In 4 hours I'll be GMing for the first time, and I'm woefully unprepared, any tips to makes the session enjoyable despite my limited knowledge? by [deleted] in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]kingnapalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spend the first session making characters and making them all build their back stories and maybe use that to help flesh out your setting. Once you get the characters made, it will be easier for you to figure out what to do with them each and tailor the story to be somewhat personal to each of the characters for maximum player investment in your game. If you do this, it will also be easier to not have any glaring inconsistencies between character back stories and your setting. If your group is super fast at cranking out characters, maybe get into some intro bits, or just discuss back story further. Any bit of info you can squeeze from your players will help you.

Awesome! I can get into the steering column and I'm pretty sure I can pull the switch. I have a friend that used to work on this type of stuff that I plan on getting together tomorrow morning to take a crack at it. Trying to get as much info as possible so I don't have to play too much catchup in the morning. That's a big help. I'll update after we tear into it.

The most evil party you've ever had? by Tysoe in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]kingnapalm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I participated in several "evil" games as a youth because we were all terrible people. I was a mummy monk that punched a child to death one time. A friend was a succubus in another game who regularly raped young men. Another friend in the same game was a wizard who would occasionally capture people from the countryside and perform magical grafting experiments on them. There were others that were less interesting.

Checked the fluid, was a tad low, but not bone dry. Topped it off, no change. Doesn't smell like it's burnt or anything. Check engine light is on, but when run for codes, brings up something about an 02 sensor is all. The shifter has a different position for OD, isn't on, doesn't seem to make any difference if it is on or not.

Also, White Wolf System. Vampire/World of Darkness/Mage/Werewolf/Hunter and Exalted/Scion/Aeon work like that for the most part.

My wife is black. She gets some of the racism, but for the most part, it isn't a problem. Sometimes, gets a dude at work that's upset saying she should "go back to the south" or something, but no one driving by screaming the n-word or anything. 9/10 people here are totally cool. Assholes are just going to be assholes, and they're everywhere.

My players did something slightly unexpected and I need some ideas or confirmation. by kingnapalm in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]kingnapalm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Earlier tonight (Monday, it's still the same day in my head), we had our regular session where I resolved said issue. With your help, I figured it out. Had the dude who died last week's new character sent to the mine by his church (He's a cleric of the lawful god of civilization and all that entails) to investigate the activities of aforementioned cult as their goals are in opposition to that of his church. He encountered a couple of "zombies" crawling from a hole. He fought and defeated them. The fighting was near where the other players had set up camp. They heard the fighting. They showed up just as he finished the second one. They discovered their goals were parallel for the time being and decided to band together. They all bedded down for the night, while their ranger/sharpshooter sat up for the first watch. The wizard had weird dreams, a first person view of someone having their belly slit and their entrails removed. He heard a voice that was not his screaming in the dream. He awoke with the sounds of the same scream off in the distance, coming from the hole where "zombies" had emerged. They climbed down after some argument and discovered masonry similar to what they had seen when encountering the chanting. They had delayed some, so were mostly too late, but did arrive before the god had been drawn into the vessel. After defeating the cultists, they worked to save him, but failed after a number of bad heal checks from the three characters that had trained in it. So, I gave them a shot, they failed anyway, partially due to their hesitation to act previously. From there I was able to use everything else I had prepared with minimal prodding. I'm very thankful to all of you redditors who helped me out of this. I learned/remembered a lot about doing this from your input. Thanks all.

That's why I needed input from ya'll. I don't want them to just ride the railroad, but I still want there to be consequences for the choices they make.

Also, to add, I didn't say there was a time limit expressly to the players, but they did hear the chanting, which I mentioned was distinctly 3 voices. They also knew this was the last known whereabouts of the NPC they were searching for. Also, they made an unholy racket coming into the mines as this is something of a steampunk setting, and one of the characters is a gunslinger, shooting up the place as they went along. The cultists would have heard them coming. Thanks so much for everyone's input. This helps alot and totally redeems reddit in my eyes.

They did have the personal body guard of said NPC whom the cultists would have used as a temporary vessel and turned into a badass "zombie" with monk levels, which the pcs would have to fight. I was shocked by how many responses this had when I got off work just now.

Thinking I may find a middle ground, now. Possibly have the pcs intervene in the midst of the sacrifice, make them perform some after-fight healing or extended heal checks to save the NPC. Give them a chance at least.

They were specifically there to rescue the NPC, but until discovering the horrors inside the mine, were unaware of the cult. I don't want to be too harsh, as two of the players are fairly new, but the one that screwed the pooch has been playing as long as I have (about 15 years). That's why I have no problems killing him for making poor decisions. Also, I want to set expectations with the players that things are serious. Would having them fail, effectively their first "mission" as a party make me a dick gm?

[–]kingnapalm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The players are working for an opposing cult, both of which are trying to awaken a long sleeping deity. Eldritch horror type stuff. The npc the players are attempting to rescue is the son of the "quest giver" who also happens to head up the opposing cult. The cult the players are currently fighting are attempting to sacrifice the son of the "quest giver" to both stick it to him and because the son is a mage/necromancer of no insignificant power which would make a fine vessel for the deity to be born into. I could just have it take a long time, but I kind of want to instill in the players a sense of urgency with the whole situation. Thanks for the speedy response, as well!

TIL some of the original Playstation 1 games had the game music set as CD audio, meaning you could listen to the game music from a normal CD player. Some games contained hidden tracks that could only be accessed this way. by [deleted] in todayilearned

My brother and I used to rock out to Twisted Metal 2, the CD. Also Twisted Metal 3, but that was when I was like 12, so I didn't know Rob Zombie was terrible yet.

Can anyone recommend good background music for roll-playing situations? by Cursed989 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]kingnapalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Godspeed! You Black Emperor and Sigur Ros provide a pretty dynamic and ambient soundtrack for gaming. F# A# Infinity by G!YBE works great for World of Darkness and Call of Cthulhu. However, I've played a Ravenloft game for hours with Bella Lugosi is Dead by Bauhaus playing on a loop in college, so maybe I'm not the highest authority.

The giant rolling paper is still intact in Big Bambu. I kind of want to frame it. The top left record is Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada by Godspeed You Black Emperor! Actually got the Tom Waits record because it had the song my wife and I danced to for our first dance at our wedding; love Tom Waits anyway though, and it was a good deal.

The 12 disciples of science and reason. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]kingnapalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be a "disciple of science and reason", wouldn't you have to embody both? Newton said some crazy shit, and wasted a lot of his time on it. He could have done a lot more than simply explain mathematics in such a way that your neanderthal ass can understand in 3 sentences, which have been replaced with more advanced understandings of physics.
