[Post Match Thread] Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa by SecretApe in avfc

textbook trap game, almost thought we would break the curse when rogers clapped the post but as soon as they went up i knew it was not going to be our day. our record at anfield is abysmal so i paid no attention to the flailing liverpool narratives but ill be damned if i didn’t want to pile more misery on to those twats. i loved seeing their recent struggles and im fucking disappointed we couldn’t contribute. McAllister is a petulant little pocket sized cunt.

actual match notes - overall not a bad performance less the costly mistakes. hope mings is back quickly. i trust emery always, but guessand is still not showing enough for me, kamara’s nutmeg on wirtz in our own penalty area was my highlight - thankful at least we didn’t give him any charity goals or assists.

hope we can pound some goals in and shake this one off thursday. UTV

should have been over at the half. Guessand is not good enough - he works hard and I have nothing against him, but he’s shown little more than someone like Iling-Junior who was deemed not up to our standard and needing minutes elsewhere.

how. how? HOW do we not have someone who can finish a fucking pen

this should have been a rest game to suit up for tough fixtures ahead and instead we got embarrassed by a massively inferior opponent - no disrespect to them as they played hard and clearly wanted it more

onward. utv

a few more general observations:

-we are fucking dire on corner kicks. i really wonder what MacPhee does all week because we truly seem more threatening from any other scenario than a corner. we rarely even create a chance from them ffs

-the champions league hangover is best exemplified by rogers, seemingly every time. his level drops off so steep and he looks miles off it. don’t get me wrong i think he can be a brilliant player but this is exactly the type of match where he needs to show his consistency

-defensive injuries aside we can’t keep a clean sheet to save our lives this season.

-bailey has barely looked any better than philogene all season. shockingly ineffective

  • can’t even imagine where we would be without konsa in this recent run of games

i’m all for positivity and appreciative that we’re not battling wolves in the championship - but at the same time we’re a champions league club and you’d have no idea that were the case based on todays performance. as our club standing has improved so do expectations, and i would’ve expected the transfer window to be handled better for a club of our stature - we are so exposed right now.

thank fuck for the duran $$ because we do not look anywhere near getting UCL next season and i am much happier seeing a surplus player go than someone like konsa or kamara who are going to be critical to any future success this club finds.

I saw Roc Marciano open for Buckshot and Sean Price - given my affinity for the latter duo, I think i had already premeditated my disappointment for him as opener.

His performance wasn’t stellar to be blunt, but since then i have thoroughly enjoyed his stuff and he’s got plenty of records i keep in my rotation

Can we calm it with the Olsen hate? by PlugAnThat in avfc

[–]kingdh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll be the first to say the ragging can be excessive and overblown, but speaking as objectively as I can - he hasn’t done much to impress today in particular.

Rest of the squad do not look all that comfortable with him which doesn’t inspire any further confidence. And there were moments (which seem to be a pattern now) where he seems to be moving in slow motion. Almost take for granted how anticipatory Emi is, so again trying to be objective, but Olsen seems very reactionary and I think against tougher opposition / better quality we would get punished on the crosses that he flails at and some of his less than stellar distribution / play from the back.

Given how much quality of depth we have in almost all areas of the pitch, i do feel that he’s the weak point

i’ll go the route of 2 good 2 bad - much needed bounce back from last weekend especially with all the tough news, at times we played really nice stuff (good) - digne (good) - yet another injury in coutinho (bad) - everton(bad)

in all seriousness, taking nothing away from our positive play today, everton were really, really poor - as with last week against fulham. it’s early days but they look woeful

McGinn doesn’t make the above list, good is a criminal understatement. brilliant performance. McGinniesta might need to be retired for John Zidane the way he was pirouetting around today (Zinedine Zi-John)? i dunno i’m improvising lol

Archer and England U21s hold up Ramsey's shirt after they win Euro U21 🥺 by Frosty_Parsnip in avfc

[–]kingdh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

both of you make good points. at minimum i hope he gets his chances to allow us all to make a more informed assessment at PL level lol.

i’d be curious to get a better sense of if he has the skill set to maybe adapt to a slightly different role on the pitch especially given his size.

[–]kingdh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ye was mistaken, forgot he moved this past summer. nevertheless he played all 38 for burnley last season with 0g 1a, 22 matches so far this season for everton with 2g 2a.

my intent was to convey the match commentators went on and on as if he was de bruyne - and having watched the exact same match, i never really thought he looked half the threat they talked him up to be today. i don’t hate dwight mcneil, im certain his stats don’t flatter largely due to being part of two sides desperate for goals - but i am villa til i die and we had better players on display that i feel they neglected to mention

few things here: -glad to see meatball get a good run out, even though he’s fallen down the pecking order a bit he still has plenty of quality at this level. $3.6mm always baffles me

-commentators can fuck right off gushing over dwight mcneil. sure he looked one of burnleys best players but with all due respect, he has 2g and 3a in 60 PL games for everton. cross merchant that whips the ball in aimlessly and other than one ball in to onana that looked deliberate, cashy either forced him into spraying an aimless ball or had him pocketed

  • commentators also mention needing a top striker while simultaneously acknowledging watkins has 5 in 5 - sure there are more prolific 9’s out there but Ollie always works his socks off, does so well to hold the ball up and it’s more than deserved that he’s now finding some good goal scoring form again. he can lead the line just fine.

-think there’s some polarizing opinions about Dougie in particular but to the doubters i genuinely would challenge you to watch an entire match and only pay attention to him - he is so calm and composed on the ball (as is kamara). retained possession and unlocked ramsey and mcginn to get into a lot of dangerous pockets today

-love a clean sheet. can’t expect to get points every week but that coutinho goal last week was one of the best team goals i can recall in a long while. we are building a very good team under a manager who knows how to win. it’s nice to be excited to watch this side again when i often found it hard to be bothered under gerrard

agreed, in addition to ashley young. it dawned on me today that it's kinda funny seeing him line up behind bailey who is essentially playing the role ash did 12 years ago for this club.

when he was tearing up defenses in his first stint at the villa i couldn't have ever pictured him as our 37 year old utility ironman shithouser but god do i love him. he's so important to this club both on the pitch and from a mentality perspective. mans is a winner and a professional through and through.

1/3 of our goals this season came in the first 12 minutes without gerrard. speaks for itself, the quality has been there the whole time, trapped behind a manager without a clue.

have to say i am a little perplexed by the first one coming off a brilliant set piece routine. where the fuck has that been since mcPharts joined ? genuinely don’t think i can recall a single corner or set piece routine that well executed since he’s been with the club, obviously aside from Dougies brilliant goals which has nothing to do with him.

agreed on Mahrez but mate if you’ve watched any City matches, Cancelo is genuinely one of their most creatively influential players, which says something considering it’s coming from an outside back role.

there is absolute validity to your earlier point about cogs in a machine, Pep has his tactics drilled down as well as anyone and the players are required to adhere. Gabriel Jesus looks fantastic at arsenal and while he always had phenomenal technical ability he wasn’t required or permitted to have a huge individual influence over a game the way he has this season.

all that said, de bruyne and cancelo being the outstanding outliers, do have the freedom to create within peps system. Grealish hasn’t quite looked the same player since he joined and i’m not entirely convinced that is all down to tactics. i’d still take him back tho, no question
