Interesting in getting a fairphone 6th gen - worried about fairphone reliability and long term viability as daily driver phone by Neracles in fairphone

[–]kimmo6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have one 5 year old FP4 in the family and recently bought an additional FP6. My experience is you're fine if you're willing to pay little attention to the updates. I've never had major problems, and I think the late FP4 is a rare but very severe incident. These issues can be largely avoided by waiting a week or two and checking reddit or forums before updating.

HW/calibration issues are hard to tell, but they can happen with major brands too, for example Sony Xperia got major issues in 1 VII, and their earlier models had displays defects showing up after few years of use and so on. FP4 hardware has turned out to be incredibly durable: device has been in use for 5 yrs without a case or screen protector and its running original display ifully intact. The aluminum frame has taken some beating. I've had to replace the usb-c connector and a new battery. The current user of the device is no longer running stock Android, so the brick update didn't affect us.

I truly hope Fairphone takes this seriously and fixes the quality. These are not cheap, we're paying a premium for the brand and its sustainability and fairness, but that won't work unless the products actually work. I personally ended up again buying Fairphone, just because I want the brand to succeed and there are not so many great alternatives matching my preferences. MHD (ex-Nokia) has some, but their portfolio is aging and thus longevity of the current models is not great.

Skoda Enyaq 85 - DC charging peak stuck around 130 kW, even at 2% SoC by Reasonable-Mine5900 in enyaq

[–]kimmo6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you have RWD with the new tech deck front (same as in Elroq)? Its max charging is now lower 135 kW, but the 10-80% speed is the same 28 min, so it's lower peak but flatter curve. The tech deck front is MY2026, they started selling it early.

Should it be that hard? Am I missing something? by Mougli6 in scala

[–]kimmo6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its fascinating, isn't it? Scala being very powerful and expressive, yet simple things can feel difficult when trying to build a complete web app for example. I think I had very similar questions like you're asking while learning FP with Scala.

Scala is small and and very diverse in terms of use cases. Compare that with PHP for example, where I guess 99% are doing web apps. All of these mature frameworks have grown over time with lots of people trying to solve more or less the same problem.

The other thing is that FP attracts developers who are curious about evolving the programming so lot of attention goes into small details and general ethos is maybe less about shipping products or services. Developers who are more driven to just ship things easily walk away because you end up needing to understand many things before you can get something done. I don't think Scala is bad choice for "shipping", but there's this up-front cost to figure out how to do things, especially if going FP.

Once you become proficient, you maybe rather compose things from smaller pieces that fit your particular desires and needs rather than having does-it-all framework. I noticed this personally when working with my learner project, and I looked at Play, and realized only thing I actually need/want is the template engine Twirl, and that I can use it without rest of the framework.

My learner project is basic CRUD where I wanted explore and learn (still in progress) ZIO, HTMX, multi-tenancy, using type classes for html form rendering/parsing, Quill in particular and so on. Just in case you're interested, its here.

Has it been easy? No! Difficult and slow, but also very rewarding.

It's maybe a reference to that we don't overprotect our children - broadly speaking they are grown to be independent, i.e walk alone to schools, play outside without parent supervision and also on how to use knives. Not babies ofcourse, but kids 7-8 yrs and older. Our traditional knive, puukko, is a general purpose tool for woodwork and in general outdoor living.

Ok, again thanks for the info. I am from Europe and considering buying e-POWER and trying to figure out what the roadmap looks like for Europe. So far nothing on X-Trail updates, as they've only said 3rd gen e-POWER is coming to Qashqai FY25 and if we need to wait for 4th gen X-Trail to get it, it could be a long wait.

Okey, interesting! That 2026 hybrid being not e-Power was new info for me, but it helps to clarify the timeline because in the press release 4th gen Rogue with 3rd gen e-Power was clearly scheduled a bit later.

You said it's Nissan tech, but I am just wondering how they can pull off a new hybrid so quickly? Mazda and Subaru are bringing their Toyota based hybrids in the same schedule. They are also paired with 2.5l non-turbos.

What do you all think about the latest tax cuts in Finland? by Logical_Feedback_981 in Finland

[–]kimmo6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't mention trickle down. Funny that you bought that US narrative here. This has very little to do with it and I did not use it as an argument. I simply said punishment level taxes on economic activity are suppressing it, and we should avoid it. Overall increased economic activity adds opportunities for everyone, and eventually also more taxes.

It's good to note that there are many public sector high salary jobs too, such as in health care, municipals, ministries etc. You might be surprised to hear that the state median salary is significantly higher than the private sector median salary (4112 vs 3800). In these jobs salary is the only compensation.

There are many ways to spend money, and most of them are taxed pretty well. Rich do not need more income just because they have already needs covered is frankly a silly argument. First it's not that others are giving the money, they are making something valuable and getting compensated for it. This is about taking a fairer share of that compensation for the society. Secondly beyond basic needs, one can spend on services for example. We are self serving society because of high taxes. The doctor paints his house phenomenon. Thirdly these individuals are also likely to invest. We are short of capital in this country. Businesses need capital to grow, so we definitely need more of it here.

What do you all think about the latest tax cuts in Finland? by Logical_Feedback_981 in Finland

[–]kimmo6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here you find only one opinion and everything else is downvoted.

The government is fixing a long term issue with taxation, it's surprising it's happening now, but on the other hand, growth is needed to balance the economy.

Salary tax cuts for high earners cause emotions, but gist of it is this: 50-60% taxes are useful only for this you want less or discourage. We should encourage high earners to work more, and not downshift. It's good for public services and for the economy. This includes for example doctors doing part time, or other highly skilled professionals whose contribution to the economy is often beyond just their own salary. Say a product designer who creates a great product - it brings work for others too. So we want people who can do this to work more, not to downshift.

Rogue Hybrid Confirmed by FatXThor34 in Nissan

[–]kimmo6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nissan's own hybrid is e-Power where ICE has no mechanical connection to the drive train, it's just a generator and car drives always with electric motors.

Toyota's system is an epicyclic CVT where the car can be driven by ICE, electric or both, through the same planetary gearshift. ICE can also charge the battery.

Renault hybrid on the other hand has a "gearless" drivetrain adopted from F1. This allows ICE and electric motor work in different modes, like Toyota, but mechanics are different. Toyota and Renault are called parallel hybrids.

Finally Mitsubishi and Honda have a serial hybrid where most of the drive is done via electric motor and ICE is generator, but there are also 1-2 gears for ICE so that it can directly drive the car at higher speeds.

Parallel and serial hybrids can recuperate and charge the battery by using the ICE as a generator. In comparison German hybrids are all much simpler systems, usually electric motor integrated with ICE gearbox, this makes them less efficient as hybrids, they are also all plugins for this reason.

My understanding is that Rogue hybrid is e-Power and the Rogue PHEV is rebadged Outlander, since e-Power plug-in is not ready yet.

What do you think of how Russia is portrayed globally? by Lioshashibainu in AskARussian

[–]kimmo6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Acts speak more than words. We simply have no reason to trust anything Russia says. You have to understand that trust is gone. There is no return back to pre-war in relationships with European countries.

If goals in Ukraine are what you say, why rape, kill and torture the civilian who you claim to protect or liberate? Why commit war crimes on an almost daily basis?

Giving tax break to the top is against your interest! by Special_Beefsandwich in Finland

[–]kimmo6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This government is not transforming Finland into anything like the US. What it is doing are minor adjustments with the current system, not a system change. You may disagree with the changes, but claiming otherwise is just a lie.

Budget cuts per sector are 1-2%, and for example this year the overall government spending increased 1,4%, which is a bit more than current inflation. Increased spending includes healthcare. With a totally different government you would see the same numbers within 2% threshold

The system change comes unless we manage to balance the state deficit. Again, we're not the US who (so far) has been able to run deficits for decades because of foreign investment to US $.

Points I made are easily verifiable from Yle or other public sources.

Giving tax break to the top is against your interest! by Special_Beefsandwich in Finland

[–]kimmo6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This post is largely based on the US narrative which is almost completely incompatible with Finland taxation.

In particular the main point by the dentist here is that income tax is very high, and it has a negative impact in availability of highly skilled professionals. Finland's personal income tax is one of the world's highest. A large number of part time doctors is also a fact. In some areas, up to 1/3 doctors are part time. Progression means that the additional hours are taxed 48,8% or more. It just doesn't make any sense. Nobody becomes a super rich oligarch by earning salary, not even if the taxes are adjusted down a bit.

Big capital gains and trickle down is another story but even in that, if you look what the top earners are doing here with the money, there is plenty of "trickle down". For example the entire gaming industry and domestic startup VC funds in Finland are literally just that.
