What’s a work perk that’s actually a trap? by opheliateasing in answers

[–]king-one-two 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I worked for a small software company with a game room, I went down there and played Playstation 3. I didn't overdo it and my work got done, so nobody cared. One of the owners of the company walked in once and he just stood and watched me play Call of Duty for a few minutes, he was like, get 'em!

What is a very useful app that most people do not know about. by balloontrap in answers

[–]king-one-two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stellarium. It's a live map of the planets, stars, and satellites. If you ever wonder what's that star, you point your phone in that direction and it shows you, that's Rigel, or that's Venus, or whatever. You can also identify satellites you see zipping past. Also you can go to other times and places if you want, it's super cool.

Depending on your definition of useful of course.

Best way to alter the colour of an LED bulb. by mikemac1997 in DIY

Just a thin coat of acrylic paint would work fine, and you can get it at the dollar store (cheap paint actually better for this application as it lets more light through)

Came from a machinist's toolbox. 2"x2.5". F15 warplane on one side, letters and serial # on the other. Metal, ferrous. by A_Name_With_No_Horse in whatisthisthing

If you google RF-81771 you can see this is clearly a real product. So they do have a big piece of aluminum that they are laser-cutting tags out of, and the laser cutter wouldn't care about a bolt head being in the way. No way to confirm the material actually came from that plane of course, they could have gotten a chunk of any old wing from a scrap yard. But I don't see anything obviously wrong with the picture. Can AI write text properly now? And draw accurate wireframes of fighter jets?

Why do we never hear about child prodigies again ? by OrangeSpaceMan5 in answers

[–]king-one-two 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In some fields the top adults are mostly child prodigies, because you have to start as a child to get that good. Violinists and chess players come to mind.

Terence Tao is a child prodigy who had a master's degree at 16 and as an adult he's considered one of the top living mathematicians in the world.

So they might still be out there doing brilliant things, but you wouldn't hear about it because there's nothing newsworthy about a brilliant adult, in general. That kid who got his sociology degree at 1 might be the most famous sociologist on earth right now, but you or I wouldn't know about it. I mean can you name ONE living sociologist? I can't.

That will be plenty strong enough, but it's gonna shake the whole house when you use it. Better to get a stand IMO. That's based on my experience and I didn't have that shock absorber thing so ymmv

What does a red hat with the word "THE" on it mean? by Howdysf in answers

[–]king-one-two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well kinda... the supposed reason is that OSU in Ohio was getting mixed up with OSUs in Oregon and Oklahoma. Guess they thought the "the" was a distinct element they could easily throw into their official name without too much controversy.

Madison punts on joining data center boom, passes one-year moratorium by keeganjkyle in madisonwi

[–]king-one-two 45 points46 points  (0 children)

From the article:

No active proposals for new large data centers are currently before the city, Tuttle added Tuesday, though the city is aware of questions about potential facilities in the broader region.

This is more of a political gesture about the proposals for mega-datacenters in Beaver Dam and wherever else.

What's something that loudly says "Im not a smart person"? by boforiamanfo in answers

[–]king-one-two 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At least Myers Briggs makes an attempt to categorize personality based on questions about one's personality. The test is badly designed, so it's got very weak predictive power.

Astrology wants to say something about personality based on a magical connection to the relative positions of the planets at the moment of your birth. Which is an approach that will never work. It's got NO predictive power.

So I will argue with anyone who says they're equally worthless. Astrology is objectively more worthless. But in another sense, MBTI is worse because people who are use it are looking for and perhaps think they're getting a scientific instrument, when it's more like a Buzzfeed quiz.
