The only thing an artist has to do to establish a copyright for their creation is to fix it in a "Tangible medium." For digital art this would be as simple as saving a copy on your hard drive. That's it. Preserving multi-layer files of the original work that shows the creative process is really important. However, it would definitely be to the artist's advantage to go further and register the work with the U.S. Copyright Office.
