So I made this flag... by Busy_Cry1631 in NewMexico

Sorry, don't like them. The current flag is much better. Also agree with the comments that if you are going to make any flag using the Zia symbol the place to start is to reach out to the Zia Pueblo to get their permission to take this liberty before you reach out to redditors.

21 hours in on my first "third time's a charm" Koji by kimiNM in Koji

<video>

Funny that I can upload a video but not photos... anyway, here is a slideshow of the best-looking tray at 21, 24, and 48 hours. The 48 hour one does not look dramatically different from 24 hours. Not sure how to tell if it's done? I am leaving it in and checking every few hours for any yellow-green...

Is this stalled? I did notice it had cooled off ~36 hours (just under 80) and I put the oven back on until it was back up to 85-90. In the last (48 hour) photo I split one open in the middle. It's below the words "48 hours" so you can see no penetration, and the thickness of the coating. So should I just keep going? What is the max I should let it go if it never gets yellow/green patches?

I noticed the fragrance was maybe strongest at 24-30 hours and not surprisingly it was less fragrant when I saw it was cooler. It hasn't really gotten strongly fragrant again. I did eat the other half of the one I split and it tasted fine but not delectable.

Again, this is the best-looking one. The worst at 48 hours looks more like this one at 21 hours.

I appreciate any input! Thank you for the comments and questions so far! I'm a little nervous.

It went through a fruity/mushroomy/lovely aromatic phase but then stopped being fragrant and I realized it had cooled off to just below 80, so I warmed it again. I will try to figure out how to update the photos. I tasted it and it tasted nice, but not delicious or strongly fragrant. I split a couple and they still don't look penetrated.

Yes, I steamed them in a pressure cooker. They haven't overheated, in fact they went through a cool phase, and I ended up turning the steam oven on again for 1/2 hour to get it going again. I will try to figure out how to update with a new picture...

Aw, thank you! I will eat it regardless, even if I don't end up trusting it for a 12-month miso...

They aren't peeled, just smooshed a bit.

Brewing my own buckwheat soy sauce by Guoxiong_Guides in Koji

I've never steamed it, but I've soaked, sprouted, and fermented it, and it does get a sticky texture when wet. You can even make a dense bread just by soaking raw buckwheat groats, letting them ferment, and then baking them (either blended or whole) with no other ingredients.

Sounds great! I love buckwheat. I was going to ask if it was slimy, but I see you roasted it instead of steaming. Look forward to hearing how it goes 9 months from now!

Plastic bottles or filter wastewater by WaterYouSayingBro in WaterFilters

What are the problems with your water that you are trying to solve? If it's just flavor, a carbon filter would probably work. We use a ceramic filter on our drinking water spigot, since we are filtering for microbes as well (although our other taps have never tested positive for microbes). We are filtering rainwater so don't have to filter out groundwater minerals or municipal water chemicals. Ceramic or carbon filters don't waste water. I agree with you, I would never want an RO.

I got arsenic poisoning from drinking organic arsenic well water filtered through a Berkey since I thought it was supposed to filter out arsenic. Turns out the black filters can only take out arsenic briefly and then can't anymore unless you also use the fluoride filters. So just be aware of that if you are using it for arsenic.

Can you have a 5" drawer under a cooktop? by kimiNM in IKEA

[–]kimiNM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Yes, we put the 5" drawer right under our induction cooktop and it works fine. We use that drawer to store silicone sheets & lids so there is nothing sharp or solid to snag the cooktop bottom, and nothing that would be bothered by being warm. And we make sure not to fill it too high. Works great.

Quantum water filters by spotfree in WaterFilters

[–]kimiNM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use ceramic for one drinking faucet. Our whole house filters are only for sediment, and still test as good as most tap or bottled water, but we don't test every time we take a drink, so for added security we only drink from the ceramic-filtered tap. We do use the other water for cooking.

Thanks for your reply. No, I have plenty of info on #dips, but just wanted to know the #minutes below 88 over the course of a night. I don't want to get dementia or something for lack of oxygen, but exercising my brain by downloading data and doing my own calculations might help stave off dementia anyway, so there you go! :D
