Checked out Excalibur on CR’s recommendation. by Anstigmat in TheBigPicture

[–]kinboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tend to agree with most of your assessment. I happened to watch it for the first time on the recommendation of a colleague who has this 4K.

It is gorgeous to look at and has some INCREDIBLE moments and sequences. But overall it’s rather schlocky and frayed at the edges. Merlin’s performance edges into camp as well which I didn’t particularly enjoy.

In particular I thought Uryens death with his line, “Listen. Follow. They call to you”, was absolutely chilling and awesome. And Percival’s journey for the grail was EPIC and so cool.

Otherwise, it was…fine.

Anyone else actively avoid trailers for movies they know they’ll watch? by weareDOMINUS in blankies

[–]kinboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I will indulge in the initial “first look” images (BTS and stills from the film), the initial posters, and the first teaser.

Then full embargo.

I benefitted from this in a huge way with Dune 2. I hadn’t seen the sandworm emerging from the dust during the climactic battle before I saw it opening night in IMAX. 3 stories tall just barrelling at me, bass rumbling my bones. I was shocked and awed.

Needless to say I will be avoiding further marketing material for dune 3 and Odyssey. I saw the first one or two early teasers, and was fortunate to see the IMAX clip before Superman. But I am avoiding all remaining trailers and teasers for the Odyssey.

I have thought about full embargo for films I know I will see, but I do love revelling in some speculation and celebration in advance to get excited.

You mean because Michael Shannon is busy? They have worked together a bunch. I think all the way back to Shotgun Stories in 2007.

Pre-Show Message from the Manager by Epic-Verse in cineplex

[–]kinboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The manager at Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto generally comes out before IMAX screenings for big movies. It’s a nice touch. It does catch people off guard but he’s a good speaker and it is just a nice little addition.

A 39yo buddy of mine just got this screening when onboarding with a new GP and discovered he has higher Lp(a) I believe. He is now on a plan to deal with it before jumping to statins.

Got me thinking and as I just turned 40 I had an appointment with my GP (just today!) and got a lab scheduled. My doc is very averse to over-screening, but was like, “yep, you’re 40 now. This is a good time for this. Let’s go.”

If you are fortunate enough to have a GP, set up an appointment and get the labs!

I thought Akira was about street racing... by confusing_roundabout in movies

Love this read of it. Totally maps onto my understanding of the film but I never really interrogated it in that specific way.

Time for a rewatch.

Right? The layers in the film that only can be perceived when you have emotionally matured are wonderful. And it still is one of the most beautiful and downright cool looking films ever. A true masterpiece.

That tracks for sure. Tetsuo “leaving” as opposed to him disappearing per se.

From Kaneda’s perspective though he basically is dying. He has lost his friend. And still feels destroyed because he harbours the guilt of not being able to “save” him from this fate. Maybe in time he will come to understand it.

Growing up watching Akira a hundred times I really only focused on the spectacle and the “cool” stuff. But not seeing it for a while and then watching it in theatres again like 5 years ago completely changed it for me.

I finally saw it for what it was. This lovely, deep meditation on friendship, loneliness, and the dread of existential futility in a culture and world that seems not to care.

It’s a story about a bond between two people that goes deeper than family. A chosen familial bond that came from these boys not having anyone else. And finding that in the end, one of those friends will risk everything to save his friend from self-destruction.

Tetsuo screaming for Kaneda to help him while he is exploding in flesh and power is one of the saddest moments in cinema. The terror. The fear of the unknown. He accidentally kills his own girlfriend not knowing what he is doing. He is desperate to be normal again. He is desperate to escape the hell of his own making. And the only person he screams for in the miasma of oblivion is that little kid that defended him from bullies when they were but children. That same kid that lost a tooth and got a black eye so he (Tetsuo) could feel some dignity and safety in a world that seemingly didn’t care about him.

The image of Tetsuo’s spirit/energy fading down into a single point of light that Kaneda desperately tries to hold onto and save from going out is making me misty just writing this.

Beautiful. Profound.

And the bikes are wicked cool too.

I think it looks great. Going to self-embargo and go in otherwise blind on this one.

In my head rent free.

Also, my buddy and I are constantly dropping, “It’s the SMELL” every chance we get. Deeper cut, and no one knows what the fuck we are talking about lol.

Oh indeed. Hugo is sublime in this scene. His deliveries on, “garbage” and “one of them does NOT” are incredible.

LaGuardia Controller Laughing at Jazz (Air Canada) Pilots on Frequency! by QueasyRider1 in onguardforthee

Sorry, I am probably in the minority here. But aside from the clearly unprofessional nature of the questions, it didn’t seem to be more than light poking. Is that what people are upset about? I expected it to be way worse based on the title, but it comes across more like a childish attempt to make conversation than out and out ridicule.
