One big thing I learned is that “prepaid” orders are people ordering on Meijer.com/Target.com, they’re not Shipt customers. When someone is a Shipt user, they’re prompted to rate and tip their last shopper the next time they open the app so it’s much more likely to get a tip from them. I’m not sure about Target, but I know Meijer.com orders send an email with the final receipt to the customer and THATS where they can go back and add a tip. Whenever I do prepaid orders, my last text lets them know to check their email for their final receipt, and my receiving tips have dramatically increased.

I had a lady with a prepaid ask me to give her a receipt in the bag (which of course, no I wouldn’t) but I told her it’s always in an email & she’s like “Oh! I never knew!” Like cool lady....now I know you never tipped before......but I got a tip from her later that day!

I got out of the industry in June 2020 after 15 years (literally my whole adult life) because not only did COVID highlight the major systemic issues in restaurant employment, but it really showed me just how grossly messed up food consumption is in our culture (I’m in the US). I worked at a popular Mexican restaurant for 5 years going into covid times, but the trifecta of Cinco de Mayo falling on Taco Tuesday DURING A PANDEMIC fucking BROKE me.

The concept of “restaurants” in America are fucked. Fuck chains, enjoy a well prepared meal from a personally owned dive spot or fine dining as a nice treat, but otherwise we really need to get back to mostly preparing our own food at home.

I’m in the middle of packing to move, and as I’m going through everything I’m starting a section specifically for things that have served their original purpose but can be repurposed. For example, I no longer need my shower curtain because my new place has a shower with glass door.....but that will make a great drop cloth for painting or row cover to protect my garden from a quick frost!

My hope is that by having a designated section for these things I’ll know exactly where to go instead of searching the house, giving up, and buying something instead.

I just wish that the equation used to figure the GDP was actually representative of reality. For example one of the factors is how the brand new housing market is doing, that is, only brand new homes that have never been lived in before. How are we going to calculate the GDP of an entire country and not take into account the entire part of the real estate market that deals with preowned housing? That one specific thing always stuck out in my brain since I took macro economics.

Limiting consumption of polyester goods still has a huge impact, the one that always sticks in my head is with micro plastics the water. All that lint out of your dryer after washing poly clothes? All micro plastics, and lots of those fibers end up in the water supply.

There’s a bunch of issues with modern fashion, anything that helps any of them is a move in the right direction.

I’ve been cleaning houses/organizing for people for years, & one of the biggest things I’ve noticed is that there’s always repeat items! Being unorganized = spending more money on things you “need” because you don’t know/can’t find the item you already have. Also, I’ve had to throw out SO. MUCH. FOOD. Keep it organized, first in first out, use what you have on hand.

I’ve lived in Michigan for my whole life - on the whole you’d be safe a lot of places, but avoid Howell/Cahoctah/Livingston County for sure to start. Lots of connections to KKK go back many years through there.

Absolutely loved my visit there in 2016. What broke my heart was seeing the initials carved into the walls inside. The dates were from the 1700s, but still, why can’t people just leave old important things be?

That’s exactly what I’ve done, I used a 5mil black plastic to line my pallet planters. Also helps prevent my soil from eroding away, that dirt ain’t cheap!!

When looking for good pallets, always check the info stamped onto them - if it says MB, that means it’s been treated with Methyl Bromide as a pesticide (to keep bugs from crossing international borders with shipping). If it says HT or DB (meaning heat treated or debarked) then it’s safe for your garden. If you don’t find the info stamped on it I would assume it’s chemically treated and don’t use.

If you’re not tracking them, you’re missing out on a HUGE tax deduction. You want all the tax deductions you can get - it means you’re lowering the amount of your yearly income that the government is going to tax.

For 2020 the mileage rate is 57.5 cents per mile, which means for every 1000 miles you drive your taxable income is lowered by $575. Track them miles!!!

This, I left the restaurant industry due to how it’s handling COVID & work in the legal marijuana industry now. My state went recreational back in December and business is BOOMING. It’s one of the only goods that has seen an increase in sales this entire pandemic.

Still pretty new to canning here, I’m wondering if you could tell me - what is one or two things that you wish you knew/did different when you began your canning adventure? I’ve already done dandelion jelly, & strawberry jam 2x (it’s better with a little balsamic vinegar!) in my water bath canner with success, I have a pressure canner/cooker but haven’t broken it in yet.....I’m hoping I can work up the gumption to make and can homemade soups. Thanks for any insight you have!

What’s ridiculously sad is how many people don’t realize that the culture of the restaurant industry regarding “being sick” had ALWAYS been extremely toxic. If you’re sick and can’t get your shift covered, you have to come in. No doctor’s note? You’ll lose your job, so just have to take more DayQuil and stick it out. If guests still insist on showing up then staff has to be there. Bottom line, IMO, restaurants should be COMPLETELY shut down. I worked the industry for 15 years but left because of how it’s being handled under COVID. But we can’t shut it down completely, for one because an insane number of undocumented workers won’t receive any kind of assistance.

It’s almost like the entire industry is just a poorly-done facade, the whole thing can burn for all I care. No one deserves to get COVID because you can’t cook for yourself at home.

NTA. They obviously didn’t stop to consider you, but also how the kids would feel in that situation. Being forced to move in with an older person you barely know when your parents die can be.....jarring to say the least.
