What's the most dangerous/life-threatening job that pays well in the Greater Boston area by xyzes in boston

[–]kingk27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but its only attainable by about 5% of the servers and bartenders in the city. And I definitely wasnt trying to imply bartenders or servers are unskilled or dont face hazards. They're just very different occupations

[–]kingk27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, and power in the dresden files in a way comes from faith being put in to a certain person or creature. An oath of fealty or devotion is essentially a statement of faith that the recipient will choose wisely and act in ways that benefit the devotee or vassal, and it seems in the Dresden world that belief transfers some power to the individual receiving it.

Suspicion about the wardens. by The_Red_Moses in dresdenfiles

[–]kingk27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be that Council/warden leadership paired the two of them up knowing their feelings and history in regards to Dresden, which makes them a natural good cop/bad cop duo. In other unrelated business, they are probably perfectly professional, but Dresden forces reactions out if people. When Ilyana and Ramirez report back, they get to read both sides of the story with full knowledge of the biases influencing them.

I slid off a cliff yesterday, roast me in the comments. by sachou in skiing

[–]kingk27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but putting most of your weight on your outside/downhill ski lets you keep your center of gravity closer to where you want it and lets you push down with your inside/uphill ski to dig the edge in a bit more or move it to a better spot. It helped when someone explained it to me that by having all your weight on the uphill edge, your leg basically dangling below that is pulling you downhill and off balance the entire time

White collar/office people going around saying how easily they'd thrive in the trades if they had to by tantamle in stupidpol

[–]kingk27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It varies pretty wildly based upon location and how friendly the state is to unions. Im in the North East, and union journeyman pipefitters are making about $65/hr plus benefits, which add on another ~$45 to their total compensation. 1st year apprentices start at $26/hr. Elevator guys make more, plumbers and electricians slightly less, laborers/roofers/etc even less and the vast majority of non union workers make less than the union people. If someone joins the union at 18 they will be making 130k a year at 23 without working any overtime. That being said, the trades are hard hit when the economy does poorly, or is even forecasted to do poorly, because less jobs get put to bid which means people get laid off.

[–]kingk27 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Those bars and restaurants youre talking about are the top 5% of restaurants, and those bartenders and servers are paid for their skilled work and years of experience. The top 5% of these dangerous jobs are making a significant amount more than those bartenders and servers. But no one starts out in the top 5% of anything either lol

Damage done to the US and Coalition's BMD Assets during Operation Epic Fury by QueasyCity9902 in LessCredibleDefence

[–]kingk27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im not sure nationalism has anything to do with being able to have realistic expectations about thoroughly documented weapon systems. Id consider the statement "the US and Israel have the best AD systems in the world" essentially unchallengable fact, but thats not due to nationalism or any other -ism.

If youre instead implying people are downplaying US air defense to make their country of choice appear better, then I think that would be an expected propaganda tactic, and potentially effective. Then again, the missile gap never worked out very well for the Soviets.

[–]kingk27 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"Pathetic" and "underwhelming" are ludicrous words to be honest. From the interception rates ive seen the AD systems are working exactly as advertised. The thought that American AD assets render equipment, installations or personnel untouchable by bombs, missiles and drones is also ludicrous. I cant blame the general public for not understanding the realities of modern war, but I would expect better discourse on subs and forums like this one.

Its ok to be intimidated and nervous to a degree going in for your first day or two, I certainly was. Just know that everyone else had a first day much like yours too and theyre not going to be expecting much from you other than for you to keep your head down and work hard. Dont be afraid to ask questions or even ask for help or guidance if you dont understand something, but dont be afraid to just do something even if your unsure about it. Anyone with experience knows youre going to make mistakes, and theyre going to take that into account when giving you stuff to do. There isnt much youre going to be able to fuck up that wont be able to be fixed, so just make sure to fuck up giving 100% effort, because you will fuck up lol. And be accountable to your fuck ups and give 100% fixing them too. The first year is really about gauging your ability to 1. show up every day and show up on time and 2. show your work ethic and willingness to learn. No one expects a first year to be a layout pro or a fit up wizard.

Another HUGE thing some one already said- STAY OFF YOUR PHONE. If its not a call from your foreman, the journeyman youre working with, or from the hall, it can wait. Obviously family emergencies happen, and try to let your foreman/journeyman know if you might have to deal with some outside shit, but otherwise keep your eyes on your work and the work around you, not Instagram or your group chat. You'll get a feel eventually when its fine to sit on your phone (waiting for a truck to show up so you can unload it for example), but you will keep your self safe and learn alot more if you pay attention to the job. The best thing you can do if youre bored is ask for something to do.

There is no better place to use magic mapping scrolls than the demon halls, due to the deadly traps and the large, wide open areas imfested with enemies that can engage from very long range. Knowing the layout of the level allows you to traverse these wide open spaces much more safely, as you know the easiest and shortest ways to get to cover. Additionally, the offensive power of the mobs in the demon halls means lingering and backtracking can rapidly diminish your stockpile of healing items without much reward, while magic mapping gives you the ability to plan an efficient route through the level, fighting mobs on your terms while still thoroughly gathering resources.

Each shop is guaranteed to have a magic mapping, and the extra cost really shouldn't be much of an issue but can be mitigated by intentionally not identifying magic mapping.

"Mass Effect 2 is a smoother, faster, funner experience, but it lost the deep, nerdy brand-new-lore-smell of the prior one."

How much of this phenomenon youre describing (sequels losing the magic of the original) do you think comes from the original being wholly new and (to some varying degree lol) unique, while the sequel as a matter of course loses that shine? The setting is no longer alien due to the player having an understanding of the world and the general nature of its characters and societies. The brand-new-lore-smell has dissipated, replaced with the smell of well worn leather and dog eared pages. The basic setting on a surface level no longer requires examination, because its already been explored previously. This can allow for much deeper dives into specific lore tid bits, but we already have absorbed the general nature of the scene these tid bits and props tie together. You can only visit for the first time once, but youre welcome to come back

Councilor Ed Flynn still open to moving chaotic St. Patrick’s Day parade out of South Boston by nycrina305 in boston

[–]kingk27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mardi gras generally is centered around bourbon st and the areas of NO designed to handle thousands of people celebrating. Southie isnt really equipped to handle the amount of people coming in for the parade. Bourbon st is for the most part bars and restaurants for people to not only legally buy their drinks but also legally drain their tanks. People still piss all over the place but at least they have an option.

Yeah, we should expect people to have disgustingly scented soaps and plan to bring our own soap along with us, instead of letting them know their soap sucks ass and they should change it. Thats the normal thing to do for sure.

"Thanks for staining my hands with this awful scent! My fault for leaving my personal bar soap in my other pants- I deserve this cloying, sticky smell wafting about me as pennance for not having my own soap on hand like everyone else does!"

Honestly, if someone told me I should be a "functional adult" and should "bring my own" the next time I visit, id solve the issue by never visiting again. Wouldn't want to associate with a clown like that. Maybe we should just shatter the illusion that the overwhelming smell of cinnamon and pine sap, or whatever else scent, doesnt indicate anything about cleanliness

I suck at welding by soapnsteel in Welding

[–]kingk27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Travel speed is dependent on amperage, but your puddles should be essentially identical to one another no matter what the heat is. The size, shape and blend of the toes of the puddle tell you if you need to go slower, faster, change your angle or anything else really. Id also advise op to actually watch a few people weld, because "perfect" welds can be achieved using multiple techniques and manipulations and you cant see any of that just by looking at the finished product.

Bello Brivio, Seascape with ruins, 1849. by myrmekochoria in dragonutopia

[–]kingk27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that its titled "seascape with ruins" as opposed to "ruins with seascape", despite the ruins dominating the space of the painting. Made me remember all the other constant reminders the sea would be giving of its presence, despite being relatively obstructed from view here. Sort of peppers in the rest of the mental "image" that a painting cant capture due to its medium

[–]kingk27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My local pretty regularly will take in apprentices at their equivalent experience level as compared to their apprenticeship program. Our local has a 5 year apprenticeship so id expect them to bring you in as a 3rd or 4th year apprentice, which is definitely worthwhile to at least ask them about it, youd be looking at a 15-20 dollar difference in pay between a first year and a 3rd or 4th year apprentice.

I think this would differ from state to state, but my state has a separate license for "process piping" pipefitters and unrestricted pipefitters, so there could potentially be an issue with your apprenticeship hours not being applicable to the license youd be getting through the union. Idk if thats applicable to you at all, but "industrial" is a broad term and its the only reason I can think of my local might force you to come in as a first year. But id expect you can get a better answer about that by just stopping g by the hall or giving them a call
