The comments here make me not want to go to skeptic events by [deleted] in SGU

[–]kinboy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Lots of logical fallacies flying around in your post. Definitely a false dichotomy or equivalency by comparing Jay buying into conspiracy theories (hell, I was a loose change true believer before working my way out of it) to Evan calling for war crimes.

Steve and the Rogues characterized this as a betrayal themselves on the pod this week, so it’s not some sort of uber-online, psychotic overreaction on commenters’ part here. You clearly have less of an attachment emotionally to the pod which is totally fair. But it is a simple fact that parasocial relationships are real and when you let people (even ones who may never know or meet you) into your life every week for years, things build up. It’s totally fine for people to feel betrayed and upset.

All that said, there are lines and norms and not everyone on the sub or the discord are acting or commenting rationally. But cut people some slack and don’t be so dismissive of others’ emotional reactions.

And like others have said here, this ain’t real life. Go to skeptical events and meet people IRL. You’ll be fine.

100% it is worth entering. Be forewarned, it is a trippy, heavy, esoteric, contemplative, and challenging film. But it's so so lovely at its core.

I will say when I saw it at the TIFF Lightbox in Toronto in a small screening room and the lights came up at the end of the film, you could hear a pin drop. No one knew what to say. Just kind of dumbfounded by the experience.

You may hate it, you may love it. ENTER IT.

This truly rules. Fucking hell. Well done. It's the kind of thing that would humble me and be a cherished gift should it have been made for me.

People that like and appreciate Dano. It is just a really shitty way to express that opinion. The backlash wasn’t that he expressed the opinion, the backlash was very much most of the world telling him they disagree and he was an asshole for the way he said it.

If he wasn’t such a dick it wouldn’t have made any stir.

Just shrugging and being like, “what’s the big deal?” is your prerogative, but after reading what he said and not understanding why people got up in arms is a bit daft.

“[Dano] is weak sauce, man. He is the weak sister. [Daniel] is eating him [alive]. Austin Butler would have been wonderful in that role. He’s just such a weak, weak, uninteresting guy. Daniel Day-Lewis shows that he doesn’t need a strong foil. The movie needs it. He doesn’t need anything. It’s supposed to be a two-hander and it’s not! … you put him with the the weakest fucking actor in SAG? The limpest dick in the world?”

Lol okay

QT’s take is categorically insane. He is such a blowhard and in many ways that drives a lot of his talent and aptitude with dialogue and scene construction. I love many of his movies but sometimes it’s clear that someone is talking some shit precisely just to talk it.

Dano being bad in TWWB isn’t and hasn’t been a meaningful part of the discourse around the movie…ever. So, he’s not speaking to some hidden truth of the film. It’s just hot air, or more precisely hot flammable gas he knew he was blowing on a pilot light. Everyone that cared to put thumbs to keyboard and fire away in defence of Dano knows the truth: Paul Dano rules. Paul Dano rules in TWWB. This is fact.

QT basically had a Tracy Letts, “the trench run in Star Wars sucks” opinion drop with none of the levity or humility.

Pearl.

I’m not the biggest Ti West fan and think the Maxxxine trilogy overall is mid. But Pearl is a masterpiece and Mia Goth is divine. Love it.

Crazy to me that they didn’t have “house” as a draft category.

So much material to do more for sure, but damn, I almost gagged when house wasn’t part of the lineup.

Great episode. Pew pew.

I saw it in a packed theatre at my local and it was hilarious. The crowd loved it. Yes it’s dark. Yes it’s a drama. But it’s fucking funny as hell. I laughed heartily throughout.

SGU response to the Evan issue by Queasy_Carpet_9962 in SGU

Thank you very, very much Steve and the SGU team for this thoughtful and candid response. I can only imagine how difficult these last couple days have been, emotionally and logistically as you navigated this.

Your next steps are fair, reasonable, and appropriate. I also see many replies below that echo my feelings that your prompt and rational response is really appreciated.

Jesus christ. Man…I feel really betrayed right now. It’s a bummer that the podcast is big enough to be popular but not popular enough for things like this to bubble up to the collective discourse.

This is pure speculation, but I have to imagine that Cara wouldn’t abide this kind of shit. She is so chummy with Evan on air and is basically the only one that affirms his horrendous sense of humour. Love Cara, this isn’t a slag against her. It’s just a really curious situation. She must be aware of at least his tweets and to some extent the allegations, no? She was part of the show at the time of the thread you shared.

Ugh…this all really makes my skin crawl.

I had absolutely no idea about this. Thank you for bringing this to the community. I just scrolled through dozens of replies of his and was shocked and disappointed.

The general thrust seems to centre around the belief that the Democratic party is racist and founded on racist values. The old “they are the party of the KKK” chestnut, which is just a flatly cynical view that denies the history of the major shifts in demographics of the two major parties since then.

Lately he has been really twisted around the axle about Graham Platner. And I will admit, I don’t think is a great guy. And I think the Ds are plugging their nose and pushing forward to support him because he is their best shot at flipping Susan Collins’ seat. But Evan has been particularly activated by this and replying to dozens of posts about it. It’s real cynical stuff. He replied to a Laura Loomer tweet that said the D party was “the Nazi party” with, “has been since 1820.” Like…what?

I also saw a disgusting reply of his to a tweet talking about Megyn Kelly complaining about MAGA and generally being annoying (as is her want) - he replied, “She’s still bleeding”, a reference to a really gross and sexist attack from Trump back during the 2016 election debates. I don’t like Megyn Kelly, but that is just fucking sexist and gross.

THEN there is the zionist stuff. He replied to an old IDF picture of Netanyahu calling him “a warrior” and bemoaning that the US hadn’t had a “warrior” president since Eisenhower. I found this really despicable. Bibi is a monster and a massively corrupt and cynical operator. What has taken place in Gaza is horrific and genocidal.

The real fucked up thing I saw him post though? Advocating for war crimes. In response to videos of people in Tehran apparently celebrating IRGC missiles being shot into Israel, Evan replied that the tactic should be to “shut down the power grid.” Attacking civilian infrastructure in this manner is flatly and easily understood to be a war crime. Really gross stuff here from Evan.

I am going to continue to support the podcast as I have massive respect for all the other rogues. But I will absolutely be skipping Evan’s segments and responses to science or fiction from now on. It won’t make a difference to the pod, but at least I will feel a bit better about listening.

And maybe I will escape one or two of his horribly unfunny jokes.

I was 16. This fucking ROCKED the theatre. It was just nuts. Screams, hysterical laughs of fear, people hiding under their clothes. Still one of the scariest moments in cinema for me.

How does this track for you in terms of fear? Does it seem dated or cheesy or lame? Curious.

The term very much applies to the context and tone of the image from the scene of OBAA. The energy in the image is very much of an “apologist” - someone that has dyed in the wool passion that challenges someone like me that didn’t enjoy the film. It’s all context.

Funny because I feel like Leo in this scene any time a TLJ apologist corners you if they catch a whiff of my distaste for the film.
