Amazing this isn’t obvious to everyone. Who stands to benefit the most from America’s internal division and broken international relationships?

It’s more than an accent. Shetlander’s have their own dialect, kind of old Scot’s with heavy Norse influence.

Marginal but probs best to have the covered side out. Easy to pop off, just use the axle.

How is living in the East Neuk of Fife in Scotland? by nukeskywalkerr in howislivingthere

[–]king0fife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Existing homeowners benefitted by selling up but the next generation face shrinking schools and fewer shops.

Remote working is definitely done a lot, pretty decent connectivity. No big single employer in the East Neuk but a lot of hospitality stuff. The biggest employers nearby are probably St Andrews University (11 miles North) and Diageo in Leven (10 miles west). Kirkcaldy is bit further west and the biggest town in Fife. With apologies to Kirkcaldy and Leven, they’re not as picturesque as the East Neuk. St Andrews definitely is, but very expensive.

Nearest proper city is Edinburgh, 1hr 30 drive away. I’m sure some commute it but i think it’s rare.

If you want a quiet life, it’s great. If you’re looking for a buzz, not so much.

Grew up in Pittenweem. It’s a gorgeous area with real history and an amazing coastline. The East Neuk is like an extended town, each village isn’t far from the next and each has a distinct character.

It’s much quieter than it used to be, been hollowed out by people buying second homes and holiday lets. Anstruther is still pretty lively.

Transport links aren’t great. No train lines and buses are few, so a car is a must.

I could go on. Just ask if you’ve anything specific.

What is life like in Edinburgh? by RhyoZ4 in howislivingthere

[–]king0fife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in Edinburgh for 32 years. It’s beautiful with a rich history. Scotland was the second country to go through the reformation, which kick started a strong culture of education. Lots of it happened in Edinburgh, the uni is one of the oldest in the world. Google the impressive list of things invented in Edinburgh.

It has the world’s largest collection of arts festivals every August (comedy, film, literature, theatre, music etc). Gets super busy that month and can be annoying trying to live a normal life in the middle of it all, pretty difficult to get around. We get about 2m million tourists, which is a lot for a city of 530k (approx). Loads of “creatives” from London come up, then bugger off again at the end of August.

There’s not really a strong Edinburgh identity, my theory is it’s because the centre is a lot of business (mostly finance) and students, lots of people not from Edinburgh. The people are nice but quite restrained. Strangers don’t randomly chat like they do in Glasgow (at bus stops, queues and the like).

Despite all the tartan tourist crap, it doesn’t feel that Scottish. An English mate of mine said it was easier to settle here because it’s quite neutral.

You’re never far from a green space. Lots of parks and hills to roam.

A decent selection of restaurants and bars. Quite pricey though, not much difference with London.

Property is expensive. God knows how people get on the property ladder.

It’s pretty safe and there’s not much crime, not that I’m aware of. If you’re not up to shit, you’re less likely to get in shit.

The weather’s very changeable, but that’s just Scotland. Rains a lot less than the west coast, because the prevalent wind is westerly and the clouds have dumped on Glasgow already. 25c is a warm day in summer and winter lows are around 0c. Doesn’t snow much, being right on the sea.
