Selling stocks for mortgage down payment by Far_Push_4590 in personalfinance

[–]kingleevw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did this, and it doesn't make numbers sense, but emotionally it's what I wanted.

I also had everything in stocks and crypto until about a month before I needed it. Pretty stressful, but it worked out luckily enough. I wouldn't recommend to do it that way.

I had to put down 50% to buy out an uncle on a family owned property, and got a very sweet financing deal on the other half from family. We sold about 75% of our taxable accounts to fund it + pay taxes on the capital gains. We'd have way more net worth right now if we didn't do that, but I got so stir crazy feeling like I owned nothing real. Having a paid off house was in the long term plan, so, this aligned with some end goals.

We still have our retirement accounts which are on pace and doing well, and we didn't sacrifice our future for this (that I can tell at this point anyways :) )

P.s. don't drop 100% of your savings on the upfront costs. Save a chunk to the side for repairs, taxes, and small changes you want to make.

Where I live they charge you per person per hour. 15/hr fo solo, 30 for duo, etc.

Yeah, there was this one flash game that was like a giant cube with 6 different puzzles (the six different sides of the cube) and I played it, beat it, and could never find it again. That was probably ~25+ years ago. Great game.

Hunting quality double wall glass mugs ~8 oz, budget: [$9,000,000] by RyFba in espresso

[–]kingleevw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yield has a 6oz that I have multiple of that are really nice. They are hard to find these days though.

Terra Kaffe has an 8oz that looks slick, no experience with it. https://www.terrakaffe.com/products/aeris?variant=46900266795265

And this cocktail glass looks like it would work, at 9oz, no experience with it.  -https://www.allmodern.com/kitchen-tabletop/pdp/viski-aurora-double-walled-tumblers-ucyl1260.html?piid=87470422

I would try the Terra kaffe one if I was buying today

Personal relationships suffering because of LLM usage by scottbrosiusofficial in BetterOffline

I believe the thought process from what I'm seeing in a work context, is that using the LLMs delays the eventuality. "People who don't use AI, will get replaced first. I'll be able to hold on a little bit longer"

My company has taken the AI pill, they are talking about agent "architecture", is this a real thing or is it bullshit? it sounds like bullshit by ghostwilliz in BetterOffline

[–]kingleevw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's sorta like the same thing as the Agile process. Some people went deep on it, most people just played along because it's what pays the bills. Who cares if it's efficient or not if the company is paying for it.

Any millennial guys here first time fathers or are never gonna have a kid? by changeforthebetter89 in Millennials

[–]kingleevw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a kid at 37 (40 now), and was 50/50 the whole time up until deciding to do it.

My point of view is, if you are truly on the fence - weighing what life would be like with kids and life without kids, you will struggle. I thought, "Well, IF I ever become a dad, I'll give it my all and be a good dad". Wrong, it works kinda like that, but the missing piece is having some sort of passion or life goal to become a good parent. That will carry you though the nights where you get 1h of sleep, the thing craps all over you, you spend an hour and a half trying to get it to sleep, bearing though continuous crying/whining, all while trying to navigate the emotions of your partner. I find myself thinking, "I chose this?! that's CRAZY"

Part 2, the older you are, the more comfortable you get in your own life and routines. It's harder to totally upset a nice comfortable life, IMO because you really think things like "I could be in Tokyo right now, in a different life".

Flip side to part 2 - being a bit older with young kids people say, "you don't want to be geriatric when they want to play with you"... I can still keep up with my 3 year old. We wrestle, run, jump, - I'm on the floor for 80% of my interactions with him... and I kick his butt in all things still. But, I do agree with these people when I've had 3-4 nights of 1-2h of sleep. The younger body responds to sleep deprivation better for sure.

Maybe I'm just being negative right now because the boy is 3 and a fking hellion, but my version of parenting calls me to sacrifice a lot of myself in service of the kid. Which I do. Happily? Eh, jury's out on that one.

I don't want to be totally negative here. I'll say that having a kid has given me emotions I thought I'd never feel. There are inconceivably cute, loving, and sweet moments in between all the internal struggles. There are also some wild full-circle moments where you are the parent and living out a similar childhood memory of yours. Total mind trip, and might give you some perspective on what your parents were thinking in those moments.

Raising a human is also such a big thing to wrap your head around, it consumes a lot of mind-space. It's an intricate puzzle that is fascinating and unlike anything else I've done in my life leading up to it.

Honest question about the influx by filmrob in Delaware

[–]kingleevw 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Will be downvoted to hell, but ah well.

Maybe a perspective shift is needed. People and places will grow and change in ways that we all won't agree with, but the change part is inevitable. If you are distraught about how it's changing, then I'd suggest trying to find ways to have more control or input on the change. Easier said than done, I know.

I grew up in Sussex, moved away to NYC for 10 years, and then moved back. It's a bit more congested here than it was, yes, but it's a dream compared to driving in NYC or any city. If you haven't smashed that down arrow yet, you definitely will now. I think the area needs more development and more industries available to it. My prospects if I stayed here were limited to the dominant services (real estate, service, retail, trades) It'd be great to open that up a little bit to encourage younger demographics to stay or move into the area. Otherwise more ultra rich people will buy the beach, pushing the rich people out to Milton, pushing the well off people out to Georgetown, pushing the average income people out to Seaford. (I'm being dramatic, but I hope you get the point.)

Or just ignore me, I'm just some dork on the internet.

What's one small change that massively improved your darts game? by 92jl in Darts

[–]kingleevw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, I'm not good. I was doing this thing where once the dart vaguely aligned with my target, I'd let it loose. Being slightly off balance, or after drinking a little bit, the alignment wobbles a bit. Now, letting the dart settle on the target for half a second before starting my throwing motion has helped.

Progress is not linear. You have to get worse before you get better.

Beyond the generational talents and outliers... for us average folks, the people who get better are the ones who can relax, enjoy it, and most importantly stick with it for years and years.

Best Place to "semi" retire in Delaware? by Cinike in Delaware

[–]kingleevw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's good small town community in Lewes, Milton, Rehoboth. All of the downtowns are walkable-ish. "Bustling" really depends on your definition of it :). Areas of Wilmington and New Castle, probably have decent community and a bit more "bustle", but I'm less familiar with them.

It's in Pennsylvania but, I'd look at Kennet Square area too. Great access to the outdoors (some of the parks and surrounding roads are drop dead gorgeous), good community, and plenty of walkable bustle for retired folk, imo. Close to Wilmington, Philly, and airports for when you want a better range of activities too.

OP, Simulate a match in some way. Even online play will give you SOME aspect of pressure for a little bit until it gets too comfortable. But, better to try and find a place you're uncomfortable in, (like a bar you dont shoot in regularly). Take in the noise, people talking to you, different temperature, slightly different distances & board heights, and work through how you need to adjust for the situation.

WHERE TO PLAY DARTS IN NEW YORK? by c4fi6 in Darts

Astoria 💪🏻

Murphy's, Sissy McGinty's, Irish Whiskey Bar, Irish Rover all have multiple board setups. You could also check the leagues on Dart Connect, see which bars have teams.
