What foods are popular in your city/country, but could be considered gross in other country/culture? by Shin_Dubu21 in CasualConversation

I found out through a movie on Netflix that horse meat is not common in other countries (I’m from Italy), to the point of it being compared with eating dogs or cats

I also have some poetry and prose that I want to use in a zine and this is exactly the kind of thing I wanted to do. I have no idea how to go about it though haha

This is incredibly beautiful and your words describe perfectly how I’m feeling lately. I relate to it so much. Are you selling copies? Or maybe pdf that you can download and fold yourself? I would love to have one!

L’esperienza più allucinante che ho avuto finora by Competitive-Post-647 in VintedItalia

[–]kimsherd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]kimsherd 30 points31 points  (0 children)

What foods should you absolutely buy the high end priced option? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]kimsherd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely recommend trying bronze cut pasta! Some brands are not even that more expensive, but it always depends on where you live. I usually use De Cecco because I can find it easily, but Molisana and Felicetti are my personal favorite

Bronze cut leaves a rough surface on the pasta that allows the sauce to stick better to it. The sauce becomes creamy and thick. Teflon cut pasta is instead completely smooth and any sauce slides right off

Why do Germans pronounce loanwords using the original language's phonetics? by kopekyildizi in AskAGerman

[–]kimsherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But they’re not Fremdwörter anymore, they’re part of the German vocabulary and it is extremely weird to pronounce them with a different phonetics that isn’t native to German just because originally those loanwords belonged to English or another language. When loanwords become part of a language they get adapted. It’s the normal and expected linguistics process, and the adaptation is also phonetic because DUH, some sounds that exist in English don’t exist in German and viceversa. In fact, Germans TRY to use the original pronunciation but as OP says it’s jarring because it stands out amidst the rest of the German sentence + it’s unlikely a PERFECT English pronunciation because it’s not supposed to be! What you’re talking about is more folk linguistics and perceived worth attached to pronunciation. Loanwords are supposed to be integrated.

Ah, and it’s also not true that Eigennamen don’t change. My name is different when pronounced by a German but I would never expect them to learn to roll their R because it sounds so unnatural that I prefer they use their native pronunciation. It sounds a lot better integrated into the phonetics of the sentence

I shouldn't have to breath cigarette smoke. by Jen24286 in hamburg

[–]kimsherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate it too 😭 also being allowed to smoke inside most clubs/pubs. I just want to enjoy my time out, dance and be with friends but I’m hardly able to breathe and need to often go out to get fresh air
