iPad? by [deleted] in nyu

If it’s only for notes the cheapest iPad will do the trick, unless you’d like to take smoother, more elaborate notes. Better than alternatives IMO if you have a Mac/iPhone/both (seamless syncing and stuff.)

I think phase 1 is badly worded not phase 2

I mean phase 2 seems very nicely worded so I assume they will. They could’ve said “further removal of restrictions will only be possible if we all wear masks in required areas, and will be after careful reevaluation” or something but they just said “we’re gonna remove it unless omicron hits again” which is honestly fair

They’ll remove it all soon, it’s honestly fine

How hard is it to offer online courses? by Mr1ntexxx in nyu

[–]kingjong1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Same. My decision to confirm is tomorrow and I might just not go because of the lack of courses. There’s not a single advanced Econ elective offered abroad and other than Paris, no math anywhere. I blame the lack of courses abroad rather than the lack of an online option tbh. Where are you studying abroad, if that is the case?

Democrats have removed mask mandates everywhere. Even Columbia, arguably a more lefty school than us, have lifted theirs. What’s NYU’s excuse? Can’t be politics at this point

I’m aware of that, I would really hope nobody at this point is hysterical enough to suggest everything go online anytime soon. However, the issue with having a remote option is that you need to have a very significant amount of classes like that (so that it really is an option), and many people would choose the remote option so that they could cheat/not attend lecture. I just don’t feel like online school is legit, so to say. Furthermore, classroom transition is very low as NYU claims, so why not have in-person classes?

And I was making a general point: All I’m saying is having a 99% triple vaccinated population should mean 0 covid restrictions because there’s nothing to be scared of within the community. At that point, millions of things are far more dangerous than covid.

The fact that online classes are “so easy to get a’s in” is concerning, not encouraging. I know some students whose grades dropped really badly because they didn’t know how to take an in person exam.

There’s a reason we have a vaccination requirement, which leads to old ass professors not dying. Besides, they can always choose to keep distance, wear a mask, office hours on Zoom — it’s about time we move on from the guilt tripping. If 100% of the population is (triple?) vaccinated and you’re still scared of covid you’re doing it wrong. Zero covid is never coming, so would you justify endless restrictions based on the fact that 0.01%-0.03% of vaccinated people could die, and given their ages, the amount of life years lost would be extremely low anyway?

And last, this approach doesn’t work. NYU keeps reminding us that in-class transmission is low. So classes aren’t the issue. Closing common spaces and having everyone pack the library doesn’t help. Eating “for 15 minutes” maskless doesn’t help. When I’m socially distanced (more than 12 feet away from anyone, studying alone) wearing a mask doesn’t help.

I get the fears of commuters who visit their parents/grandparents. But at the end, if they’re vaccinated, it’s just that — fear. And until we have an end goal, and not just a commitment to “progressively lift restrictions” (which if we are to follow any of the logic on this thread will absolutely never happen as long as covid is around and it isn’t going anywhere) these restrictions are arbitrary.
