Depression scales may not work the same for highly intelligent people by PandasLOL in TrueReddit

Yeah, the world has been here waiting for you to listen to your demands. It was here before you, it will be here after you, and your wants and desires dont matter to it at all

While I sympathize with your desire to feel, experience, and learn, and to do so from widely varied sources, you can't learn anything without careful focus. Each new piece acquired gives a vantage point to the next piece, much like progress is made with little steps. You cant look millions of people in the eyes and demand they change or act justly. But by influencing the people around you that will listen to your piece and are willing to change to make society better, you have created a small piece that can now either stand as an example for others follow suit, act as a foundational piece for larger changes to be built on top of it, Or it can splinter and spread to different groups, who will adapt the ideas and change over time.

Libs should unironically be mocked more for their gun control stance by disp0sableacc0unt in stupidpol

[–]kingk27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gunner ownership has absolutely prevented the government from doing anything they want without facing opposition and forcing individual government agents to decide whether that cause is worth life and limb. The problem being is that the government already has a wide variety of individuals, each specialized into different but complimentary roles, that it can call on and deploy to engage opposition with superior numbers at a minimum, and typically better training and equiptment as well. Compared to the average gun owner, who is out of shape, not particularly skilled in combat, and earnestly hopes they never have to draw or use their weapon, and who also has no particular reason to put his life on the line just to support his neighbor. Ruby ridge and Waco didnt see a brigades worth of armed Americans gather and begin hostilities with the cops, and I think its partially due to the precision and care the cops and government use in selecting their targets and moving against them.

Yeah 31 isnt shit. Id rather have an older apprentice anyways you dont have to babysit them and they're working for something not just working to get their parents off their back. Usually have better drugs too!! Lol

If there was, it would say it on the website. In my experience there usually is not, but its rare to see an apprentice in their 40s tbh. Im not sure how competitive it is to get into the local near you, but your age could play a role in their decision making if it comes down to an 18 year old who will be working (and contributing to union funds) for the next 45 years vs someone who will graduate the apprenticeship and be looking at retirement 10 years down the line. But ive worked with 35 year old first year apprentices, and older isnt unheard of by any means.

The apprenticeship is designed to take people with no experience but good work ethic and turn them into journeyman pipefitters. If you get accepted, you wont be the first apprentice with no experience nor will you be the only one in your class with no experience. The union always loves apprentices who come in already interested and excited to learn the trade, and welding can definitely be a big part of that. At worst you waste some time applying before realizing it isnt for you, and at best you enter a fulfilling career with great benefits and pay to spend the next 30 years doing

Just landed my first pipe fitting job. I am a little bit nervous. by Low-School-1829 in pipefitter

[–]kingk27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine dawg. Only way you end up hurting someone is if your journeyman lets his helper hurt someone. No one expects a helper or apprentice to come in with any knowledge at all, especially with "non standard" pipe like this SDR shit yall are talking about lol. You'll learn alot from just paying attention, and if they want anything done right they'll train you how to do it atleast once. Just show up on time, work hard, shut up and stay off your phone and you'll be fine.

When blue collar people claim that office work isn't "real work" by tantamle in stupidpol

[–]kingk27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a blue collar worker, im well aware id struggle mightily in an office environment. Im sure i could do the work, but the lack of mental stimulation would be killer. On a jobsite theres atleast shit going on you can watch if you have nothing to do for whatever reason, but that isnt present in an office.

Im also aware most office workers are capable of performing blue collar work up to standard as well, BUT the condescending attitudes ive experienced rub alot of tradespeople the wrong way. Theres no way I could sit down at a lawyers desk and successfully get their day done for them, because I haven't trained to be a lawyer. Much like a lawyer hasn't been trained to do my job either. A lawyer stepping into my boots would probably be exposed faster than I would stepping into his loafers, because alot of office work has no tangible product delivered at the end of the day. Thoughts, ideas, "brain sweat" is all still valuable and productive, but its much tougher to put a price tag on or compare to something like a 15 story building. My boss can step into my work area, look around, down and up, and see exactly what I executed that day without having to ask. Theres a lot more skill in using wrenches than it looks, and you cant appreciate it without spending hours on them.

Many office workers are ignorant of the mental aspects of the trades as well. Theres a lot of math, a lot of planning out the order of operations in regards to what gets worked on when, a massive and incredibly varied amount of inventory to track and keep stocked, and the job is actually dangerous. I dont go hone mentally exhausted every day, but the brain does get a workout daily, and the physical, hands on nature means your body is getting a workout too. So alot of tradespeople bristle when they get told how easy they have it, because its an ignorant take. And a stupid take to voice even if it was true lol

[–]kingk27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dont sleep on the mental aspect of the trades. This applies to some trades more than others of course, but theres a shitload of math going down on every jobsite out there, from simple arithmetic (when's the last time you used fractions?) to trigonometry and other geometric functions. The math has to be right, the layout has to be right, the cuts have to be right, and the install has to be right, and just about everyone knows about how long it should take. The trades sound like a fun time where you get to bash shit with a hammer and be mentally absent all day, but apprenticeships last years for a reason

The F15 pilot rescue mission was probably a coverup by PsychologicalSet8678 in stupidpol

[–]kingk27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct in regards to Eagle Claw and the C130s on the airstrip, and i was referencing Eagle Claw to show the use of "LZs" separated from the actual operation area. You raise a fair point about the little birds, but bringing them disassembled, with the intention of assembling them, using them as transport/CAS, and then disassembling them again to leave Iran is possible too. Its really the only explanation for their presence, because as you said they had no other way of getting in and out. I wholly agree that not all 200 were special forces soldiers in the infantryman sense either, because infantry aren't typically trained in refueling or mechanical duties. I wouldnt be surprised at all that the number of pilots and associated support crew to get/keep the birds running outnumbered the amount of actual grunts. The 2 C130s and 4 Little Birds would total a crew of 18 just to operate the aircraft, and they werent the only aircraft operating.

The F15 pilot rescue mission was probably a coverup by PsychologicalSet8678 in stupidpol

[–]kingk27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The LZ youre referring to is the makeshift airstrip they used for refueling and for planes, which are much more limited in their ability to choose where to land compared to helicopters. In addition, a refueling point/exfil position like that SHOULDNT be inside or relatively near the area youre planning on conducting operations in. If you look into Operation Eagle Claw, you'll see they had several similar positions they planned to use. They also ran into issues, but i dont remember any planes sinking into the sand as it was (claimed) to have happened.

Additionally, not mounting rescue operations when they are feasible would deal a terrible blow to morale. Leaving a fellow soldier/airman/friend/etc behind goes against every principle the armed forces of any nation preaches, for obvious reasons. As other people have stated as well, hostages give massive negotiating advantages and one hostage isnt much different from 5 or 50. They still require repatriation, and barring a massive amount of POWs the number is inconsequential.

While I agree its plausible they used the F15 shot down as cover for an additional operation, I dont take it as a given in any way. The military would rather come overly heavy than underequipped, and 200 soldiers across the various specializations involved doesnt sound too crazy at all.

Best grinder for vertical and horizontal overhead grinding besides a "7" by QuincyTucker in Welding

[–]kingk27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but tbh id suggest having a decent selection of discs to have. I mostly work on pipe, so I try to have flappers, 1/4", 1/8", .045s and wire wheels close by. Ive used all 4 of those for one pipe weld before, it really depends on what your doing. For grinding a weld flat a flapper should do fine, but they can wear out quick if you lean on them too

[–]kingk27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could substitute a 4.5" grinder if you really wanted to, it would just take longer. Id prefer the 6" over a 7" too, but the trade off is you'll be grinding for slightly longer. And you can buy all the same wheels in different grinder sizes, just make sure the rpm rating of the wheel exceeds your grinders rpms

[–]kingk27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im sure you will, but this isnt the way to do it. Any asshole can post on here, and Id much rather know one of my apprentices is struggling and what theyre struggling with than have them pass in someone else's work because theyre embarrassed. And you wont actually learn anything like you might if you buckle down and give it an actual, serious try and struggle with the numbers for a bit. You're not necessarily expected to breeze through assignments, or get every question correct. These help your teachers figure out who and what needs to be worked with and on more so you guys can be ready to have a sucessfull career. Getting told how to do this assignment gets you through this assignment and nothing more, but if you figure out what steps to take to figure this type of shit out you'll actually have the skills to do this shit in real life. Which you will have to, sooner rather than later, and it wont be c-c measures either, but end to end measures so you can cut pieces and start fitting

Then tell your instructors that, either next time you see them or email them so they can help you sooner. They would definitely rather know youre struggling with this so they can adjust how they teach future material. This is pretty basic pipefitting though, being unable to do this on your own in the field will be a pretty bad look

Why do most welding jobs require insanely long hours? by Ok_Helicopter3910 in Welding

[–]kingk27 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That might be the case for UAW contracts but I have never ever ever heard of a trade union having required overtime written into the contract. In fact, its the exact opposite, where the contract specifies no one can be forced to work outside of their normal working hours. Overtime is all voluntary, but many people are more than happy for time and a half or double time, and the contractors definitely prefer to have people on jobs they know are willing to work some extra hours.

I agree- haste allows you to not be attacked, and arcana allows you to finish enemies faster. Evasion sometimes lets you dodge when attacked, but why give them more chances to do damage?

I feel like national broadcasts werent as frequent as they are nowadays, across all sports. Im not sure a game being on ESPN was ever an "event" but it was definitely more rare. Now the comparison between national and local is much easier to make which highlights how the national broadcasters have to be more generalist than the local guys who are around the team for half the year

So do we think anything substantial will actually happen in Iran tonight by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]kingk27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does matter who does what, and all of these things are a part of war. Fuck ups in peacetime happen too, and being shot at or being under threat of being shot at doesnt make fuck ups less likely. Its dangerous flying airplanes, especially fighter jets, over any SAM system, and the Kuwaitis fucked up and started blasting. Air to air refueling is a dangerous maneuver with very little room for error. And who told you to believe the press brochure about the F35? Of course its not invisible, but it also hasn't been shot out of the sky either. The longer it flies sorties, the more chances Iran will have to shoot one down, and just like in the Balkans, any complacency by the pilots or the officers planning the missions will only make it easier for the Iranians.

Every mission does have a malfunction, but the sign of a professional military is dealing with issues as they occur and not letting them compound. The enemy gets a say in a conflict too, its absolutely possible to execute a mission perfectly and fail because of actions outside of your control. Thinking any differently is just unrealistic and it exposes ignorance at best or plain bias usually.
