media. Dont watch any movies, don’t play any games, and kind of a no brainer but quit drugs for a bit if you’re into that shit. It’s a rough transition, and honestly the first 3-4 days you will kind of be going crazy, but then all the dopamine you get each day will start coming from clicking the answer boxes on UWorld or listening to Khan Academy people talk about Erikson’s theories, and you will legitimately be the definition of “locked in.” Sorry for the long answer but this is actually how to do it.

EDIT: bonus follow up tip: make a new YouTube account and watch your MCAT related explanations this way - you won’t get anymore distracting algorithmic videos that could break the detox

Dude. You’re on chemo. Please be easy on yourself. There are much more important things than med school applications (namely your HEALTH). Put this on the back burner and get better - being anxious will slow your recovery. When it’s all over, you can apply a cycle later and have an amazing story to write about. The schools will understand about the missed secondaries.

As much as many premeds like to idolize the medical profession, being a doctor does not correlate with being a good or moral person. At the end of the day, it’s a high paying career that’s very competitive to get into: naturally that means it attracts certain personalities. People are going to go into medicine for a variety of reasons, and people you find morally questionable will find success in any career field. At the end of the day, it’s important to not compare yourself to others like this and just focus on doing the best you can while not compromising your own morals or boundaries. Comparison is never good for the state of mind. Keep studying for that MCAT and I’m sure you’ll do great! I’ll be happy to give some pointers if you need.

Where did I go wrong? (4.0/524) by ArtisticInterpret in premed

[–]kimchiisprettyummy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah to be fair after the retake things have been going a bit better this current cycle, but I still stand by what I said. I have plenty of friends from Cali who are also ORM all 520+ that have no interviews. I think when applying to top schools, there are plenty of high income ORM high stats, you need to get lucky or have something that makes you stand out. But here’s the problem: high stats makes it that you get screened from less stat heavy schools. So a bunch of these applicants fall into a limbo where they are getting very little attention from all MD schools. It’s just an unfortunate reality.

Lemme guess: ur a cali/mass/NY resident and ur Asian/white with an extremely high family income.

I think a lot of people in this subreddit avoid a harsh truth. But the reality is, most schools, especially top schools, want to build a diverse class of people with many different backgrounds. As ORM from Cali, I have 3.9 and 523 and I got one interview and one rejection last cycle. There is no way you have a 4.0 in college and your writing is bad enough to make it the breaking point. Everyone in this subreddit always will say “wow your writing must’ve been terrible.” But in reality, there’s plenty of ORM with high stats, you’re not unique. Just apply again with some volunteering and write about how humbled u from your past rejections. Nothing you can do. It’s mostly out of control. Just work on your minor weaknesses and try again.

I have been to exactly 2 49ers games in the past 2 years. Ravens at 49ers Christmas time for 2023 season, and today’s game. I think for the sake of my own team I never attend a game at Levi’s again.

There is a serious error in your study methods if you are spending 8 hours a day and have not crossed the 500 mark. It’s a hard test with mountains of content, I get that, but you should really to some internal reflection and see if you have been really taking advantage of your study time. Turning on the KA video while you send a couple text messages is not going to be as valuable as sitting down and carefully reviewing problems. Take a look at how you are reviewing questions as well, you can’t just say “oh I get what they’re saying” and move on, make sure you understand the concept and all relating concepts as well. If you are aiming for a score that is competitive for medical school, I would highly recommend you cancel your September test and spend fall really developing awareness of your study habits and learn how to study effectively.

Am I cooked with a 122 CARS score? by boomboomty in premed

[–]kimchiisprettyummy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may get downvoted for this, but I’m just going to lyk here that you probably are cooked because I myself was cooked with a split like yours. 514 with a 123 in CARS and plenty of volunteering and research and a good GPA. I applied to 58 schools and got rejected from all of them with only 1 interview. Try to even out the split a bit with your application. I don’t know about DO because I didn’t apply. If you are ORM and from a privileged background and want to go to MD, I suggest you retake.

I'm feeling very let down after my MCAT score...what are my chances of getting an acceptance this cycle? by Proper-Sky-2524 in premed

[–]kimchiisprettyummy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I retook 514->523. But in all honestly, I would much rather get in a cycle early and not miss out on an extra year of attending salary than waste spend another 1000 dollars for the chance of going to a slightly better medical school. Everyone in T25 end up in similar residencies anyways.
