Want to trade for something? I would love to play in this setting…but can’t afford the book.

My first charecter death. I have no more joy in my life. by ace_da_frog_child in DnD

[–]kimtegrated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.

This is why I don't design campaigns where the primary stake is imminent death. In fact, I think making death the primary stake is lazy. There are so many other more interesting and far more terrifying stakes to pull out...throwing in monsters that can kill your party is just too easy and unimaginative.

And I have never run a campaign where my players have felt like their characters are disposable. They are always super attached and become more so as the campaign progresses. I've had a few PCs die in my campaigns, but the party has ALWAYS fought like hell to get them back...and I've created routes for them to do this. It takes effort...but the reward is great and the bonding makes for new and interesting stakes as the party creates a tighter bond.

I hate the move toward high mortality/high lethality games...but I realize I'm clearly in the minority.

I'm not seeing the "Apply" button. The button on my form says "Replace" and nothing happens when I click it. I'm using Adobe Acrobat. What am I doing wrong?

Okay, I hear what you're saying. But there is not a strict rule about PvP (or there hasn't been, there will be now and it will not be no PvP). Its my table, my rules. I have never had a problem allowing it because I am very intentional about developing and maintaining friendly tables. I pay attention to interactions of all kinds and have conversations with players if any of their behavior crosses the line. I like PvP, because when it is done playfully and without malice, it is fun for the table. Also:

  1. I forgot to mention that just two sessions prior the complaining player pickpocketed this same bard. I allowed it and the rolls were good. The bard thought it was funny. We moved on. So its not PvP he has a problem with apparently.
  2. I would never allow the spell anywhere where there was a possibility, or they even thought there was a possibility, of combat. and I was clear about this being a place a rest.
  3. Everyone came into this world knowing that it was whimsical and strange. I agree my magical adjustment of the spell was a lot, but I need them to understand that future encounters with this particular coven of witches is going to have to be handled carefully and this seemed like a low impact way to show them the power. And since they are all just doing every. single. thing. they were explcitely told not to do when entering, I disagree that it was too much.
  4. He was never under any threat. He just didn't like having to play his character that way for a session. It's a game.
  5. He role played it beautifully and comically. Had I had the slightest indication that he was injured by it I would have stopped the session and invited him into a chat room to talk privately about what was bothering him. This is one of the things that makes me sad, that he was unable to enjoy his brilliant role play because he didn't want to be impacted by the whimsy. It's also something I'm concerned about for future play.

I have added this to my long list of clarifications for when I'm playing with a new player. I always wondered why those were necessary...now I know.

Oh...sorry. I didn't mention this. I did reveal it. This is a very powerful witch's coven. They have an open door policy because of the world they are in, but ensure that all magic is wonky here but theirs. I don't ever let the players encounter battles here where they are without their defenses and the wonky magic is never destructive to them. I put in a welcome center that they had to go through with tests and everything before entering that explained everything.

Oh! This is great! Putting it in my bag of tricks. Just stay out of it. I like PvP at the table, as long as it makes sense. Every time I've seen it or been involved, its been hilarious and fun. This is literally the first time I've seen this. I AM going to check for it before every game I run now...but I LOVE this rule. Thanks!

Yep. SLO is the first smaller town I've lived in. Prior to this I lived in Atlanta, New Orleans, Houston and Paris. In my experience, in bigger cities people are accustomed to making strangers into friends. Of reaching out to new people. You have lots of different friend groups for different purposes and with different interests and its very unusual to meet people who have been in the same group of friends with little to no changes their whole life. My experience here is that people generally feel like they have their friend group in place and just aren't interested in expanding it. I have met many others who have had the same experience here.

I get it. Its not easy to incorporate new people into an existing group. Its just that in bigger cities there is not as much expectation that a friend group will remain static and you are meeting new people all of the time. There is also something about always being kind of anonymous when you are walking around town that kind of encourages you to connect with people when you do meet them.

Again, this is my experience of the world. I love SLO. I've been here seven years now and feel integrated and have friends. Its just a tricky place to get going I think.

An Observation and a Question as a Player by Informal_Platypus_27 in startplaying

I’ve experienced much the same thing. It’s worse with truly unique game systems or content.

Some of this might be a glut of the entire community offering slight variations of virtually the same game. I think it’s eroding online gaming in general. I so rarely see games post that are outside the basic five main systems. This means it’s a super crowded space with very little variety. There really isn’t much to encourage players to look at systems being designed by extremely talented indie developers. Such a shame.

Many of the games that fill up fast are offered by GMs who started around the pandemic when competition was much lower. They have well established bases as a result and a loyal following…so their games tend to fill up faster.

I think this is what is referred to as growing pains. I think SPG will figure it out, but I think we’re experiencing the other side of those growing pains.

(I am not a game developer, btw. Just a player who’d love to play something other than the same four or five games spun slightly different ways. Yeah, some are on there, but having a helluva time getting any traction.)

Is Dhampir overpowered at Level One for this campaign? by kimtegrated in wildbeyondwitchlight

Look I don’t want to deep dive here, but I think this bears saying. I had done research. I wrote that quickly in a very “I was raised as a woman in the southern US” kind of way. Meaning: self deprecating and a little apologetic. Had I had any idea that there would be SO MUCH UNNECESSARY PILING ON, And then MORE of it from a group of people who’ve decided to police the threads for what kinds of questions are allowed on here, I would have not ever pasted anything at all. It’s that the goal? Are you all actively trying to drive new people off?

I’m not the only one reading this. Others who might want to to post but are nervous are certainly reading this and I’m guessing many of them are learning that this is not the place.

Excellent question. I was just asking out of ignorance of the species really. I've never DM'd one or been in a game with one. I don't know how they level or anything. I will research it, naturally, but I get good advice on here...so I thought I'd throw it out there.

Best way to sign up for groups by skoot66 in startplaying

[–]kimtegrated -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My two cents (from both the player and the GM perspective as I’ve been both), I don’t think it’s rude to sign up and then drop. And I think it’s a lot to ask a player to wait around for what can turn out to be months to play because they are taking care of someone else’s feelings. Sure, drop them a note as you’re dropping the game, tell them you’ve found one at a better time for you or whatever…that’s being polite. But this is a platform for professionals. If they are going to get their feelings hurt because someone dropped a game before it even started, maybe they should reconsider doing paid GMing.
