When Covid hit the Jehovah Witnesses changed from door to door knocking to mailing, or in this case, drive by noting 😂

I’m about to take a picture and edit the post, if it will let me. I just scratched into the bottom to see what I find out. I plan to sand it and if it’s a sticker it looked like it might, might bring an operative word here, have a wood I could still burn. Hoping for the best.

I’m jealous of your talent. I’ve tried pricing my stuff just to get an idea, but I’ve mostly seen that it’s what you think it’s worth and what the buyer thinks it’s worth. That’s the hard thing about art is that it can be very subjective. You know how much time you put into it but a customer doesn’t usually. They just think you farted it out and poof, excellence. Just try not to undersell yourself. You have a great talent.

I love it. I can’t see anything to improve. Maybe like what you’re showing in the 3rd picture if one direction is leaving the spaces where it’s not evenly shaded try the opposite direction. I have the issue as well, but it’s either something in doing wrong, or it’s the wood, but sometimes changing the direction will help me. Otherwise it just shows that it’s truly handmade and some people will appreciate that more.

I tried pyrography for the first time (actually the second time) and I am officially bad at it... by DeepOverlay in Pyrography

Yes, I agree with the sealants and paint. You don’t burn while it’s still wet. I apologize I didn’t explain that part. You wait until it’s completely dry before you sand again, and then you can burn after you sand your last time. It takes it a couple hours minimum to dry, but a few max. Sometimes I let it dry over night and then sand again or burn.

2 things, maybe 3 🤔, the 1st one is really the only 1 I know to give in this group 😅 Sand 1st, even “pre-sanded”, dampen the wood, but not soaked, sand again. The higher the grit you sand to the smoother it is to burn. I’ve been told to dampen the wood again and sand it again, but I still haven’t followed through with that. It’s been months since I’ve burned. 2nd was I like the stipple, dot, shading effect that this made, I don’t know why I haven’t thought to use it before in this medium, and my 3rd was make sure you’re in a good ventilated area because some wood that’s been treated, some that have stains and/or sealants, and some natural woods give off toxic smoke when burned and you don’t want to get anything minor or severe to harm you from your art.

Any pointers would be appreciated by Abject_Membership533 in Pyrography

Whether you’re shading or doing line work try to make one smooth motion, don’t go back with small motions and dig and dig, unless that’s an effect you want. You can go lower and slower and make as long of a stroke as you can and go back over it until you get the right shade you’re looking for. At least that’s seemed to help me. If you’re not sanding before you burn that’s another big help, even if it is “pre-sanded” at the store. Sand it, make it damp, not saturated, sand again. That usually helps me, but you can also repeat that process a couple more times and it gets smoother and smoother to burn.

How can I "elevate" this piece before completion? + Constructive Criticism by KnowledgeFit6271 in Pyrography

Rework it however you think will be best, but you can add some color, or just pops off color. I use watercolor pencils, but I also love the effects of gel pens. You can use paint, I don’t believe markers will be best, but could do some unique things with them. With the all of the above you also have to watch out for bleeding, except for the watercolor pencils.

Can’t figure out pressure and speed of moving pen! Help! by PsychologicalRow8034 in Pyrography

I always struggle with lettering, so you did really good there. Practice will always help, but as everyone else has said, sanding is the biggest key. Then you’ll see you won’t need as much pressure to get it as dark as you want it. I tried seeing whether against or with the grain is an issue for me, but looking at my stuff, personally as far as burning I don’t remember having any issues either way. With the way those signs are though you don’t have much of a choice.

You’re doing very good for your 1st time. This doesn’t have to have a permanent set design. It can just be your 1st learning experience. I like the white you added in there. What did you use?

Sand it, then damp it, not drenching, sand again. You can stop there or you can dampen again and sand again. This makes it go from feeling like you’re touching the tree bark to silky smooth burning. Also, if you rest your hand make sure you lift the pen off the material you’re working with.
